Well balanced tour with emphasis on eco-tourism with natural scenery, wildlife and physical activities especially walking in the national parks. Excellent driver guide who was knowledgeable about a range of topics and had a friendly, helpful rapport with the group which spanned over 5 decades in age range. The tour offered different accommodation choices and some optional activities at extra cost.....therefore allowed for individualized budget choices.

Debora, our well travelled, Italian born tour guide, did a great job of making all ages (20-72) and nationalities part of one happy group. We all had a great time! Deb certainly knew her stuff and passed on a lot interesting info. The success of any tour relies heavily on the competence of the tour guide. We were lucky to have Debora. As far as itinerary goes, the Red Centre doesn't disappoint. The scenery is dramatic and so different. King's Canyon and Uluru are at the top of my "like" list. They are just beautiful. The day's starts were very early but gave us more time to enjoy the journey rather than feeling rushed. The King's Canyon camp was the best - isolated, peaceful, starry nights and the best location to try sleeping in a swag. This trip (PAY4CY) was not the basic backpacker cheapie, meaning that a host was already at camp with meals prepared ready for our arrival. Special thanks to Angela, our host at KC camp. She was just lovely. Everything done with a smile and lovely food. Intrepid will miss her. On Day 4 Debora gave us the opportunity to choose between the 24km Palm Valley detour, as per the itinerary (2 bumpy 4wd hours each way), or a series of detours to Redbank Gorge, Ormiston Gorge, Ochre Pits and Simpson's Gap. We all voted for the latter and really enjoyed a relaxed, easy day. Some even swam. Good suggestion Deb! Yes, I'd choose Intrepid again. One of our group had done 4 previous trips with them and been happy with all. I'm now looking at Intrepid's S.American options.

This was our first time on a round trip with a guide. The 10-day trip through Tasmania was perfect for us to get to know the country. As Germans, we were very impressed with the English language of the guide Keygan, as we were able to understand almost all the explanations very well. Keygan told us many stories and background information about Tasmania and its colonial history with a lot of humour. The mixed travelling group of about 27-75 years with participants from U.S., AUS, England, New Zealand, Switzerland, and Germany was well looked after by Keygan as a herding dog. I can only recommend it. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

For exploring Australia's wild places with real insight, Intrepid Travel has built up a solid reputation - their Tasmania hiking guides actually live and breathe the local trails, and they've got proper gear that holds up in all conditions. The food's genuinely excellent too; their camp cooks work magic with local ingredients even in remote spots. If you're keen to meet fellow travelers while seeing the west coast, Nullarbor Traveller has really nailed the social side of group tours. Their Esperance and Margaret River trips create this nice mix where you're exploring pristine beaches, tasting wines and naturally forming friendships that stick. Our travelers often tell us they stay in touch long after the tour ends. Autopia Tours runs a practical Perth to Exmouth route that gives you good value without cutting corners. Their guides know exactly where to spot whale sharks, when to hit the national parks, and they share interesting stories about Aboriginal culture along the way. For first-time visitors looking to dive into Sydney's social scene and coastal highlights, Intro Travel's Oz Intro works well. They help sort out practical stuff like bank accounts and phone plans, then connect you with other solo travelers for nights out in Sydney and adventures up the East Coast. The orientation week gets you settled before heading north to explore beaches, forests and reef spots with your new travel mates.
Best places to start your Australia tour
Sydney comes in first for Australian tour departures with 21 regular options, while Melbourne follows with 14 and Adelaide handles 11 departures. Brisbane and also Perth round out the main starting points with 9 and 8 departures throughout the year. Looking at how our customers book, we suggest locking in your dates about 4.5 months ahead (129 days) to get the best picks, especially during busy seasons. Our travelers find Sydney tours work really well between March and May when you can enjoy outdoor sites without the heat, while Melbourne really comes alive during October and November when gardens put on their spring show. For good deals and plenty of choice, think about traveling in April-May or September-October - you'll see fewer tourists but still get that perfect Australian weather.

Best time to visit Australia
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter brings out the best of Australia's natural encounters, especially along the western coast. Our travelers particularly enjoy the small-group journeys from Perth to Exmouth where you can swim with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef and meet friendly dolphins at Monkey Mia. The guides really know their spots - they'll take you to pull up lobster pots near Kalbarri and show you the mysterious Pinnacles formations rising from the desert. Many customers tell us how much they love camping under clear winter skies, followed by morning walks through gorges and pink lakes. Your guide will introduce you to Aboriginal culture through bush tucker tastings and traditional music, while keeping things flexible enough to chase the best wildlife sightings each day.

- Spring 2026
Spring tours really shine in the southeast, where mild temperatures create perfect conditions for combining city exploration with nature experiences. Our Sydney-based adventures start with harbor walks and surf lessons at Bondi before heading north to Byron Bay. You'll learn to catch waves with local instructors who make everyone feel comfortable, whether you're a complete beginner or looking to improve your skills. Meanwhile, Melbourne departures take advantage of spring blooms in the Royal Botanic Gardens and perfect weather for driving the Great Ocean Road. What makes these tours special is how they blend urban discoveries with coastal adventures - one day you're exploring hidden laneways and the next you're watching for dolphins from coastal headlands.

- Summer 2026
Summer brings out the tropical splendor of Queensland's coast, and our most popular tours make the most of it. The Brisbane to Cairns route lets you experience the Whitsundays at their finest - you'll cruise to secluded beaches, snorkel among colorful fish and maybe even spot sea turtles. Further north, Port Douglas serves as your gateway to both the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. Our travelers consistently praise the mix of activities: morning reef cruises, afternoon rainforest walks and cultural experiences with local Aboriginal guides. The Cairns-based tours really excel at balancing structured activities with free time, letting you choose between additional reef trips, market visits and cooling off in the lagoon pool.

When's the Best Time to Visit Different Parts of Australia?
You'll find Australia's huge size means you've got different perfect times depending where you want to go. Winter from June through August is actually ideal if you're heading to the Outback and Uluru - the cooler temps make exploring much more comfortable. Spring's really special in Western Australia around September to November with amazing wildflowers everywhere and if you're lucky you might spot whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef. Looking to hit the beaches? Summer's your friend from December to February especially along the East Coast where you can surf Byron Bay or snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. Fall's brilliant for Tasmania around March to May and you've got to check out the penguins on Kangaroo Island at the Penneshaw Penguin Centre.
How Can You Experience Aboriginal Culture First-Hand?
There's some really authentic ways to connect with Aboriginal traditions right across Australia. Over in Western Australia the Dabungool Cultural Experience near Esperance is fantastic - local Wudjari Nyungar guides show you everything from bush tucker to traditional medicine and explain their fascinating six seasons. If you're heading to Kangaroo Island you can join Anangu artists for dot-painting workshops where they'll teach you all about their symbols and stories. Up in the Flinders Ranges the Adnyamathanha guides at Wilpena Pound share amazing insights about bush mai their artifacts and medicinal plants plus you'll experience a traditional smoking ceremony.
What Natural Areas Can You Explore Outside the Cities?
Australia's packed with incredible national parks and each one's got its own character. Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park in South Australia is mind-blowing - you can get there by 4WD or join a guided tour to really understand what you're seeing. If you're up for a proper hike the Cradle Mountain Overland Track in Tasmania starting at Ronny Creek is unforgettable especially with experienced guides camping under the stars. Over on Kangaroo Island Flinders Chase National Park feels like another planet with its crazy rock formations and you'll see fur seals everywhere - definitely worth taking a guided tour to get the most out of it.
What Are Some Hidden Gem Routes Around Australia?
Want to get off the tourist track? The West Coast is incredible on an 8-day boutique tour where you'll explore the weird and wonderful Pinnacles Desert catch your own lobsters in Kalbarri and snorkel Ningaloo Reef. If you're after real outback adventure the Oodnadatta Track's your answer - it's properly remote with amazing lunar landscapes perfect for 4WD camping trips. The Great Ocean Road in Victoria's a bit more accessible but still stunning with those famous Twelve Apostles and lovely little beach towns along the way. People love these routes because they show you the real Australia away from the crowds.
How Do You Get Around Australia?
Getting around's pretty straightforward once you know your options. Domestic flights connect all the major cities with loads of flights between Sydney Melbourne Cairns and Perth. Renting a car gives you total freedom especially for coastal drives and exploring regional areas. If you'd rather not worry about the details guided tours are brilliant particularly for tricky spots like the Outback and Uluru - plus you get all the local knowledge. Really it comes down to how you like to travel where you want to go and what your budget looks like.
