Wonderful 11-Day Tour of Rajasthan – Incredible Experience with a Few Important Notes Our family of four (all adults) recently completed an 11-day private tour of Rajasthan, India. Overall, it was a beautiful and highly varied trip that gave us a wonderful impression of the country. We thoroughly enjoyed our time, but there are a few aspects future travelers should be aware of. The Absolute Highlight: Our Chauffeur Sandeep Singh Our driver, Sandeep Singh, was fantastic and truly made our trip! He is an exceptionally skilled driver who navigated the chaotic and busy Indian traffic with total confidence, making us feel safe at all times. His car was always spotless, he provided fresh water daily, and he was incredibly punctual. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him to ensure we were comfortable. Thank you so much again, Sandeep! Vehicle Comfort & Itinerary Pace The car was comfortable for four people during regular stretches. However, on days when local guides joined us in the cities, three adults had to sit in the back seat. While this is perfectly fine for short drives, it becomes uncomfortable during the 5-to-6-hour journeys between cities. It is worth noting that while the vehicle has a third row with two extra seats, one must remain folded down to accommodate the luggage for four adults. Hotels, Heritage Forts & Food The accommodations were generally good, though quality varied. • Minor issues: In one hotel room, we lacked hot water twice. • Agra: The hotel was undergoing major renovations on the third floor. Being placed on the second floor meant some noise disruption during the day, though luckily they did not work at night and we were mostly out sightseeing. • The Heritage Forts: Staying in historical forts (Chanwa and Sardargarh) was a lovely experience thanks to the stunning locations, history, and beautiful gardens. The rooms are a bit dated, but they were already working on renovations. In Chanwa, the atmosphere was lively with two tour buses present and live musicians. In Sardargarh, we were the only guests in late September, so there were no cultural activities, but the fantastic views made up for it. The food at both forts was good. • The Downside: The swimming pools at both forts were poorly maintained and not clean. Furthermore, the sunbeds surrounding the pools were filthy and very uncomfortable, which was a disappointment. Guides and Safaris The quality of the local guides varied: • The Safari: It was a fun experience, but your chances of spotting a tiger during an afternoon safari in late September are very slim. Zone 1 to 5 (where chances are highest) do not open until October 1st; we were restricted to Zone 6. • Udaipur & Pushkar: While most guides were good, the guide in Udaipur rushed through the itinerary and changed the program completely. The guide in Pushkar was highly disappointing—he refused to listen to our wishes, tried to push us into tourist shops, and took us to a camel camp where animals were poorly treated (one camel even had a bleeding nose wound). He also insisted on taking us to a poorly reviewed restaurant. When we chose a different place, he awkwardly sat at our table. To make matters worse, the dish we ordered there was served undercooked twice. Organization and Booking Issue (A Critical Warning) Communication with Karni from Swastik India Journeys was excellent from the start—he always responded quickly and thoroughly. However, there was one major incident that almost cost this review a star. Upon arriving at our hotel in the middle of the night, we were suddenly informed that a solo female traveler from another country would be picked up the next morning to join our tour. I had explicitly booked and confirmed a private tour via TourRadar and Karni himself, which was clearly stated on our booking confirmation. I had to spend an hour in the middle of the night arguing with Karni to resolve this, costing us precious sleep and causing an incredibly stressful, furious start to our holiday. Karni claimed we had booked a group tour and that this lady did not want to travel alone. In reality, accommodating her in our car with two extra suitcases would have been physically impossible anyway. It felt like an attempt by the agency to save costs on a separate driver and guide. Only after I made it absolutely clear that we would under no circumstances accept another passenger did he back down. This situation was entirely unnecessary. Conclusion Despite the stressful start, the rest of the trip from day two onwards was fantastic. We had a memorable vacation and ultimately enjoyed it very much. We highly recommend booking this tour because Rajasthan is beautiful, but we strongly advise making airtight, explicit agreements with Swastik beforehand regarding the private nature of your tour. And if you get the chance, ask for Sandeep as your driver!
