The tour is excellent in terms of what it covers. What truly made this trip special, however, was Miguel, the tour leader. He is extremely friendly, highly knowledgeable about all the countries, and very accommodating. His presence genuinely elevated the entire experience. The itinerary includes all five countries, with Nicaragua receiving the most comprehensive coverage. You won’t see much of El Salvador or Costa Rica, but the tour description is accurate and not misleading. I would strongly recommend arriving in Guatemala about a week earlier to explore places like Flores and Tikal, hike Acatenango, and then staying longer in Costa Rica after the tour ends. One pleasant surprise for me was how much I enjoyed the visits to Managua and the city tour in San José. The hotels were generally very nice—sometimes even too nice for just a one-night stay. A few had minor issues, such as lack of hot water, but since these were short stays and I consider myself more of a budget traveler, it wasn’t a major concern. We took the December–January departure, which coincided with the holiday season, and Miguel made a real effort to include festivals and local celebrations happening in each country. That added a special and authentic touch to the trip. My only real complaint—and this is not the fault of Miguel or the company—was the group demographic. The group was considerably older than I expected, which was challenging for me (I’m in my early 40s). I was hoping for more activity and a faster pace, but we were often limited by some travelers in their 60s and 70s who were uncomfortable with being even slightly uncomfortable. There was a fair amount of complaining about things like bus seats or food, which at times became a bit of a downer and affected the overall vibe. Despite that, I’m very glad I did this trip. I think the tour could be improved by adding an extra day in El Salvador—perhaps to explore the Pacific coast or spend more time in the capital. I’m also not entirely convinced that Monteverde was the best choice in Costa Rica. We may have been unlucky with the weather, but after visiting Manuel Antonio, Arenal, and Tortuguero post-tour, I felt those destinations might have been stronger options (though I’m still glad I experienced Monteverde). Overall, I very much enjoyed this tour, group dynamics aside. Miguel was outstanding, and the trip simply would not have been the same without him and his patience.

There were only three of us on this trip. One guide handled Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador; the second guide met us in Nicaragua. The first guide was quite good--a guide who also drove. The second was not as good--a driver who also guided. We had local guides throughout, and they handled the details, especially in Nicaragua. I understand that this is a low-to-moderate trip, but still our introduction to Nicaragua came as a surprise. We made a "beach landing," wading in from about eight inches of water. In general, I got what I paid for.

- Spring 2026
Spring tours flowing through Central America create a perfect blend of cultural depth and outdoor experiences when conditions are at their best. The well-traveled paths connect Nicaragua's volcanic terrain, Guatemala's rich heritage sites and also Costa Rica's diverse natural areas. Our tour guests tell us they love combining views of active lava at Masaya Volcano, cool dips in Lake Nicaragua by Ometepe Island, and traditional crafts like mask-making in Monimbo village. These in-depth journeys feature homestays where local families share meals and Spanish conversation, walks with expert guides through Copan's UNESCO ruins, and hands-on cooking sessions making pupusas in Suchitoto. Many travelers choose paths that include soaring through Monteverde's misty forest canopy and floating Tortuguero's waterways to spot native wildlife. The spring timing works especially well for mixing cultural connections with outdoor activities - you might find yourself learning traditional indigo dyeing techniques with local artisans between volcanic hikes and beach time at Manuel Antonio, where monkeys and sloths move through the forest above.

- Summer 2026
Summer in Central America opens up some of our most varied experiences. The full journey begins in San Jose where you'll explore local life and sample regional foods at Central Market before heading to Manuel Antonio's pristine beaches - keep your eyes up for monkeys and sloths in the trees above. Another excellent route covers Nicaragua and Guatemala, letting you try traditional mask-making in Monimbo, slide down Cerro Negro volcano and stay with island families on Ometepe. Our guests particularly like how these summer trips mix cultural activities with cool breaks in places like Monteverde's misty forest and also La Fortuna's natural swimming holes.

Our winter tours through Central America blend cultural discovery with outdoor exploration. The main route connects Nicaragua's colonial heritage to Costa Rica's natural wonders - you'll watch active lava flows at Masaya Volcano and take refreshing swims in Lake Nicaragua near Ometepe Island. We've also got a great option mixing Guatemala's ancient landmarks with hands-on pupusa cooking in El Salvador and also visits to Honduras' Copán ruins. Our travelers tell us they love how these winter trips balance guided activities with free time to wander Granada's old quarter or try local street food in León.
