10 Day Central America Itinerary, incl. Guatemala City and Antigua
A rich tour of 15 destinations across three Central American countries unfolds over ten days. Maya sites from Tikal to Copán reveal ancient mysteries, while Rio Dulce's jungle canals and Lake Atitlán's indigenous villages showcase natural beauty. - Day 1
Guatemala City
Fly into La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City. Note that this tour only runs on Mondays and Fridays. Use your free evening to rest and get used to the altitude (4,897 feet above sea level).
- Day 2
Guatemala City to San Salvador (270 km)
Head out early to El Salvador's capital. Visit Joya de Cerén, known as the "Pompeii of the Americas." Remember to pack water and sun protection since there isn't much shade at the site. This well-preserved Mayan village shows you aspects of daily life that other ruins can't match.

San Salvador to Copán
Start with a visit to Santa Ana before crossing into Honduras. Have your passport ready as border crossing usually takes 30-45 minutes. Spend your afternoon exploring Copán's beautiful carved stelae and hieroglyphic stairway. Plan your visit for early in the day when the light is perfect for photographing the detailed carvings.

Copán to Río Dulce
Stop at Quiriguá Archaeological Park to see the tallest stelae in Central America, reaching over 35 feet. Then continue to Río Dulce for a refreshing change from ruins to Guatemala's green riverside scenery. Pack layers as the weather varies quite a bit between the highlands and the tropical river area.

Río Dulce to Flores
Take a morning boat through the river canyon to Livingston, where you can experience Guatemala's Garifuna culture. You'll see an interesting blend of Caribbean and Mayan influences. Bring binoculars for the boat ride if you want to spot local birds like herons and kingfishers.

Tikal Day Trip
Leave early for Tikal (1 hour from Flores). Begin at Complex Q and R before it gets too hot. The site is huge, so wear comfortable walking shoes and bring plenty of water. Take an evening flight back to Guatemala City.

Chichicastenango & Lake Atitlán
Visit the famous Chichicastenango market in the morning (only runs Thursday and Sunday). A recent visitor shared: "Get there by 8AM before tour buses arrive. The vegetable market behind the church is where locals shop - much more authentic than the tourist section." Drive to Lake Atitlán in the afternoon.

Lake Atitlán Communities
Take the 8AM boat to San Juan La Laguna to visit local cooperatives and learn about chocolate making and natural textile dyeing. Book morning boats since the lake gets rough in the afternoon. Head to Antigua later in the day.

Antigua
Take a walking tour of this UNESCO World Heritage city. Visit the main plaza and La Merced church in the morning for the best photos. Spend your afternoon exploring the cobblestone streets on your own. Stay in the central historic area where it's safer and you can walk everywhere.

Departure
Travel from Antigua to Guatemala City airport (about 1 hour). Try to book afternoon flights to avoid morning traffic.
10 Days in Belize and Guatemala, incl. Caye Caulker and Antigua
From Caye Caulker's shores to colonial Antigua, this route covers 10 key destinations across Belize and Guatemala. Visit Tikal's ruins, connect with Lake Atitlán's indigenous communities, and climb Pacaya Volcano during this 10-day adventure.
- Day 1
Belize City to Caye Caulker
Take a 45-minute water taxi from Belize City to Caye Caulker. Book morning flights to Belize City since afternoon water taxis often get canceled due to weather. The island is car-free, so rent a bike or walk the sandy streets to get around.
- Day 2
Caye Caulker
Spend a full day on this relaxed Caribbean island. Book snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve in the early morning when the water is calmest. "The water is so clear you can see fish swimming right from the docks—bring water shoes as the coral beaches can be sharp."
- Day 3
Caye Caulker to Flores (Guatemala)
Take an early boat back to Belize City and catch the 9 AM shuttle to Flores. The journey takes 6 hours. Bring cash for border fees ($20 USD each way). Pick a seat on the right side of the shuttle for the best views through the jungle.
- Day 4
Tikal Ruins
Start at 4:30 AM to see Tikal. Bring breakfast and lots of water since it gets very hot by 10 AM. The sunrise view from Temple IV over the misty jungle is incredible. The site is big, so wear good walking shoes. You'll walk about 6-8 miles.
- Day 5
Flores to Lanquin
Get ready for an 8-hour drive on mountain roads. Take the early morning shuttle. Consider motion sickness pills if you need them. Stay in Lanquin town since the roads to Semuc Champey are rough.
- Day 6
Semuc Champey
Visit this stunning natural site. You'll need to hike up to see the limestone pools from the viewpoint. Bring water shoes since the rocks get slippery. Skip the cave tours during rainy season (June-October) when water levels are high.
- Day 7
Lanquin to Panajachel
Travel 9 hours to Lake Atitlan. You'll reach Panajachel by evening. The town sits high up at 5,000 feet. Bring a light jacket for cool evenings, especially from December through February.
- Day 8
Lake Atitlan Communities
Visit San Juan La Laguna and Santiago Atitlan by boat. Book morning trips since the lake gets rough later in the day. Try a Mayan family homestay: "Having dinner with our host family and learning to make tortillas by hand was the highlight of our Guatemala experience."
- Day 9
Panajachel to Antigua
Check out Panajachel's market in the morning before taking a 3-hour shuttle to Antigua. Pack light or use a backpack since rolling suitcases struggle on the cobblestone streets.
- Day 10
Antigua and Pacaya Volcano
Finish your trip with a Pacaya Volcano hike. The climb takes 2 hours and it's steep. You can rent hiking poles for $3 USD. Skip synthetic clothes since you'll get close to hot lava rocks. Wear sturdy boots for the gravelly descent.

Fully guided private tour offering a quick overview of three countries. Hotels are 2- and 3-star but quite adequate. El Salvadore was most surprising; could have spent another day there and a day less in Antigua, Guatemala.
