Overall, the temples, landmarks, and historical sites we visited throughout Luxor and Aswan were absolutely breathtaking. The history, atmosphere, and sheer scale of everything we experienced felt surreal at times, and it truly was a memorable trip. Egypt is such a beautiful country filled with mystery, depth, and incredible culture, and I’m very grateful I had the opportunity to experience it. The Nile cruise, the Princess Amira, was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. The food was fantastic, the staff were warm and attentive, and the overall onboard experience genuinely felt five-star. You could tell certain staff members truly cared about creating a positive experience for guests, and that made a huge difference. There were also aspects of the tour itself that I appreciated. I enjoyed having free time at many of the sites, as it allowed me to explore at my own pace and really take in the atmosphere without constantly feeling rushed. Our guide was a lovely person with a great sense of humour, and he definitely helped keep the group in good spirits throughout the trip. However, I do think there were several areas where the overall experience could have been significantly improved. At many of the temples and historical sites, the guiding often felt quite surface-level. Typically, we would receive a quick 10–15 minute explanation or story connected to one specific event, ruler, or section of the site, and then be left to explore the rest largely on our own. While I understand wanting to give people freedom, it often felt like a missed opportunity to go deeper into the actual history, symbolism, architecture, and meaning behind these incredible places. At times, the guide would show us images or hieroglyphics in a scrapbook and encourage us to find them ourselves, rather than walking through the temples in more depth and explaining things directly at the sites. Considering how historically rich these locations are, I do feel the experience could have been far more immersive and educational. There were also multiple hiccups throughout the trip that made the overall experience feel much more stressful and disorganised than it should have been. Communication was one of the biggest issues. Flight details, schedules, and important information were often only provided a day or two beforehand, which created unnecessary anxiety. In addition, the itinerary on the website did not always match the itinerary we were later given during the trip, which caused confusion about what activities were happening on which days. While things generally worked out, it often felt like we were left guessing instead of being properly informed, and for an organised tour, that was disappointing. Another frustrating aspect was the way “break times” were handled throughout the trip. Many of the breaks between sites were not really breaks at all, but rather stops at perfume stores, stone sculpture shops, souvenir stores, or markets where there was pressure to purchase items. While some of these places were initially interesting to visit, over time it began to feel less like an optional cultural stop and more like a forced shopping experience. It was exhausting constantly being approached to buy things during moments that were meant to be downtime to rest, recharge, or simply breathe between major historical sites. At times, it felt like there was an unspoken expectation to spend money, even if nobody explicitly said so. This also applied to some of the optional paid experiences, such as the Nubian Village visit, which felt far more centred around shopping and vendors than genuine cultural or historical depth. The most concerning part of the trip, however, was a serious incident involving another tour guide at one of the sites. Members of our group experienced both verbal and physical aggression after following instructions given by our own guide. People in our group were aggressively shouted at and physically blocked in a way that felt completely unacceptable and intimidating. Regardless of any misunderstanding or local site rules, nobody should ever feel threatened or physically intimidated while travelling, especially on a guided tour where safety and support should be a priority. What made the situation worse was the response afterwards. When we approached our guide about what had happened, the conversation immediately felt dismissive. He quickly identified the other guide by asking, “Was it the Spanish guy?”, which showed he clearly knew who the person was. However, when we asked for more information or attempted to make a formal complaint regarding the verbal and physical aggression, the conversation was repeatedly redirected or shut down. It felt like there was a real lack of empathy and accountability surrounding what had taken place — almost as though protecting the other guide was more important than properly addressing the concerns of the people affected. I personally found the situation quite triggering, and I can only imagine how much more confronting it may have been for the women and other members of the group who experienced it directly. Incidents like that can genuinely affect people emotionally and psychologically, particularly when you are in a foreign country and relying on guides and tour operators to help create a safe environment. To be completely honest, I think this incident could have affected people far more severely had our group not been made up of such kind, grounded, and supportive individuals. The people on this tour were genuinely incredible souls who looked out for one another and helped keep morale positive throughout difficult moments. If the group dynamic had been different, I could easily see how an experience like that could ruin someone’s trip entirely or leave them feeling deeply unsafe. Despite all of this, I still had a positive experience overall because Egypt itself is absolutely magical. The temples, tombs, landscapes, and history are unlike anything else in the world, and the cruise experience was genuinely outstanding. I just truly believe this trip could — and should — have been much easier, smoother, and more enjoyable than it was. Better communication, more structured and in-depth guidance at the sites, genuine break times instead of repeated shopping stops, and stronger support during serious incidents would have made a massive difference. I would still recommend visiting Egypt because it is an unforgettable destination, but I think it’s important for people booking tours like this to go in with realistic expectations and understand that the experience may not always be as seamless or as well-supported as advertised.
