This was a great tour! We visited Bogotá, Medellín, Santa Marta, Tayrona National Park, and Cartagena. My highlights were the tour of District 13 in Medellín, the hike in Tayrona, and the cooking class in Cartagena. I would recommend adding in extra days if you have the time because traveling between cities uses up a lot of your day. Diego was a great help with planning and adjusting our itinerary as needed. He also got back to us quickly if we needed anything while we were on the trip. The location of our hotels was great and we really liked the guides we had in each city. We never felt unsafe. Remember you need your passport and proof of yellow fever vaccination to enter Tayrona! The country is beautiful and I wish we could have seen more of it!

The trip was exactly as agreed. Very good guides. Excellent communication. Good hotels. The only surprise to me was that I had a private guide all the way. I expexted the trip to be a series of modules in which I would travel in small (international) groups

While receiving a finalized schedule was a bit delayed, all of our transport smooth and organized, our local guide Roberto was friendly and knowledgeable, and each day’s featured excursions ended up being the source of core memories for our trip. I’m grateful for Responsible Travel South America’s responsive nature to answering any questions or concerns that we had, and for helping to make planning our time in Cartagena a bit easier!

Cartagena's UNESCO-listed Old Town sits along Colombia's Caribbean coast, where kayaking trips cross Cartagena Bay with city skyline views. La Boquilla's mangrove forests provide habitat for scarlet ibis and herons. El Totumo Volcano lets you float in therapeutic mud before rinsing off in a coastal lagoon and having traditional lunch. 3-star hotels in the historic center or Bocagrande district provide your base, with English-speaking guides leading activities including walks through San Felipe Fortress and canoe tours through winding mangrove channels.

Best tour companies for Colombia tours
Looking at traveler feedback across different tour companies, G Adventures and OneSeed come out quite well in the ratings. Our customers consistently mention how smoothly their trips run, and they really appreciate having guides who know their stuff. Both companies also get high marks for their ethical practices and responsible tourism approach. On the flip side, we've had some less positive feedback about TruTravels from people who've booked with us. The main issues they bring up are itineraries that feel rushed or poorly thought out, pretty basic accommodation options and a general feeling that they didn't get what they paid for. Lead Adventures has run into similar problems - their hotel choices have been a particular sticking point for many travelers and people often tell us the actual trip doesn't match what was promised in the itinerary. Quite a few customers have mentioned arriving at destinations only to find schedule changes they weren't told about. G Adventures and OneSeed really stand out because they're consistently delivering what they promise. Their guides tend to be locals who know the areas inside out, and they're good at handling all those small details that make a trip run smoothly. Whether it's transport logistics, accommodation quality or just having someone knowledgeable to answer questions, they seem to have figured out the right formula.
Best places to start your Colombia tour
Most people kick off their Colombia trip from Bogota - it's the starting point for 54 of our tours, while Cartagena handles 16 departures, Santa Marta runs 11 tours and Medellín and Leticia round things out with 9 and also 3 tours. Looking at our booking patterns, you'll want to lock in your tour about 50 days ahead to sort out flights and visas comfortably. If you're thinking about December or July trips, book even earlier since these popular months fill up fast. Our travelers tell us two weeks is the sweet spot for seeing Colombia's highlights, though three weeks gives you room to explore lesser-known spots and really dig into the culture. Want to dodge the crowds? Try April-June or September-November - you'll often find better deals and good weather in most places, though keep an umbrella handy for those afternoon showers that pop up here and there.

Best time to visit Colombia
- Winter 2025 / 2026
During winter months between December and March, our most popular Colombian tours tend to focus around the Caribbean coast where sunny days meet comfortable temperatures. Several top-rated tours begin with rich cultural experiences in Cartagena's historic quarter before taking travelers up the coast to indigenous communities and pristine beaches in Tayrona National Park. Our comprehensive 12-day routes include time at coffee farms in the temperate Andean region, where you'll learn traditional roasting methods and stay in authentic haciendas. Active travelers particularly enjoy our Lost City treks during this season - the drier weather makes those jungle trails and river crossings much more manageable. For those seeking both culture and comfort, our premium 9-day tours mix guided visits to Bogota's Gold Museum, relaxed walks through Medellin's transformed neighborhoods and also plenty of free time to explore colonial architecture and local food scenes.

- Spring 2026
Colombia's spring tours blend cultural encounters with active exploration in compelling ways. Our travelers start their journey in Medellín with local guides leading them through the transformed Comuna 13, before moving on to conquer El Peñol's 650 steps in Guatapé. Coffee region visits peak during this season, where guests work alongside farmers, discover traditional roasting techniques, and wander beneath soaring wax palms in the Cocora Valley. Many of our coastal routes combine the colonial streets of Cartagena, visits to indigenous communities near Tayrona National Park and also refreshing swims in Minca's hidden waterfalls. The Lost City treks see high demand in spring, when weather patterns create perfect conditions for hiking the Sierra Nevada mountain trails. Our customers consistently tell us how much they value the mix of active challenges like river tubing, waterfall exploration, coffee farm visits and also traditional craft demonstrations in local villages. These spring itineraries particularly appeal to those seeking physical challenges balanced with genuine cultural connections.

- Summer 2026
Colombian summer tours showcase distinct experiences across the country's diverse regions, with several standout routes worth noting. Multi-day journeys begin in Cartagena's colonial quarter, heading north to secluded beaches and local communities in Tayrona National Park, where travelers split time between swimming in hidden coves and absorbing indigenous culture. The coffee region maintains pleasant temperatures, perfect for wandering beneath towering wax palms and joining family farms to learn traditional roasting methods. Adventure seekers take on the Lost City trek - a demanding 4-day expedition through jungle paths and streams that leads to ancient terraces, while providing genuine interactions with Kogi villages along the way. Our comprehensive 9-day tours combine guided explorations of Bogota's Gold Museum and laid-back walks through Medellin's evolving neighborhoods. These summer itineraries stand out for balancing active exploration with cooling breaks, from dips in jungle waters during the Lost City hike to afternoon snorkeling excursions near the Rosario Islands after cultural visits.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Colombia's autumn tours deliver an excellent blend of comfortable temperatures and cultural experiences, starting with guided walks through Bogotá's historic streets. Our coffee region routes let you stay in working haciendas, learn traditional roasting techniques and join the seasonal harvest activities. The weather makes exploring especially pleasant, with travelers finding the Cocora Valley hikes among towering wax palms more enjoyable in the mild conditions. Over on the Caribbean coast, where crowds have thinned out nicely, you'll discover Cartagena's colonial treasures and meet indigenous communities near Tayrona National Park, all while enjoying ideal beach weather. A popular 7-destination itinerary earns high marks from our guests, who appreciate its well-planned progression through coffee estates, mountain paths and coastal villages. For those seeking more depth, our 12-day program combines the Lost City trek with visits to colonial sites during less humid conditions. What makes autumn special is how our guides weave local harvest festivals and seasonal traditions into each journey, particularly at the coffee estates, where you can join in picking and processing beans using time-honored methods.
