7 Days in Colombia, incl. Santa Marta and Lost City Trek
Ancient pathways lead through 44km from Santa Marta via El Mamey to Ciudad Perdida. Daily 4-6 hour treks pass Kogi villages to camps like Teyuna Paraiso, culminating at the Lost City's ruins beyond 1,200 historic steps.

- Day 1
Santa Marta
Arrive in Santa Marta and get your bearings. Take time to buy any supplies you still need. Insect repellent is essential - as one traveler points out: "Nothing dries in the jungle...you don't need more than two outfits. One to sleep in and another to hike in, wash, and wear again the next day." The area near Parque de Los Novios is ideal for finding gear shops.

- Day 2
Santa Marta to Ricardito Camp
Start with a 2.5-hour 4x4 ride to El Mamey village where your trek begins. The first day includes a 4-hour hike through farmland and jungle. Pack light since you'll carry your own gear unless you opt for a mule ($40-50/day). The path takes you through Kogi indigenous communities before reaching the first basecamp.

- Day 3
Ricardito Camp to Teyuna Paraiso Camp
- Day 4
Lost City Exploration
Start before sunrise to climb the 1,200 ancient steps to Ciudad Perdida. You get about 3 hours to explore the sacred sites at 1,200m elevation. "The experience of hiking in the Lost City fully delivers," one reviewer shared. Afterward walk 5 more hours through banana and cacao plantations to Mumake Camp.
- Day 5
Mumake Camp to Las Cascadas Camp
Begin early for another full day of hiking. In rainy season (April-November) river crossings can be waist-deep. Bring dry bags for your daypack. The camp offers basic facilities with power only from 5-9pm. You can refill treated water at all camps.
- Day 6
Return to Santa Marta
Your final morning of jungle trekking takes you back to Machete Pelao before a 4x4 returns you to Santa Marta. One experienced trekker advises: "Light long hiking pants are a must on the last day to avoid ticks!" The afternoon is free for rest.
- Day 7
Departure
The tour ends after breakfast. If time allows visit the free Gold Museum or Quinta San Pedro Alejandrino (23,000 COP entry) to learn about local history.
7 Day Colombia Itinerary, incl. Bogotá and Amazon
This 7-day Colombian trip covers 4 destinations from Bogotá to the Amazon Rainforest. Hike to mystical Guatavita Lake at 3,000 meters elevation to find the legendary El Dorado site of the Muisca people. Cruise the Amazon River to Puerto Nariño eco-village, spot pink dolphins in Tarapoto Lakes, and visit the Maikuchiga Foundation's primate conservation center in Mocagua.

- Day 1
Bogotá Arrival & Orientation
Your Colombia adventure begins in Bogotá at 2,640 meters above sea level. Take a relaxed first day to adjust to the altitude. Visit La Candelaria district in the afternoon when tourist crowds are smaller. Consider staying in Chapinero or Zona Rosa for better restaurants and safer nighttime walks instead of La Candelaria.

- Day 2
Guatavita Lake Day Trip
Start early at 7 AM to avoid traffic on the northern highway. The drive to Guatavita Lake takes about 2.5 hours. This legendary El Dorado site sits at 3,000m elevation. Pack warm clothes as morning temperatures can be cool at 10°C. The rim hike takes about 2 hours. Bring shoes with good grip since trails can get slippery. You'll be back in Bogotá by late afternoon.

- Day 3
La Cota Biopark & City Exploration
- Day 4
Bogotá to Amazon (Leticia)
Catch a morning flight to Leticia. The 3.5-hour journey takes you to a completely different climate, so pack light clothes that dry quickly. After lunch at a floating restaurant, visit Victoria Regia Nature Reserve to see giant Amazon water lilies. Take a 2-hour boat ride to Puerto Nariño and watch for dolphins at sunset on Tarapoto Lakes.

- Days 5-6
Puerto Nariño & Amazon Exploration
Puerto Nariño is a peaceful car-free village perfect for your Amazon base. Take boat trips on the Loretoyacu and Amacayacu Rivers to visit indigenous communities. The Tikuna people in San Martin are a 1-hour boat ride away. You can also visit the Maikuchiga Foundation's primate conservation work. Protect your camera gear from afternoon rain. As one visitor shared: "The early morning river mists and pink dolphin sightings near Puerto Nariño were magical – but bring good mosquito repellent, you'll need it!"

- Day 7
Return to Bogotá & Departure
Take a morning boat back to Leticia for your flight to Bogotá. Remember to bring cash for the tourism tax (45,000 COP) at Leticia airport. From July to December when water levels are low, you might need help with luggage on the steep riverbanks.

What people love about 7-day Colombia tours
- Colombia - Lost City Trekking
The lost city is a beautiful place and an absolute must for people when in Colombia, it is quite challenging so need to be healthy. There was another tour that was identical to ours using the same company but offered much cheaper (some 300 dollars) than G Adventures, so would recommend looking into using Wiwa tours and skipping out the middle man
- Private Service I Best-Selling Journey: One Week in Bogotá, Medellín & Cartagena — Domestic Flights Included
The organisation looked after us well during the period, especially in Bogota and Medellin. Wendy has been so helpful as well.
- 5-Day Cartagena Backpacker Experience with Sunset Cruise and Street Food - Colombia
From the easy pick up from.the airport to the drop off everything was well organised. The guide for the private tours was excellent although with hindsight leaving the sunset trip to the last night isn't a great idea if it's cloudy. Maybe that could be more floating. The English/Spanish guide for the group trip was also amazing and brilliantly enthusiastic nothing was lost when he switched languages.
