The Great Indochina Loop actually consists of three smaller tours. The Thailand Laos tour, The Southbound Vietnam, and the Cambodia tour. If I had to rate the trip as a whole I would say it was a great trip! I had excellent tour leaders, and the travelers on my tours were great as well. Ages ranged from about 23-60 yrs old. But the median age was 30s which was great. The accommodations in Laos weren't the best, but it really got better in Vietnam and (surprisingly) Cambodia. None of the places were gross or unfit for sleeping though! The cities we visited were all very interesting and I had a lot of fun in each one. Even in the stopover town Pak Beng in Laos. However, they were all in very touristy places. Which is good and bad I suppose. Good in that the locals were able to accommodate us better and knew some English, but bad because it felt like an outsider's perspective at best. I think if I really wanted to get an authentic feel, I would have to travel without a tour group and spend more time in each city. Although, that is not to say it was inauthentic, it was just...not as authentic as it could have been. Looking back, I am glad I did a tour group instead of travelling alone through Mainland SE Asia. I just think that the tour guide really adds a lot of background information to the cities and the included activities. It was like having insider information that you would not get going by yourself or with a small group. We went during the Thai and Laos New year which was amazing. We learned a lot about how they celebrate during this time from our tour leaders Arjan and Tui. The tour leaders also take care of you if something happens and they speak the local language which can be super helpful if something happens or even at restaurants. Additionally, I think on an Intrepid tour it is easier to book smaller activities that you may not find out about otherwise. Yes they make a commision, but some of the optional activities were great value for your money. LIke cooking classes in Chiang Mai, bike tours, the bowl boat experience in Vietnam etc. The pace at the beginning of the Vietnam tour was very rushed feeling. A lot of people were just starting the Vietnam tour, but me and a few others were continuing on from Laos. Once we flew into Hanoi, it felt like non stop moving. I thought it was a bit stressful. I preferred the pace in Thailand/Laos and Cambodia. I think maybe an extra night in Hanoi for the people continuing on from Laos would have been ideal, even if it meant a night without a tour leader. I had a not so great experience in Central America on an Intrepid tour, and was hesitant to do another long tour like this one. However, The Great Indochina Loop was completely different. I loved having local tour leaders! They really made the difference. Arjan Boonyoung (Thailand), Tui (Laos), Hoàng Trung (Vietnam), and Sam Pich (Cambodia) were the best tour leaders ever! They all worked VERY hard to ensure we all had a great time and were well taken care of! They all were so patient and listened to each of us and took care of our concerns and questions. I felt very lucky I was travelling with such a cool bunch of fellow travelers as well. Some of my favorite memories were Songkran in Chiang Mai, the white temple in Chiang Rai, the slow boat tour in Thailand and Laos, Luang Prabang markets and local culture, kayaking in Vang Vieng, nightlife in Hanoi, the beauty of Halong Bay, the cyclo tour and culture tours in Hue, the markets and food in Hoi An, the coffee and hustle and bustle of Saigon, and the ANGKOR WAT tour was absolutely amazing. I made many more memories thanks to great tour leaders and friends I met on the way, but these are the ones that stand out the most.

Best tour companies for South East Asia tours
Our travelers consistently highlight a few standout companies for tours in the region. Prestigo Asia and Hoi An Express get lots of positive feedback for their well-planned trips and excellent guides - Dat from Hoi An Express gets mentioned often by name for really knowing his stuff and going the extra mile. Intrepid's cycling tours are particularly strong, with guide Seen receiving special mentions for running smooth, professional trips. Their support teams do a great job keeping everyone comfortable and on track during the rides. Something to note about Hoi An Express - while the guides are great, some of our customers mention the transport could be more comfortable and the daily schedules need clearer communication. G Adventures brings solid variety and good environmental practices to their tours, though guide quality varies between trips and you'll want to budget for some extra costs during included activities that aren't fully covered. The practical choice really depends on what you're after. For cycling specifically, Intrepid is the way to go. If you want broad cultural experiences, both Prestigo Asia and Hoi An Express deliver well-organized trips. G Adventures works if you're interested in sustainable tourism and don't mind some variable guide experiences.

Winter works perfectly for Southeast Asia with cool temps and clear skies. The multi-country tours give you proper time in each place - you'll want that extra morning at Angkor Wat when the sunrise lights up the ancient stones just right. Afternoons are free to wander Siem Reap's local markets and food stalls. Over in Halong Bay, you'll spend nights on traditional boats, kayaking to hidden coves and dining on fresh-caught seafood right on deck. These winter routes include hands-on craft workshops in Luang Prabang and early morning alms with the monks. Our customers really like how we mix guided temple visits with free afternoons to explore the local scenes and daily life.

- Spring 2026
Spring weather is just right across Southeast Asia and our river-focused tours really shine this time of year. You'll get quality time in the Mekong Delta, joining the morning buzz at floating markets, learning traditional candy-making and staying with local families in riverside homes. Up in northern Vietnam, Hanoi's Old Quarter comes alive with spring festivals and Hoi An's countryside is perfect for cycling. The morning temple visits around Chiang Mai are quieter this season, and our travelers tell us they love combining these with afternoon cooking classes and market walks. The ethical elephant sanctuaries are a highlight too - you'll see rescued elephants living naturally while learning about real conservation work.

- Summer 2026
Summer tours work smart with early starts and cultural activities when it heats up. Popular routes kick off in Bangkok with evening food tours by tuk-tuk before heading north to Chiang Mai's temples and bustling markets. Vietnam's summer itineraries mix dawn market visits with Hoi An cooking classes and afternoon cruises in Halong Bay. Our customers really appreciate how we balance active mornings with laid-back afternoons - there's always time to explore solo or cool off in local cafes. The overnight trains between stops add a real adventure element and our travelers say it's actually a comfortable way to cover more ground.
- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall creates ideal conditions for river and rural exploration. The autumn Mekong tours include two-day boat journeys from Thailand to Laos, giving you real insight into river life. You'll explore small villages, discover cave temples packed with Buddha statues and spend nights in riverside communities. Down in Vietnam's Delta, you can cycle through fruit farms, visit family workshops and learn about local trades. Our customers appreciate how these tours mix guided activities with free time to explore markets, try street dishes and find quiet temples away from crowds. Fall weather makes outdoor activities just right, whether you're biking Angkor's outer temples or paddling through Halong Bay.
