2. We should have had contact with all independent tour operators in the event of issues that arose. 3. Finally, I think that the tours should be spread out over the period and not lumped together in the last four days. Perhaps an every other day would have been less taxing. By the way the Tui operated tours were excellent and the Safari tour was also very good.

The tours were the absolute highlight of this trip. Our tour guides Maria and Darrel were both excellent. The breakfast and supper at the Central Hersonissos hotel were also excellent. The beds were hard for us, but you can ask for a topper for them, which made them very comfortable. I would highly recommend this trip, and if you get the same tour guides we did, you are in for a treat! They are both a wealth of information, and Darrel, who did our Land Rover trip, is charming, incredibly knowledgeable and full of dad jokes!

There are so many reasons why I loved this trip but the most important and integral reason was due to the ✨sensational✨ Tess ❤️ she was an absolutely incredible tour guide and I am so privileged to have had her, especially for my first solo trip. First and foremost her authentic enthusiasm and energy for every island and activity we took part in made the trip so much more enjoyable! She was so knowledgable about literally everything and despite knowing she’s done this trip a good few times before, she didn’t seem bored of it - or us - at all! Everything we did she met with a pure abundance of joy and excitement. But more importantly, Tess was so kind, compassionate and friendly. Whether I was belly laughing with her until I couldn’t breathe (normally at her accidentally making an absolute fool of herself?) , dancing till I dropped or even if I was just feeling anxious and needed a shoulder to cry on, she was there through everything. I can’t credit her enough for everything she did❤️ One of my favourite memories will always be us singing ABBA (basically at the top of our lungs & annoying everyone around us) watching Mamma Mia in Santorini! In terms of the itinerary, I felt there were some days when I didn’t feel as though I had made the most of my time; specifically Mykonos or Santorini. I think a part of this was due to being so far out from the ‘town’/busier parts of the islands as we obviously had to travel to get into them. Santorini especially, on our last full day we didn’t do anything until we watched the sunset in Ouia at about 5pm. Whilst I guess it meant we could do what we wanted during the day (and sleep in!), I felt the location of where we stayed didn’t have a whole lot to offer in our free time in comparison to Athens and Ios. I appreciate the accommodation would be more expensive moving into the hub of the island, but I just felt like I didn’t have that much to do in the day and was waiting for our activity/ies in the evening. Importantly though, this is NOT a reflection on Tess at all but more just a point about the itinerary in general ❤️ The only other point I’d like to add was the accommodation in Mykonos was not what was advertised with the photos on the website. I didn’t mind the accommodation, however I felt like I had been mislead a bit by the photos and was quite surprised to rock up to a beach hut, essentially. I do think given the price I payed, the accommodation in Mykonos could have been nicer. Overall, I loved this trip though and I am so incredibly lucky to have so many wonderful memories to take away, as well as friends for life❤️

Looking at the reviews from our travelers, Travel Zone emerges as a real customer favorite. People consistently highlight how well everything runs, and there's lots of love for staff members Irene and Effie who seem to go above and beyond.Contiki's island hopping tour stands out too, with tour manager Courtney Dailey receiving special praise. Our customers frequently mention how she combines deep local knowledge with a fun approach that makes the whole experience more engaging.Wonderful Holidays delivers reliable service across the board but there's room for improvement in their Greece Islands package. While the 4-star accommodations and fast ferries are appreciated, several travelers mentioned they'd prefer more activities included in the base price. The feedback on Destination Services is a bit mixed. Their flexible approach gets positive mentions and their team responds quickly to requests. However, The Labyrinth of Crete tour has some weak spots - mainly the hotel quality isn't quite hitting the mark and there have been some issues with transfers running late or having last-minute changes.

Where to start your Greek Islands trip
Athens works best as your starting point - 81 of our recent travelers began there, while just 7 chose Crete's Heraklion and 4 started in Santorini. The capital simply has better flight connections and easier access. Our booking data shows you'll want to lock in your trip about 4.5 months ahead (that's 139 days) to get the dates you prefer, especially during the busy June-September season. May-June or September-October hit that sweet spot our travelers love - the weather's nice enough for swimming and outdoor activities, but you'll find fewer crowds and also better prices. These shoulder months are perfect for genuine experiences in local tavernas and chatting with villagers going about their daily lives. Winter visits work well for hiking and cultural sites, though you should know some tourist spots and ferry services might be running reduced schedules.

Best time to visit Greek Islands
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter brings a different side to island hopping that many of our experienced travelers really like. Several good tours connect Athens, Santorini and Crete from December through February - it's perfect timing to explore the Acropolis and ancient sites without the usual crowds. You'll find excellent hotel deals this time of year, especially in places like Gouves and Chersonissos where 4-star stays offer great comfort and value. While beach activities slow down, our customers tell us they love having space to dive into local life - joining cooking classes, visiting olive farms and really getting to know traditional villages. Just note that some Santorini volcano tours don't run in winter, but you'll catch those famous Oia sunsets with way fewer people around.

Spring really opens up the Greek Islands, with April and May giving you perfect weather for mixing culture and outdoor activities. The multi-island trips connecting Mykonos, Paros, Naxos and also Santorini are particularly good as the water warms up. Our travelers tell us they love spring hiking through Naxian villages, meeting locals who are out harvesting herbs and preparing traditional dishes. Many tours start with guided walks through Athens' ancient sites and markets before heading out to the islands. Semi-private options work really well now - you get personal attention at historic sites while sharing scenic ferry rides with just a small group.

- Summer 2026
Summer tours balance water activities with early morning and evening cultural visits to avoid the midday heat. The best combinations run through Mykonos, Santorini and also Crete, mixing beach time with ancient palace visits and village exploration. Our travelers particularly value the Spinalonga island visits - you'll discover its fascinating past as a Venetian fortress and former leper colony. Many trips include off-road drives through central Crete's olive groves to Zeus' cave, stopping at family farms for cheese-making demos and also wine tasting. The Santorini volcano cruises are always popular, especially when timed with Oia's sunset views.

Fall creates ideal conditions for longer island stays, with September and October offering warm seas without summer crowds. Our most popular autumn tours mix Athens' cultural sites with longer visits to Mykonos and also Santorini. The sailing trips get fantastic reviews this time of year - you explore hidden coves and quiet beaches with perfect swimming and snorkeling temperatures. Several tours include special seasonal experiences like helping with grape harvests in Santorini's volcanic vineyards and joining local village festivals. Our travelers really enjoy cultural walks through Mykonos' Little Venice and along Santorini's caldera paths, where guides time everything perfectly for those golden autumn sunsets.
