About me:Originally a Police Officer from Brisbane, Australia, I joined the tourism industry in 2015 as a trip manager with Contiki who I spent 3 amazing years with showing young people around the Greek Islands, mainland Europe inc Scandinavia and South East Asia. In 2018 I took a break from coach travel and worked a summer season as a bike tour guide in Munich, Germany, with the world famous Mike's Bike Tours. In 2019 I returned to coach travel with Expat Explore and have loved every minute with this amazing company. In 2022 you will find me mostly running their Best of Greece tours, a 12 day tour of the mainland and the famous islands of Mykonos and Santorini. I hope to see you on board soon.

We took this tour in July 2024. It’s billed as a low cost tour. Every hotel was excellent and included a great breakfast. When we stayed two nights, those hotels were not in town but they were on a we…We took this tour in July 2024. It’s billed as a low cost tour. Every hotel was excellent and included a great breakfast. When we stayed two nights, those hotels were not in town but they were on a well serviced commuter train line allowing you to stay late in town. The included dinners were fine but either not representative of the region or insufficient portions. As a low cost tour, there were very few inclusions but you could pay for optionals. We opted to buy museum cards for Copenhagen and Helsinki and fared much better. The ferry rooms did NOT have windows - don’t be deceived by the images in the brochure. We were happy with our guide, Matt who was patient, kind, and professional.
The tour was good in overall.
However, the tour guider’s attitude toward Asian members in the group was suspicious. I am pretty sure that he has biased perspective on Asians.

What made the trip was the Tour Leader Matt and the driver Alex, they were brilliant BUT thats where it kinda ended, huge complaint is the hotels, budget I do not mind BUT when u have to walk 15 minut…What made the trip was the Tour Leader Matt and the driver Alex, they were brilliant BUT thats where it kinda ended, huge complaint is the hotels, budget I do not mind BUT when u have to walk 15 minutes to get to it as there are no roads large enough for the coach, or when u have to trapes up 2 flights of stairs as no lifts, and they were ALL out in the middle of nowhere, not close to anything, so if you wanted to go to main attractions u had to find own way there, which became an added expense. Extra expenses paying for public transport when some of the tours were on foot, it was not included. The meals that are included at restaurants are absolutely disgusting.
The people on the coach all fantastic and everyone got along, alot more needs to be looked into when booking the hotels by EXPAT as beyond ridiculous how far out everything was and inaccessible to get to

We learned a great deal about the country and the various ruins and ancient cities. Although that wasn't necessarily the main purpose of our trip, that was a real bonus, to gain so much knowledge during the course of our adventure. Great food, and lots of hiking. Highly recommended!

The people met and cultures experienced are beyond words and Contiki did a great job at facilitating these experiences. Transitions into each city/country were seamless and that enabled all us on the Contiki to focus our time on making the most of each experience.

Matt and Steve were always organised hardly making us wait and always telling us way in advance what was happening. When something didn't go to plan due to bad weather they would always make sure we knew. I never took their advice seriously until I saw everything they said was true. Both Matt and Steve always helped out when any of us needed anything and went above and beyond their role. I can honestly say my tour wouldn't be as nearly as amazing as it was without both Steve and Matt!

He was also really educated on all of our locations and pit stops. I met so many incredible people on this tour, and differently was not a shy persona afterwords! If anyone tours with Contiki try to get Matt as your tour guide! It is totally worth it! Hopefully I'll be lucky enough to travel with him again!

Pascal is not only a brilliant driver who tried to park the coach as close as possible for group’s access, he was also taking care of the team in many ways and his warm greetings and kind words won our hearts.
If you haven’t or only seen a couple of European countries, this trip will be the one to open your eyes or the one to expend your European experiences. Additionally, the trip is good value for money.

Matt is a historian in his own right, giving us lectures, without notes; on the history of the Country we are about to enter into. His timing on his series was perfectly timed that sets the tone of excitement for us. Another thing worth mentioning is his professionalism and efficiency in dealing with issues that could affect our schedule. But he has also to strike the balance between the time involved in dealing with the issue and the challenge presented to arived at resolving the issue at hand.
Pascal, on the other hand; is a Star, very efficient and reliable in his driving skills that puts every body at ease. His music added life to the team, keeping them entertained during the long haul. He is competent in following impromptu directions from our local tour guide, this happened because there was huge demonstrations at Budapest that time that it was required of us to changed routes. He can easily manoeuvre sharp bends and tight spots. Matt and Pascal had a great teamwork.
I am convinced they can easily get a 5 ratings each.

Matt is a self-made historian in his own right, doing history lectures to set the tone of the Country we about to enter, into. There was this sort of advanced information and perfect timing of his speech and I appreciate it so much. He did a great job in dealing with issues that could have delayed our trip, putting the interest of the person concerned first above anything else. That was commendable thing that Matt did, taking back one member of our team to the hotel to rest, and renoijoined us later. There are other instances that his leadership was put to the test, but Matt did it with firmness and with grace.
Pascal, our Coach Driver; I call him ‘The Star.’ He maintains strict compliance and efficiency in his driving even if he rencountered annoying traffic jams and tight bends yet manoeuvres perfectly. He can drive efficiently following impromptu directions from optical tour guide. This happened in Budapest, where there were thousands of demonstrators on the streets and we followed a different route to avoid the crowds. Pascal has a pleasant and likeable character.

And the tour leader should set up a group chat eg WhatsApp and send the daily times and schedule out that way. It could be used to announce birthdays daily weather etc. I know not everyone uses WhatsApp but those few who’s phones don’t have the capability can be advertised via text or verbally.
We feel there was a lack of information on this tour.
The last hotel we stayed at was very close to the airport and very loud.
The first hotel in Athens was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in Europe.
We also believe that the tour is falsely advertised. The first day was non existent. We met the tour group at 10am on the second day.
The last day is also non existent. We headed to the airport at 6.30am.
The tour should be advertised as a 6 day tour not 8.

Matt our tour leader gave us an excellent background about each country we visited.He explained clearly what we were to do each day and answering any questions that were asked.Matt was just great he has a lot of experience and knowledge.He was friendly and fun to tour with.
The busier cities we visited it would have been good to have had a street map to show how we could get around.
Our coach driver Victor did an excellent job driving long distances, dropping us of then picking us up from the places we visited. He was courteous and friendly.

Some recommendations though… charging outlet or USB on the bus is a very helpful tool for travelers especially with all the photos and videos people take on trips. Yes we can always charge overnight at the hotels but sometimes it is not enough. Cell phones are the only way we can communicate with the leader and other tour members particularly when outside the city center.
There were places where we would have preferred to stay for another night such as Nafplion or Olympia to see more of the place. Further, Is there ever a last dinner or “party” spent with all participants on the last day of the tour? We had wished there was one for us since we anda few others left - did not book for the island tours.

Matt our tour leader and Ash our driver were truly amazing and we were able to see so much more than we possibly could have on our own. The value for the money was truly impressive as well - I usually am not too excited about included meals, but the ones on this trip were all at really amazing restaurants and we felt truly spoiled! This was my first trip with Expat but it will not be my last!! Made lots of new friends and had a blast.
Everything was excellent…team leader Matt was fantastic, so was our driver. The tour is very well planned & Matt looked after everything. Can’t thank enough ????

However, time management was not always the best for me. For example, I would have preferred to have spent more time at the Culloden battle field. Less time with the Lochness monster.

The overall experience was Excellent ! The stay was comfortable in decent hotels with adequate breakfast, the sightseeing places were spectacular with great inputs by the Tour Leader - Matt or chosen…The overall experience was Excellent ! The stay was comfortable in decent hotels with adequate breakfast, the sightseeing places were spectacular with great inputs by the Tour Leader - Matt or chosen Guide/s. The Lunch / Dinner experiences were authentic Greek and we really enjoyed the local ambience.
Matt was a superb Tour Leader and held the Group together as a closely knit family.
Tasos was a deft driver and we never had any uncomfortable moment on the Bus.
I would recommend Expat Explore to ALL to experience the excellence in Touring !

Great convenience in seeing the most important places in one package. Well organized and conducted.
Every stop on the tour was amazing. The pace was robust but doable. We had some really excellent meals and our tour guide, Matt, kept things going with humor and grace.

What can I say in a simple review?
The itinerary was aggressive but worth it. We got to see most of what I wanted to for the mainland portion of the tour that I joined. All of the restaurants accommodated my special meal requests as a vegetarian so I never felt hungry! The hotels were modest but perfect for our needs; we never got a chance to hang out there much anyway! What really stood out was the breakfasts -it wasn't a simple pastry and coffee deal -each one had a full buffet. Trust me, you never left a place hungry.
All of the local guides were fantastic walking us through the ruins and artifacts, giving context and relevance to it fitting into Western culture. I learned so much.
Our bus driver diligently and efficiently moved us from place to place -and he put in a LOT of hours doing it.
But my biggest compliment has to be for our main guide, Matt. He was AMAZING. He was always approachable with questions (I think he got the same ones five times, but still patiently answered each one!). He rallied us for early mornings, entertained us with stories and movies, and kept all of us together like a good border collie. His great personality enhanced the trip -he took time to speak to each of us as individuals rather than the mob we sometimes became.
So thumbs up from me! This was great value for money and I'd love to enjoy more like it!
