Great trip. Most travelers were in their 20s, we were the oldest out of 17 being late 60s & mid 70. Everyone got along great. Lots of options regarding in hikes (could take a difficult path or an easier one). Lots of wildlife seen. Accommodation in the motels was good, each had a kitchenette or one was available. We had a triple room which worked out great for our family. Our guide was wonderful. Thanks Joe.

Best tour companies for Australia/Oceania tours
Based on their feedback, Intro Travel comes out strong with travelers giving high marks for how smoothly their trips run. People particularly connect with group leaders Ben and James, who've got a knack for keeping the energy up and making everyone feel welcome. Wild Kiwi also gets solid reviews - their buses are comfortable and come with WiFi (always a plus), and guides Robbie and Mark really know their stuff. Travelers appreciate having plenty of activity options to choose from during the journey. The 14-day New Zealand Explorer has a bit of a wrinkle though - while the program itself works well, quite a few travelers felt they were paying premium prices for basic accommodation. Several mentioned they could have arranged similar lodging for less by booking on their own. When it comes to Hakka Tours' South Island Express, the reviews are more mixed. The main issues center around accommodation quality and some organizational hiccups. A number of travelers wished they'd gotten clearer information before the trip started, which is pretty important for setting the right expectations. I'd say these companies each have their strengths, but it's worth noting the specific feedback about accommodation and pricing on certain tours - that's the kind of practical detail that can really help with planning decisions.
Best places to start your Australia/Oceania tour
Auckland comes out as our busiest starting point with 25 travelers beginning there, while Sydney sees 18 tour starts and Christchurch welcomes 10. Brisbane and Melbourne round off our main departure cities with 8 and 6 tour starts respectively. The sweet spot for booking sits around 3.5 months ahead (that's 108 days) - this timing helps you grab your preferred dates and often some early booking benefits too. For the best overall experience, aim for the quieter seasons from March to May or September to November when you'll find fewer tourists and really nice weather across both countries. Our travelers often tell us how much they appreciate that included pre-tour rest day we build in at Auckland or Sydney; it makes a real difference after those long flights from Europe or North America, letting them settle in and explore these busy cities at their own pace. This kind of planning consistently gets mentioned in feedback as something that made the whole journey start off right, especially given how far most people travel to get there.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Our winter tours through Australia and New Zealand shine between June and August. The South Pacific highlights tour is a real favorite - you'll experience Sydney's harbor scene and Cairns' tropical atmosphere even during winter months. The Aboriginal smoke ceremonies in Mossman Gorge and Great Barrier Reef snorkeling are actually better this time of year with excellent water visibility. Our younger travelers particularly like the week-long Sydney tours that include Byron Bay surfing and Blue Mountains exploration. These compact trips work nicely in winter since you can enjoy outdoor activities in mild weather, plus the smaller crowds mean more one-on-one time with local surf instructors and guides.

- Spring 2026
Spring runs from September through November, when you can really make the most of Melbourne's arts scene and Sydney's outdoor culture. The 10-day starter tours let you discover Melbourne's hidden laneways, buzzing markets and then head up to explore Sydney's harbor area. Spring is perfect for Fitzroy Island snorkeling - the water's warming up but you'll beat the summer crowds. Our New Zealand South Island routes are particularly special this time of year - you'll journey from Queenstown through glacier country when alpine flowers carpet the slopes and hiking conditions couldn't be better.

- Summer 2026
Summer tours from December through February really lean into water activities and outdoor exploration. The most popular routes start in Cairns exploring the Great Barrier Reef, then work their way down through Sydney and Melbourne. The long summer days are perfect for evening harbor cruises and coastal walks between Bondi and Bronte. New Zealand really comes into its own during summer too - our travelers love mixing Hobbiton visits with Waitomo's glowworm caves and then hiking around Lake Taupo when the trails are dry and easy to navigate.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall tours between March and May hit that sweet spot of good value and fewer crowds. Our younger travelers especially enjoy Oz Intro programs then - it's still warm enough for Byron Bay surfing but you won't find the big groups at places like Surfers Paradise. Multi-country tours work really well in autumn, letting you enjoy Australia's warm coastal areas and catch New Zealand's first snow on the Southern Alps. Our customers often mention how much they like mixing Queensland water activities with South Island hiking when the autumn colors start appearing.
