Great choice of cities in Australia. Vio Travel kept us updated of all our pick up times in a timely manner. Tours in all three places were very good. Regarding accommodation the Sydney hotel was the best but the others were clean, comfortable and convenient. All in all a good tour!

The itinerary was more complete thorough than any other tour of New Zealand. It exceeded my expectations. We did countless hikes and excursions over both the North and South Island. Everyone in our group of 8 was a savvy world traveler. Our tour guide was exceptional. The insights she provided into Maori culture were fascinating. Her passion for New Zealand was contagious; and shared with our group. I highly recommend this tour whether it is a first trip to New Zealand; or you have done prior tours. You will be very satisfied with this Explore tour

Best tour companies for Australia/Oceania tours
Based on their feedback, Intro Travel comes out strong with travelers giving high marks for how smoothly their trips run. People particularly connect with group leaders Ben and James, who've got a knack for keeping the energy up and making everyone feel welcome. Wild Kiwi also gets solid reviews - their buses are comfortable and come with WiFi (always a plus), and guides Robbie and Mark really know their stuff. Travelers appreciate having plenty of activity options to choose from during the journey. The 14-day New Zealand Explorer has a bit of a wrinkle though - while the program itself works well, quite a few travelers felt they were paying premium prices for basic accommodation. Several mentioned they could have arranged similar lodging for less by booking on their own. When it comes to Hakka Tours' South Island Express, the reviews are more mixed. The main issues center around accommodation quality and some organizational hiccups. A number of travelers wished they'd gotten clearer information before the trip started, which is pretty important for setting the right expectations. I'd say these companies each have their strengths, but it's worth noting the specific feedback about accommodation and pricing on certain tours - that's the kind of practical detail that can really help with planning decisions.
Best places to start your Australia/Oceania tour
Auckland comes out as our busiest starting point with 25 travelers beginning there, while Sydney sees 18 tour starts and Christchurch welcomes 10. Brisbane and Melbourne round off our main departure cities with 8 and 6 tour starts respectively. The sweet spot for booking sits around 3.5 months ahead (that's 108 days) - this timing helps you grab your preferred dates and often some early booking benefits too. For the best overall experience, aim for the quieter seasons from March to May or September to November when you'll find fewer tourists and really nice weather across both countries. Our travelers often tell us how much they appreciate that included pre-tour rest day we build in at Auckland or Sydney; it makes a real difference after those long flights from Europe or North America, letting them settle in and explore these busy cities at their own pace. This kind of planning consistently gets mentioned in feedback as something that made the whole journey start off right, especially given how far most people travel to get there.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Our winter tours through Australia and New Zealand shine between June and August. The South Pacific highlights tour is a real favorite - you'll experience Sydney's harbor scene and Cairns' tropical atmosphere even during winter months. The Aboriginal smoke ceremonies in Mossman Gorge and Great Barrier Reef snorkeling are actually better this time of year with excellent water visibility. Our younger travelers particularly like the week-long Sydney tours that include Byron Bay surfing and Blue Mountains exploration. These compact trips work nicely in winter since you can enjoy outdoor activities in mild weather, plus the smaller crowds mean more one-on-one time with local surf instructors and guides.

- Spring 2026
Spring runs from September through November, when you can really make the most of Melbourne's arts scene and Sydney's outdoor culture. The 10-day starter tours let you discover Melbourne's hidden laneways, buzzing markets and then head up to explore Sydney's harbor area. Spring is perfect for Fitzroy Island snorkeling - the water's warming up but you'll beat the summer crowds. Our New Zealand South Island routes are particularly special this time of year - you'll journey from Queenstown through glacier country when alpine flowers carpet the slopes and hiking conditions couldn't be better.

- Summer 2026
Summer tours from December through February really lean into water activities and outdoor exploration. The most popular routes start in Cairns exploring the Great Barrier Reef, then work their way down through Sydney and Melbourne. The long summer days are perfect for evening harbor cruises and coastal walks between Bondi and Bronte. New Zealand really comes into its own during summer too - our travelers love mixing Hobbiton visits with Waitomo's glowworm caves and then hiking around Lake Taupo when the trails are dry and easy to navigate.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall tours between March and May hit that sweet spot of good value and fewer crowds. Our younger travelers especially enjoy Oz Intro programs then - it's still warm enough for Byron Bay surfing but you won't find the big groups at places like Surfers Paradise. Multi-country tours work really well in autumn, letting you enjoy Australia's warm coastal areas and catch New Zealand's first snow on the Southern Alps. Our customers often mention how much they like mixing Queensland water activities with South Island hiking when the autumn colors start appearing.

How do people usually explore Australia and New Zealand?
You'll find guided group tours are really popular especially along those classic routes between Sydney and Cairns or Auckland to Queenstown where you'll travel with about 8-20 people and get fantastic insights into Aboriginal and Māori culture. If you're after something more intimate small group adventures with 4-12 people work brilliantly in places like Tasmania's Cradle Mountain and Franz Josef Glacier where you can get up close with wildlife. Wine lovers tend to go for private tours through Hunter Valley and Marlborough Sounds because you can take your time with tastings. The adventure scene is huge too especially for younger travelers 18-35 who want to mix it up with bungee jumping in Queenstown and diving the Great Barrier Reef.
What kind of authentic indigenous experiences can you have and where do you find them?
Up in North Queensland you can join really meaningful Kuku Yalanji ceremonies at Mossman Gorge including these amazing smoking rituals and walks where you learn about rainforest medicine. Over in the Daintree you'll see traditional spear-fishing which is fascinating. Rotorua's got some of the best Māori experiences where you can actually stay overnight in a marae eat traditional hangi feasts cooked in earth ovens and learn woodcarving from masters at Te Puia. Near Cairns Tjapukai Cultural Park lets you try didgeridoo playing and boomerang throwing while Wellington's Te Papa museum offers these beautiful pōwhiri welcome ceremonies.
What are the main natural attractions outside the cities and how do you get to them?
The incredible Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park needs a combo of flights and driving from Alice Springs but it's worth it for those amazing dawn viewing platforms you reach by desert walks. Getting to the outer Great Barrier Reef is pretty straightforward with fast catamarans from Cairns or Port Douglas and you can even take helicopters to remote cays. In New Zealand Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound are accessible by road or air from Queenstown with some really cool overnight cruises available. Mount Cook National Park's got these brilliant guided heli-hiking trips on the Tasman Glacier and Waitomo's glowworm caves are amazing with expert guides taking you through limestone caverns by boat.
What local foods should you try and where's the best place to find them?
You've got to try Kaikoura's crayfish at waterfront spots like Green Dolphin or The Pier and Tasmania's oysters are incredible at Hobart's Salamanca Market. Up on the Gold Coast Moreton Bay Bugs are a must-try at the seafood restaurants and down in Queenstown you'll find amazing Central Otago pinot noir paired with local lamb at the fancy restaurants. For authentic Māori hangi meals head to Mitai Village in Rotorua and if you're in Sydney the rock oysters at Watson's Bay are pretty special.
How do you get around Australia and New Zealand?
The Ghan's an amazing train journey crossing Australia's center from Adelaide to Darwin twice weekly while the TranzAlpine gives you stunning daily trips across New Zealand's Southern Alps between Greymouth and Christchurch. You'll find loads of flights connecting major spots like Sydney-Cairns and Auckland-Queenstown throughout the day. The Interislander ferry's great for crossing between New Zealand's islands with three daily trips through beautiful Marlborough Sounds. If you're into flexibility there are luxury coaches with hop-on-hop-off options along Australia's east coast and New Zealand's main tourist routes running regularly October through March. Lots of people grab rental cars too especially for scenic drives like the Great Ocean Road and South Island's West Coast you can pick them up from any major city.
