I was mixed on giving a 5 for the tour. It is an excellent value and tour. You see so much in a short period and cover all the major sites with two days in Rome and Venice. For the price it’s well worth it all. The driver and guide were excellent and the tour is well organized. The three of us enjoyed it very much. The only reason I didn’t give a 5 was the accommodations were below par in a few locations. In Venice the rooms were small and bathrooms so tiny the toilet was next to the shower. Hard to describe. I understand that Expat keeps the costs down to make the trips affordable for all. But let’s face it you don’t spend time in the rooms anyway. Overall that’s my only complaint. The tour is great and I’ll have great memories of all. Well worth the money.

Filip is an outstanding tour guide and a really great guy. Over our 16 day tour, I found him to be kind, funny, tremendously helpful, and incredibly knowledgeable. Coming into this tour, I knew very little about the Balkans beyond the general idea that bad things had happened there in the 90's. I learned a tremendous amount from Filip about the rich and complex history, culture, and geopolitics of the region. His knowledge is really something, and goes far beyond the sort of "dates and factoids" that I came into the tour expecting, and his delivery is funny, engaging, and shows a deep level of understanding. Filip was always there for everyone on the tour, be it a helping hand getting off the bus, tracking down cold medication (on a national holiday when every single pharmacy in the entire country was closed), or running back to the hotel to sort out a passengers luggage issue. To say nothing of his ability to wrangle and organize 48 different people through 70+ stops in 10 different countries over 16 days without any incidents, which in-and-of-itself is quite a feat. He was kind, courteous, and kept everything running smoothly. On a personal note, beyond his duties as the tour leader, my wife and I immensely enjoyed getting to know Filip, he already feels very much like an old friend.
TLDR - Filip is an amazing tour guide, a really cool guy, and I hope to travel with him again.
Driver: Kleanthis
Kleanthis is a man of few words, but the interactions I did have with him were warm and genuine. Mostly, I think, he was focused on getting us where we were going safely and on time, which was quit an accomplishment. I'd say about half of the driving on the trip took place on narrow one and two lane roads that switchback high up into the mountains, with nothing but a low guardrail the bus and sheer drop offs, and some of the countries visited on this tour (heres looking at you Albania) seem to have little to no rules governing traffic. Kleanthis navigated all of those streets with a skilled ease that made for a very smooth journey.
Tour: Balkan Explorer by Expat Explorer
This was my first tour with Expat, and it was an amazing look at one of the grungier sides of the European continent, which is exactly what I was looking for. I feel like in this day and age so many places have become over-touristed, to the point where they are Disneyland versions of themselves. On this tour we got to visit places that that have been inhabited for thousands of years, cities built on history, we ate at restaurants among Greek, Roman, and Ottoman ruins, sipped drinks on sidewalks surrounded by locals. These places had the historicity of museums, but (for the most part) haven't yet become over-touristed and lost the feeling of being places where real people live. That isn't to say that there aren't other tourists, cities like Budapest and Dubrovnik are very popular destinations, but my wife and i really fell in love with some of the off-the-beaten track places we visited on the tour.
I couldn't help but read some of the negative reviews on this site, and it seems like a lot of people feel this tour is rushed. You certainly do cover a lot of ground, there are long hours of driving and a fair amount of walking to do, but I feel like that's a good thing. On a tour like this, you get to experience a lot of different places and cultures in a fairly short amount of time, giving you a preview of places you might want to return to. My wife and I absolutely fell in love with the small city of Ohrid in North Macedonia, and very much look forward to visiting there again for a longer stay. Overall, I'd say if you're looking for a relaxed, sterilized, and/or handicap accessible vacation this probably isn't the tour for you, but if you want to experience a really cool part of the world, I'd highly recommend it.

He never even bothered to introduce himself on day one never wore a expat shirt so it was difficult to find him in crowds never offered advice or recommendations and basically left every person to fend for themselves. Having been on tours before I always had great guides that were engaged and informative but Filip disappears for long lengths of time and doesn’t even answer his phone for several hours if called. He ruined our trip as we missed things we would have liked to see and undoubtedly did as little as possible to help people get around. He is an utter disgrace to expat and the other tour leads who work so hard to make sure everyone gets the most out of there trip.

I was with my husband and 2 teenagers, all of us agreed that our tour guide raised the bar of expat explore. It’s our second trip with expat this year. Its like having a 10 days of world history class with him in the coach. I dont mind going with expat again if Filip is the tour guide. Last years tour guide Roma was nice too. I just wished that they make better accommodations choices, within city center and with air conditioning.

Some of the independant walking tour guides were not so great but the tour leader for the overall tour was excellent, friendly, very knowledgable and it helped that Filip knew how to speak the language so was able to get us through many lines quicker. Our bus driver was excellent and knew quite a lot of quick ways to get us to borders and hotels without been caught in the traffic. Unfortuanately for our group we ran into the heat wave arriving in Prague and the hotel was hot but I personally found a way to combat the heat, overall for me this tour was excellent. Good memories made.

I would have rather stayed a night to make it worth it or not do it at all. One of the best parts of the trip was our guide, Filip! He was organized and SO knowledgeable! I definitely appreciated how much effort he out into preparing his "talks." I learned a lot and found it really enriched my experience.

He went above and beyond in what’s required of him by showing us around in cities even on his free time. And because of efforts, it made our stays in Dubrovnik and Budapest the highlight of the entire tour in my opinion.

My Dad is quite a hard-to-please traveler as he has expectations but he admires Filip through and through, even telling me that he hopes Filip will still be his tour guide on his next Expat tour. My Mom is quite shy being surrounded by strangers as our family usually travel privately but Filip is one of the first people who made her feel comfortable. Filip also makes sure to ask me if I know my way around the new town during our free days or if I need tickets or a trip to the grocery. He also talks to me like an old friend which I appreciated most. It was an excellent trip overall and I am sure it wouldn't have been as such without Filip's expertise in being a tour guide.

Our tour guide Filip made the adventure so much more than we could ever have imagined. With Filip’s extensive historical knowledge and sense of humour, it made exploring each place a lot of fun and more exciting. His ability to transition into each culture seamlessly was fantastic, and coupled with his passion for his work, definitely made the 26 day tour exciting and relaxing. Filip went above and beyond to ensure his group were well taken care of and ensured that each person felt like a VIP. Definitely want to tour with Filip again!

Joining in an organized tour saves a lot of the planning work for hotel and rental car booking, map search and travel/tour readings. The tour was fast paced and a lots of miles were traveled on the bus. It is a good choice if you want to see a lot of countries quickly and avoid getting yourselves too exhausted by the end of the day. Our tour guide Firo is knowledgeable and bus driver Gabi is amazing professional, everyone loves Gabi.
We were disappointed in hotel room assignment at Switzerland mountain when we couldn’t see beautiful mountain from our street-view room. We became angry the next morning when my wife found that all of street-view rooms were assigned to non-caucasian people. We were deeply hurt by the incident and the remaining of the tour became not as enjoyable. We don’t want to hear any explanation and just set the responsibility of this discrimination fact on our tour guide and Expat Explore.

For instance, we went to Pisa in the morning before the crowds came and then went to the other destination. He also caught a pick pocket in the act and kept one of our ladies from being robbed. There was a lot of free time and we were not just pointed to the metro: he took us there and taught us how it worked. So well done. Also, this trip utilizes three hotels which makes packing up much easier. We had a dinner in Venice and the entire next day free up until we took a canal ride that was crazy enjoyable. I had time to visit St. Mark's, the Correr Museum, the Naval Museum, the Rialto bridge, and go up the tower for pics. Our hotel was a short walk to the metro into Venice. I could go on. Take this trip and have a list of places in each city you want to see and you will have great memories of Italy.

Great experience! Our tour guide, Felipe was amazing. The accommodations were not bad. However, it is a very busy schedule and wished we spent a bit more time in a few of the places we visited.

After some negotiation rearranging we were allowed in however by this stage we had lost at least half an hour.
In some instances the time allotted was empul in others it was rather tight I understand this is a fine balancing act but maybe if the group has more say it might work better

Otherwise well organised. Due to taking a sharp turn my camera fell from the rack of the bus and was damaged !

Our family loved it! Our kids are older (24,22 and 15) and could keep up well. It would be hard for younger kids or older people. We are active but everyone was worn out by the time it was over. But if you want to see the most in the least amount of time, this is your tour! Carly, our tour guide, was amazing and kept us all on time and organized. We could not have done this without her. For the price, you can’t beat it! We will do another xpat explore tour.

Overall it was a good tour except that the hotels chosen were far away from the tourist attractions we're visiting which made the time spent on each places shorter. Had his girlfriend join us 2 times at later in the day and when she was around his focus was on her not the tour or group.not happy at all about hat it was wrong. Also after 2 days l developed server cellulitis and needed to see doctor or a chemist and l repeatedly asked each day a number of times also each day. I said l only need 5in in a chemist. He replied was black mail as he would say we'll you can go to a doctor but miss out on all sightseeing and activitys.as l paid to see them l did not want to miss out on all or disrupt others on your. But to go to a chemist should have been easy and no drama and only needed 5 min in one. He never pointed one out or told me where to do d on. As my condition worsened l also got a rash on my arm and then my skin brock out on my face. I became self condition got worse and had l asses to a chemist l could have prevented my skin break out and most. Likely got massive improvement with rash and legs swelling and pain. He's flirty which is fine but had young girls fooled by that and of course they think Hes great .also he said l never leave anyone behind and did more than once. First day he left 2 behind and they had to find there way back to hotel. Next time was worse he let them in another country .they had no real cash no jackets with them and they had hours of time to try and catch up. It was shocking it took them many many hours to find us and cost them over 300 europs.l was shocked it also put mist in fear of missing bus or getting lost and being left behind and lost. It was disgusting. This makes me feel I could have found a better company / tour to go with and feel safer with. Only other complaint is that he wouldn't stop not for 2 seconds to allow a quick photo or to buy even a post card souvenir as l repeatedly told him part of a trip is taking pucs and buying the souvenir. It was hard pressed walking and l meant walk really really really g.and so l did. But it was not how l thought it would be not even a second to find. We should have had a better guide. One who did realise a medical issue need to be attended to .lucky it did not get to the point l needed to go to a hospital. Just the same l needed a chemist he the guide did not help. On top of that l repeatedly asked l could not fine a chemist could he tell me or show me one he did not. And one night in Amsterdam after spending an hour looking for one with 3 other girls and not finding one. So l got back to meeting point and bus on time to leave and I'd him no chemist he said he didn't believe l looked as there should be one but l had others with me looking. Then after waiting 20 min on bus we left. As we left and drove away he came to me and said did you know there was a chemist right nest where we got on bus and it was open. My anger was he could have told me before we left and pointed it out so l could have gone but he didn't he was being a total ass at this stage we exchange words and l was so upset by this by him l now look at it zz the total let down by your company. If asked l would NOT recommend your company not the tour guide at all. Very very disappointed. I didn't enjoy it due to health issues l could have a little help and support me to get early as stance. You need a better guide. .due to his lack of help? He should it for me totally l refused to tip he due to all theses reason.

in kalambaka hotel i was seriously bitten by a spider in my bed (we think it was spider, but even if it was something else, it was bad! i spent the whole tour with a very big harsh on my back that it's still here very itchy, will have to go to doctor have a look, doesn't look good)
in olympia and epidaurus very short time (few minutes in a hurry) and the sunset in meteora that tourradar sells, never happened!

Great tour for the money. Loved seeing Greece, and the islands of Mykonos and Santorini. Sometimes didn't get information in a timely manner - too many last minute changes.

In general it was a good tour. Filip did his best. Day 4 was tiresome and having Greek dinner and dance that day was too heavy after a whole day excursions of climbing and walking in the summer heat.T…In general it was a good tour. People who share the same bathroom it was impossible and also after making the payment most of them had no other choice including me [ I chose not to anyway. Paying such 40 Euros and not able to participate was disappointing ]. Also next day 5 we had to leave the hotel early. There are days we had nothing much to do after coming to the hotel. Better to have such a nice evening and happening in one of those days since was one of the important event.

I'm a solo traveller, just before this tour, I did a previous one (Greek islands) with a different tour company, and it was supposed to be shared room…It was great! Good value for your money for sure. I'm a solo traveller, just before this tour, I did a previous one (Greek islands) with a different tour company, and it was supposed to be shared rooms with a second traveller, but instead they put me in a room with TWO other people..and one snored. I'm a light sleeper so it really affected the trip. But on this one, they gave me my own room..much more professional way to handle the odd # situation.
For a history tour, sometimes I felt it could be a bit rushed..with Delphi especially. 3 hours to a) walk to/from hotel to the site (15min each way), b) do a guided museum tour, and c) explore the ancient site itself, is way too rushed..we were literally running up the site, a couple random tourists even made fun of us for it ("You're supposed to WALK, not run!") due to how pressed for time we were. This day needs to be extended at least an hour.
Overall though it was very enjoyable..good accommodation, decent food, nice tour guide, and excellent value for what you get. Would recommend!

The most important part of the tour I was disappointed in was the fact that there were a lot of hidden extras which should have been included in the cost. Like one of the guided tours, and there was a lot of talk about museums and castles but most you needed to pay yourself to get in I would have been happy to pay a few extra hundred dollars and actually gone into some of these buildings,

FRIENDLY and HUMOROUS tour guide was Filip Liovic. He was EXCELLENT , EXTREMELY knowledgeable, well spoken and entertaining Tour guide. My 12 yo daughter loves Filip for being friendly, funny and amazing tour guide. And thank you to our Fantastic and smooth driver Sabo, he was great, we felt safe all the time.. Filip had a good history background, we lived the history in each and every place we visited. During our bus ride to each location he shared wealth of information/history, we see amazing countryside's, landmarks and sights. And once we got to each place he gave us direction where to go and places to see, and told us what time to get back to the bus. He also gave us an actual map of each location we visited, which made it easy to navigate through the town. My daughter and I like to explore on our own sometimes during free day , so it worked for us. and he gave us few local tips and right time to explore, which was more than enough to explore the place . After leaving the site's going to next destination, we had 30 minutes or an hour stop in between, before the next destination, I think it was more than enough, besides taking pictures, lunch and using bathrooms. During the trip we had a few walking tour,
a lady bus tour guide in few places , with bonus of cruising tour as well, which I loved the most. Getting up early and back late at night was really hard and exhausting, but it's worth at the end. We managed to take lots of photos and visited amazing places, with Spectacular views and breathtaking views on the way to next destination. And most of all, enjoying and spending precious one in one time, creating lifetime memories with my daughter. HUGE thank you to Filip for being AMAZING tour guide, we were enriched by lessons in history, language, culture and customs. My daughter and I had a fabulous time.. Well worth of money. Will love to do it again next time.. hoping Filip will be our tour guide again. FIVE STAR PLUS for you Filip.. CHEERS.

- Laundry facilities. Since only allowed 1 suitcase it would have been nice to have 1 or 2 places to get some laundry done. It was offered at one hotel but to…Only 2 reasons this tour didn’t get 5/5.

Still wondering what such a highly educated human being is doing working as a tour guide(nothing wrong with that but he could be a college profesor) but education system lost is our win as well as Expact.
