Hi... Home too soon and reflecting on how great our trip with Intrepid was. We usually make our own arrangements when we travel. Though older, we do NOT enjoy the big bus experience. However, as we slip into our 70s, it's tougher to arrange all complexities of a trip. Since we are explorers at heart, we thought we'd try a small group trip. So...signed onto Scandinavia Explorer with Intrepid. How wonderful to be so independent yet not have to make all the arrangements. Hrvoje, our guide, was a walking encyclopedia about the sites and both fun and informative. And enjoyed meeting an Aussie lady to share our experiences. A very relaxed sort of trip. We will book another. So 5 stars!!! A little disappointed about the bike ride cancellation, but soon realized that street construction and other circumstances were the cause. One tip, however. On the small cruise part of our trip, we ended up in separate rooms. Not our guide's fault (he was the best), but perhaps with prior forewarning, we could've paid a little supplement to be in the same room even with separate single beds. We've been all around the world yet found ourselves wide-eyed with discoveries on this trip. Small trips like this allow one to meet the locals, too. Can't believe it's over. Although memories aren't. Thank you. What a charming almost fairy tale intro to Norway, Sweden, and Finland! Tom and Sherry Miller from U.S.A.

Greg is a fantastic tour director who truely shares his passion of travel with the group. Highly organised and professional at all times. Enjoyed all the extra treats along the journey. Finally Greg also shares the same passion and taste of music as me so enjoyed the chats.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter in Scandinavia puts the focus on Arctic experiences and Northern Lights viewing. The 10-day route starts in Copenhagen's cozy cafes before heading to Lillehammer where you can actually ride the same bobsleigh track used in the Olympics. Moving into Swedish Lapland, our travelers join husky teams for adventures through Björkliden's snow-covered landscape and learn to survive overnight in the Arctic wilderness. The route includes time at Santa's workshop in Rovaniemi and continues to Tromsø, where our customers often catch those ethereal Northern Lights dancing overhead. These tours run November through March with temperatures well below zero - but our travelers tell us the unique experiences make the cold weather worth it.

- Spring 2026
Spring brings warmer days and more daylight hours to Scandinavia. Tours begin in Copenhagen with traditional fika coffee breaks before heading north through Sweden's lake country, where melting ice creates perfect conditions for paddling. Our customers really enjoy hiking Bergen's seven mountains once the snow starts to retreat. Spring is excellent for fjord cruises too - the winter melt feeds powerful waterfalls as you cruise through Nærøyfjord and also Geirangerfjord. Many routes include Oslo's Vigeland Sculpture Park when spring flowers fill the surrounding gardens.

- Summer 2026
Summer means endless daylight and ideal conditions for getting outdoors. Routes combine kayaking along Vrango Island's coast with hikes above Bergen using the Fløibanen funicular. Our travelers love those long summer evenings in Stockholm's Gamla Stan, where sunset seems to last forever and outdoor cafes stay lively late into the night. Active summer tours include cycling through Copenhagen's hidden spots, village exploration around Sweden's Lake Siljan and guided walks to Norway's Briksdalsbreen glacier. June through August tours make full use of the midnight sun, especially in the north where daylight runs 24 hours.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Autumn shows off Scandinavia's color changes and cultural sites without the crowds. Stockholm's archipelago really shines in fall, when cozy cafes offer perfect breaks between visits to the Vasa Museum, Royal Palace and other sites. Several routes explore Bergen's UNESCO-listed Bryggen district, where autumn leaves complement the colorful wooden buildings. Our customers particularly enjoy fall visits to Oslo's Viking Ship Museum and Vigeland Park, followed by evenings trying traditional Nordic dishes. With fewer visitors around, there's more space to explore Copenhagen's Nyhavn harbor, Sweden's lake towns and also major attractions.

So How Do You Get Around Norway and Sweden?
Getting between the major cities is actually pretty straightforward. The trains are fantastic especially the Oslo-Bergen route with these incredible mountain views you won't want to miss. There's also a really comfortable overnight train from Stockholm to Oslo if you're trying to save time. Buses are great for traveling on a budget and they go practically everywhere while flights are quick but you'll miss those amazing landscapes below. If you're heading from Copenhagen to Oslo the overnight ferries are really fun with restaurants and even casinos onboard. The Nordic Tour Start Berlin includes one of these ferry crossings and it's a great way to travel.
What Local Traditions Can You Actually Experience?
Sweden's got this wonderful thing called fika it's basically their coffee and pastry tradition but it's so much more than that it's really woven into their social fabric. Head to Alingsås they actually call it the Capital of Fika and you'll find these amazing traditional cafes everywhere. Over in Norway there's nothing quite like visiting a family farm like Øvre-Eide where five generations have worked the land. The Scenic Scandinavia tour lets you have dinner with the family there and it's just such a genuine experience.
Which Natural Wonders Should You Definitely See?
The Norwegian fjords are absolutely incredible places like Nærøyfjord and Sognefjord with these massive cliffs and waterfalls that'll take your breath away. You can see them by boat or drive the scenic routes both are amazing experiences. The Contiki summer tour includes a cruise through Sognefjord and it's spectacular. Up in Swedish Lapland Abisko National Park is another must-visit you can get there by bus and chairlift and the Sami guides take you hiking show you reindeer herding and if you're lucky the Northern Lights.
Can You Do Winter Activities Without Taking a Tour?
You absolutely can! Places like Torgåsgården in Sweden are perfect for independent travelers who want to ski snowboard or try husky sledding. If you're feeling really adventurous head to Swedish Lapland where you can learn proper Arctic survival skills like building shelters and ice fishing. The New Year Adventure tour includes all this plus a really cool reindeer farm visit but you can definitely arrange these activities on your own too.
Where Can You Find Those Hidden Authentic Experiences?
Røros in Norway is this incredible old mining town that's actually a World Heritage Site with all these historic buildings and old miners' houses still standing. The Nordic Tour includes it but you can easily visit independently. Over in Sweden there's this fascinating place called Gammelstad Church Town it's got these beautifully preserved wooden houses that people used to stay in when they came for church services really takes you back in time.
