We just finished a 16-day Spirits of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Excellent and well balanced tour. The 3 star hotels were surprisingly good, situated in good locations, close to tourist objectives. A good mix of local tours and free days. Edna, the Realistic Asia representative was very professional all throughout the 16 days, constantly monitoring our progression. She was very well organized, quick to respond, and really cared about our experience. We even had the opportunity to meet her in person, lovely young lady. Thank you Edna for making everything smooth and stress-free. 100% recommend ! Emilia and Alex, Canada

Best tour companies for Far East tours
Looking at the feedback from our travelers, Intrepid comes out really strong with their cycling tours. Their guide Is Prapassorn gets special mentions - people appreciate how she takes care of everyone and shares deep local knowledge along the way. Bravo Indochina Tours hits the mark too, particularly when it comes to taking care of the details. Their guide Toni stands out for going above and beyond what travelers expect. The whole team seems focused on making sure everything runs smoothly. Hoi An Express offers a mixed picture. While many travelers praise their knowledgeable guides and like the hotels they use, there are some wrinkles to note. A few customers ran into problems with the bus service, and some found the daily plans weren't as clear as they could be. Between these three, each has its strengths. If you're keen on cycling, Intrepid looks solid. For attentive service and careful planning, Bravo Indochina delivers well. Hoi An Express has good bones with their guides and accommodations, though you might want to double-check the transport and daily schedule details before booking.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
You'll find winter tours through Southeast Asia run 18-25 days, with routes weaving through Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and also Laos. The morning alms ceremony in Luang Prabang is a genuine highlight - picture hundreds of monks in saffron robes collecting offerings as the sun rises. Our travelers appreciate how the cooler temperatures make exploring Angkor Wat much more comfortable. The Mekong Delta feels wonderfully peaceful this time of year. Local guides excel at revealing hidden corners of Hanoi's Old Quarter and connecting visitors with families who share authentic home-cooked meals.

- Spring 2026
Spring brings ideal conditions for exploring Southeast Asia's varied landscapes. Tours typically span 21-31 days, giving you proper time to understand each place properly. You'll float past limestone formations in Halong Bay, pedal through Hoi An's rice fields and learn local cooking secrets in Chiang Mai. Our customers love staying with families in rural villages, where they join in making rice paper and help with early morning farming. The guides really shine here - they know their temple architecture at Angkor Wat inside out and also help you discover the best local markets and street food spots.

- Summer 2026
Southeast Asian summer tours blend exploration with smart ways to stay cool, especially during our popular 18-24 day journeys. Early morning temple visits pair naturally with afternoon swims in Kuang Si's refreshing pools near Luang Prabang, while water activities keep you comfortable throughout. Travelers often highlight the kayaking through Halong Bay's limestone caves, and longtail boat rides along Bangkok's peaceful canals. The summer schedule works beautifully with indoor activities during peak heat hours - you'll join cooking classes in Hoi An, picking fresh herbs from local gardens, and participate in traditional craft workshops across Mekong Delta villages. What makes these trips special are the overnight stays in traditional stilt houses by the Mekong, where evening air and family dinners create natural connections with local communities. Small groups of 8-12 travelers allow for flexible timing to dodge the hottest parts of the day, and support vans following cycling routes let you take breaks whenever needed. Wildlife lovers appreciate the elephant sanctuary visits near Mandalao, where shaded forest paths let you walk alongside rescued elephants in their natural setting.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Autumn brings out the best cycling conditions in Southeast Asia, with tours running 12-21 days through Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand when temperatures cool and humidity drops. Our travelers particularly love the gentle 30-50km daily rides along the Mekong Delta's back roads during September through November, passing rice fields and fruit farms with plenty of stops at local workshops and homes. Small groups of 8-12 cyclists mean quality time with guides who know hidden spots along rural routes. The homestays in Mekong Delta villages consistently rank as trip highlights, where families share meals and daily life insights. Morning cyclists catch spectacular sunrises over Angkor Wat's temples, while others appreciate exploring floating markets, navigating bamboo bridges and cycling through fishing villages where locals wave hello. The support vans follow along all routes and our travelers say the basic fitness requirements make these autumn adventures accessible for most people.

Tell me about the cultural experiences I can join in on when visiting - what's out there?
The Far East is packed with amazing ways to dive into local culture. You can learn Muay Thai from real pros during a 90-minute class in Chiang Mai Thailand which is pretty special. Over in Luang Prabang Laos you'll see this beautiful tradition where monks in bright saffron robes collect morning alms while locals share sticky rice for blessings. Bangkok's Chinatown has this incredible temple called Wat Mangkon Kamalawat where you can pray among golden statues and red lanterns. There's also this lovely alms-giving ceremony at Sa Kaeo market in Thailand where you can offer sticky rice to monks and receive their blessing.
What natural areas can I explore outside the cities and how do I get to them?
The Far East's protected areas are absolutely stunning. Khao Yai National Park is just a 90-minute drive from Bangkok and has these amazing cycling routes through the forest that'll take you past the impressive Heaw Narok Waterfall. Vietnam's Lan Ha Bay connects to the UNESCO site Ha Long Bay and you've got thousands of limestone islands best explored by boat or kayak. For incredible snorkeling head to Ang Thong National Marine Park in Thailand - it's got over 40 islands and you can easily get there on day trips from Ko Samui.
What are some different ways to get around that most tourists don't know about?
You'll find some really interesting alternative ways to explore. In Ho Chi Minh City you can hop on these cool cyclos (they're like bicycle carriages) and weave through the backstreets right near the city center seeing local life up close. The Mekong River slow boat is fantastic - you spend two days drifting past rural Laos seeing all these riverside villages. Over in Vietnam's Mekong Delta there's this flat cycling path through Cai Thai village where you can watch local life and see how they make traditional rice paper.
Where can I go that's really special but doesn't get too many tourists?
There are some real hidden gems worth discovering. Nan in Thailand is super peaceful with this beautiful temple Wat Phumin from 1596 that's been lovingly restored. Pong Nam Ron gives you a quieter base for exploring Khao Yai National Park away from the Bangkok crowds. Chambok Village in Cambodia is part of this great community tourism project where you can experience real Khmer village life and visit the beautiful Chambok Waterfall without the usual tourist crowds.
What local foods should I definitely try and where's the best place to find them?
The regional food here is incredible. You've got to try kao soy in Chiang Mai - these yellow noodles in curry broth usually with chicken or beef that's just amazing. In Luang Prabang head to Talad Mued Night Market for Sindad which is this fantastic traditional BBQ with grilled meats and blanched vegetables. When you're in Ho Chi Minh City grab a Saigon cafe sua da (iced coffee with condensed milk) at Ben Thanh Market - it's the perfect pick-me-up while you're exploring.
