Romania is exactly how I thought it would be. A country packed with happy people always eager to help you, very welcoming and with a smile on their faces. Cristi completed the experience in a very professional way, explaining everything about the sites and responding to all of my questions. If you are looking for a tour where you can see the whole country and the differences between Romania's 'eras' you should give these guys a chance. Thanks Cristi, I kept my promise :)

Best tour companies for Romania tours
Looking at Romania's top tour operators, Travel Talk really shines with their Transylvania highlights package - our travelers consistently mention how well-organized everything is and how much they enjoy their guides who really know their stuff. The Explore! tours give you a proper look at rural Romania and even include brown bear watching in their natural habitat, though some folks mention the pace can be pretty quick. But that's actually perfect if you want to see a lot in a shorter time. Active Travel takes a different approach with their Medieval Transylvania tour, and their guide Charlie gets special mentions for going above and beyond. He helps travelers really connect with local culture, which makes the whole experience more meaningful and personal. Rolandia has built quite a reputation for taking care of the details that matter - their drivers know the roads well, the hotels are carefully picked and guides like Cristi and Gelu make the difference. Their 10-day Best of Romania and Classic Romania tours are particularly popular with our customers, and it's easy to see why. The balance of comfort, local expertise and well-planned routes works really well for most travelers.
Best places to start your Romania tour
Most Romania tours kick off from Bucharest - about 82 of our travelers start there. You can begin from Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu or Brasov too, though fewer people choose these starting points. The sweet spot for booking is around 128 days ahead, which gives you about 4 months to lock in your preferred dates and routes. This is especially important if you're traveling in summer when medieval festivals are happening everywhere. Speaking of timing, summer (June-August) works great for hiking and festivals, while spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) mean fewer crowds and perfect weather for castle visits and photos. Winter brings snowy scenes and Christmas markets, but you should know that some mountain roads like Transfagarasan close up for the season. Our customers consistently point out how far their money goes here - you'll get quality experiences and nice places to stay for less than what you'd spend in Western Europe.

Best time to visit Romania
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter tours through Romania show off the country's medieval character in a whole new way. The self-driving UNESCO route fits perfectly with winter conditions, letting you explore snow-covered monasteries in Bucovina and experience traditional Christmas markets in places like Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu and also Brasov. Our 3-day Medieval Transylvania tours adapt nicely to winter - you'll find Bran Castle quieter than usual and see the Black Church against pristine winter scenery. The Carpathian mountains take on a completely different character in winter, offering exceptional photography among the snow-capped peaks. These winter tours blend cultural visits with intimate experiences, so you might start your day walking Sighisoara's medieval streets before warming up in a village workshop learning traditional crafts. Our travelers particularly appreciate how private winter tours allow guides to adjust plans around weather while still covering key sites like Peles Castle and the fortified churches of Biertan, Prejmer and other historic villages.

- Spring 2026
Romania shows its best side in spring, when medieval sites and countryside paths come alive. Our Classic Romania tours hit all the right notes, taking you through Bucharest's mix of old and new before heading into Transylvania's historic towns. The walking routes near Moieciu in the Bucegi Mountains are perfectly balanced - you'll do 6km loops with 300-meter climbs that work up just enough appetite for those hearty Romanian meals waiting at day's end. What makes spring extra special is the chance to spot brown bears fresh from hibernation; our forestry guides know exactly when to take small groups to the observation hides at dusk. You'll find fewer tourists at places like Brasov's Black Church and Sighisoara's Clock Tower, and our local guides are great at adjusting the pace to match what each group wants to see and do.

- Summer 2026
Summer's long daylight hours and festival season make it perfect for diving deep into Romania. The Village Life tours in the Carpathians are a real highlight - you'll trek through Piatra Craiului National Park's limestone gorges and stay in family-run guesthouses in places like Magura and Pestera. The hosts there serve up amazing farm-fresh meals and local cheese tastings that our travelers can't stop talking about. Castle tours work nicely in summer too, though we schedule those visits early to beat the heat. The multi-day hiking programs really shine now, especially the routes through northern Bucegi Natural Park that lead to hidden waterfalls and working shepherd camps. Our guides do a brilliant job mixing proper hikes with relaxed village visits and UNESCO heritage sites, giving you the full Romanian experience.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
When autumn paints Romania's mountains in rich colors, it's prime time for photography-focused trips. You can explore Corvin Castle, Bran Castle and the fortified churches without bumping into summer crowds, which our travelers really appreciate. The Piatra Craiului hikes are still going strong, with perfect temperatures for longer walks to spots like Zarnesti Gorges and Curmatura mountain hut. Our eco-certified tours let you walk through traditional villages and meet local craftspeople and farmers doing their thing. Fall's really special for seeing rural life in action - there's cheese-making happening and fruit brandy production in full swing. You might start your morning hiking through forests turned golden then spend your evening in a village kitchen learning family recipes passed down through generations.

What Traditional Activities Can You Experience in Romania?
You'll find some amazing hands-on cultural experiences in Romania's villages that really let you dive into local life. In Botiza they're known for these beautiful wool carpets and you can actually learn ancient weaving techniques in family workshops - same goes for Malancrav where locals show you their traditional methods. If you're into arts and crafts the egg painting workshops in Sadova are fascinating you'll learn to create intricate Bucovinean patterns and there's even a National Museum of Painted Eggs in Ciocanesti Village. Want to experience real rural Romanian life? Head to villages like Sibiel or Viscri where families welcome you into their homes. You can see how they farm learn to cook traditional dishes and try amazing homemade foods. One of the most charming experiences is taking a horse-drawn carriage ride through Viscri it's such a peaceful way to see the historic architecture and countryside.
What Natural Areas Can You Visit Outside the Cities?
Romania's got some incredible national parks and natural areas that are pretty easy to get to. Piatra Craiului National Park is stunning with these dramatic limestone ridges and gorges plus hiking trails for everyone whether you're a beginner or experienced hiker - you can get there from Brasov. Over in Bucegi Natural Park you'll find all sorts of landscapes and these really cool rock formations. Make sure to check out Shepherd's Peak and the Devil's Mill Waterfall they're accessible from Brasov and Bran. For serious hikers Retezat National Park is perfect with challenging trails and these gorgeous alpine lakes - there's over 80 of them! You can get there from Hațeg town.
What Are the Best Hidden Routes Around Romania?
If you want to get off the beaten path Romania's got some amazing lesser-known routes. The Transrarău Mountain Road in Bucovina gives you these incredible views of the Carpathians and takes you to remote villages with painted monasteries. The famous Transfăgărășan Highway winds through Romania's highest mountains but heads up it's only open July to October. The Maramureș region is really special with its traditional wooden houses UNESCO churches and you've got to see the unique Merry Cemetery in Săpânța. The villages here are great for lunch you can try fresh local food and these amazing fruit liqueurs. Down by the Danube Iron Gates National Park offers dramatic river views ancient Roman ruins and the impressive Iron Gates gorge.
What Local Foods Should You Try in Romania?
Romanian food is seriously good and every region's got its specialties. You've got to try Mititei these tasty minced meat rolls with garlic and spices perfect for a quick lunch especially at places like Dealul Negru they've been making them since the 1800s. In Transylvania look for Virșli traditional sausages with 300 years of history made from sheep and pork meat. For something sweet Papanași are these amazing cheese dumplings with sour cream and jam you can find them everywhere but they're especially good at Casa Vlad Dracul in Sighisoara. If you're in mountain villages like Sibiel try the Shepherd's Dinner it's this hearty meal with polenta cheese and mutton that really hits the spot.
How Do You Get Around Romania?
Getting around Romania's pretty straightforward you've got lots of options. Trains connect all the major cities and the mountain routes are really scenic - check CFR Călători for times. If you're on a Travel Talk tour they often include train rides between Bucharest Brasov and Sighisoara. Buses go pretty much everywhere including smaller towns and villages private companies run most routes. Private transfers are great if you want comfort and convenience they're usually included in organized tours like the Highlights of Transylvania which covers airport pickups too. Renting a car gives you freedom but just know the roads can be tricky especially in the mountains.
