Best tour companies for Eastern Canada tours
Both Intrepid and Globus come up regularly in our travelers' feedback as solid choices for guided tours. Intrepid tends to shine with guides like Simon, who gets lots of positive comments for reading the group well and adjusting plans when needed. The tours run smoothly, and you can tell their guides really know their material without being too rigid about it. Globus takes a slightly different approach - they're known for really detailed itineraries and nicer hotels, plus their guides Scott and Daniel get mentioned often for keeping things organized while still being fun to travel with. They handle those inevitable travel hiccups without missing a beat. One small note about Globus - some of our travelers mention there can be quite a lot of information to take in during the tours. But most people actually appreciate this, saying it helps them understand everything they're seeing and experiencing. If you're the type who likes to really dig into the history and background of places, you'll probably find this a plus rather than a drawback. Both companies consistently deliver what they promise in different ways - Intrepid with their flexible, group-focused approach and Globus with their well-researched, comprehensive style.

Best places to start your Eastern Canada tour
Halifax has become the go-to starting point, with 42 of our travelers kicking off their tours there, while Toronto sees 21 departures, Corner Brook handles 12 starts and Montreal and also Quebec City manage 6 and 5 respectively. Our booking data tells us most people lock in their spots about 148 days ahead - that's roughly 5 months before departure. This early planning really matters for these small-group experiences since spaces tend to fill quickly. Our travelers often tell us they love starting in Halifax - its maritime character, rich history and walkable waterfront help them settle into the Atlantic Canada vibe. We're seeing more people opt for fall departures lately; you still get great whale watching but with beautiful fall colors and noticeably fewer tourists around.

You'll take boat tours from Twillingate, visit Cape Bonavista Lighthouse and explore Gros Morne National Park as nature wakes up. Nova Scotia's spring tours take advantage of quieter streets in Lunenburg, Peggy's Cove and also traditional sugar shacks during peak maple season.

What Makes Eastern Canada So Special?
Eastern Canada's got this amazing mix of city life and natural wonders that you really need to experience. Toronto's our biggest city and it's packed with cool stuff like world-class museums that waterfront area and of course the CN Tower that everyone knows. You can spend hours exploring Casa Loma checking out the Eaton Center or walking through these incredible 25km of underground shopping areas. Montreal's got this European vibe going with those gorgeous cobblestone streets and amazing French-Canadian food you'll want to try everything. Old Montreal's just beautiful and climbing Mount Royal gives you these incredible city views while St. Joseph's Oratory is actually Canada's largest church. Quebec City's really special it's a UNESCO site with those historic walls the charming Old Town and that stunning Fairmont Chateau Frontenac. Don't miss a Ceilidh there it's this super fun Celtic evening with music and dancing. And Niagara Falls? It's just breathtaking especially when you get up close on the Hornblower Niagara Cruise. The Cabot Trail in Cape Breton Nova Scotia's another must-see with dramatic cliffs forests and ocean views that'll blow you away.
What Kind of Local Cultural Experiences Can You Join In?
There's so many ways to dive into Eastern Canada's culture and traditions. Quebec City's got these amazing Ceilidhs where you can really get into the French-Canadian spirit with music and dancing. In St. John's Newfoundland you've got to try the Screech-In ceremony it's this fun local tradition where you take a shot of rum say some words and yes actually kiss a cod! You'll find these happening at local pubs after trying some traditional Jigg's Dinner. For something really special head to the Millbrook Cultural & Heritage Centre in Nova Scotia where local interpreters share fascinating Mi'kmaq history and traditions. Over at Mādahòkì Farm in Ottawa you can experience authentic Pow Wow dancing it's a beautiful way to connect with First Nations culture.
Where Are the Best Natural Areas and How Do You Get There?
Outside the cities Eastern Canada's natural areas are just incredible. Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland is UNESCO listed and seriously amazing with these dramatic fjords huge cliffs and unique geological features. You can hike the Western Brook Pond Trail or take a boat tour for some spectacular views. Then there's Fundy National Park in New Brunswick with these incredible cliffs waterfalls and the world's highest tides you can hike or kayak there depending what you're into. Prince Edward Island National Park's got beautiful beaches sand dunes and that picture-perfect Covehead Lighthouse. Getting around's pretty flexible you can drive take guided tours or use public transport depending on where you're headed and what time of year it is.
How Do You Get Around Eastern Canada?
Getting around Eastern Canada's actually pretty straightforward. VIA Rail connects all the major spots like Toronto Montreal Ottawa and Quebec City and the views from the train are fantastic. Renting a car gives you lots of freedom especially if you're hitting the national parks and coastal areas and carpooling can make it more affordable. The big cities have really good public transport with buses subways and streetcars that'll get you pretty much anywhere you need to go. If you're exploring the coastal areas there's plenty of ferries connecting islands to the mainland just make sure you check the schedules especially in the Maritime provinces.
What Local Food Should You Try and Where Can You Find It?
The food scene in Eastern Canada's incredible and there's some dishes you just can't miss. Poutine's probably the most famous it's this amazing combo of fries cheese curds and gravy you'll find it everywhere from fancy restaurants to street vendors. The Atlantic Lobster's absolutely fantastic especially at those seaside spots in Nova Scotia New Brunswick and PEI. Jigg's Dinner's this really traditional Newfoundland meal with salt beef potatoes and vegetables you'll find it in St. John's pubs and restaurants.
