We booked the 3-night American Getaway for two couples, but upon arrival we were disappointed to find only one room had been booked for all of us to share. This made the first day a bit stressful, as it wasn’t the experience we were expecting. Thankfully, the issue was sorted out the next day and we were provided with two rooms, which made the rest of the trip much more enjoyable. Overall, once the accommodation issue was resolved, the getaway was a nice experience, but I wish the room situation had been correct from the start.

I am seeing some of these reviews here about this trip. Not sure what they are all about. Someone complained about name-tags? What is up with that? We had a great trip! The itinerary was excellent and well organized. The hotels were top-notch and the guide was fine! She could have been a little more engaging, but certainly not a deal breaker. Meals were mostly good. Some could have been better - but food is so subjective. Overall, we saw some really great sites and the leaves were beautiful. The day trip to Martha's Vineyard was changes as there was a hurricane. Not much anyone can do about that. Totally worth it. I highly recommend this trip. Tours of Distinction was so easy to work with.

Best tour companies for East Coast USA tours
Looking at the East Coast tour options, Bamba Experience stands out with their Niagara Falls, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Amish Country package. Our travelers consistently mention how well-organized everything is, from the transport to the daily scheduling. The guides know their stuff too, though it's worth noting some tours mix different language groups which can slow things down a bit. If you're interested in a more intimate experience, Empire Tours has been getting great feedback - especially guide Bruno who manages to make history both interesting and funny according to recent travelers. He's particularly good at mixing in the right amount of humor while keeping the facts straight. For something a bit different, Intrepid's Georgia History Trail to Nashville tour digs deep into the region's past. They're serious about sustainable travel and our customers appreciate that environmental focus. Just keep in mind that adding Nashville makes for some longer travel days since it's quite a distance from the other stops. Globus rounds out the reliable options - they've got the logistics down to a science. Their tours handle all the small details like hotel check-ins, luggage transfers and entrance tickets so you can focus on enjoying the places you're visiting instead of managing the practical stuff.
Popular East Coast USA Cruise Ships
Best places to start your East Coast USA tour
You've got solid choices for where to start your East Coast journey - New York City and Boston each run 23 departures, while Washington DC offers 12 starting points throughout the year. We're seeing folks book around 3.5 months (110 days) ahead, especially for the popular multi-city routes hitting Niagara Falls and Washington DC. Charleston and Asheville work well as alternative kickoff spots with 6 departures each, giving you a fresh take on the region. Our customers love how they can mix up their days between city attractions and natural spaces - maybe catch a Broadway show one day, then walk coastal paths the next. The East Coast works year-round really - from wandering the free Smithsonian museums to exploring Cape Cod's beaches, each season brings something different to the table.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter transforms the East Coast experience, especially up at Niagara Falls where the Cave of the Winds shows off dramatic ice formations. D.C.'s free Smithsonian museums become perfect warm refuges filled with culture and history. The winter route adapts nicely through the Finger Lakes - instead of summer's Watkins Glen State Park, you'll discover the quieter beauty of Montour Falls. Moving south to Philadelphia, you can take your time exploring Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell away from the crowds. What's really special about winter in Lancaster County is seeing authentic Amish life when most tourists have gone home. Our travelers often tell us they love having extra time to dig deep into museums and historical sites during the cooler months.

- Spring 2026
Spring brings D.C.'s famous cherry blossoms, and our travelers time their visits perfectly to see the Jefferson Memorial framed in pink. The routes through Virginia and Pennsylvania show off awakening gardens at Mount Vernon, Monticello and also other historic estates. Gettysburg tours feel different in spring's mild weather - our guides share battle stories while you walk the fields without summer's heat. Over in Colonial Williamsburg, costumed interpreters bring history outside with garden talks and craft demonstrations. What works well in spring is mixing outdoor monuments with indoor museums, so our customers can duck inside when those April showers appear.

Summer opens everything up - from May through October you can get really close to Niagara Falls on the Maid of the Mist, feeling the spray off Horseshoe Falls. Long summer days mean more time in each city, starting with morning walks through Philadelphia's history and ending with D.C.'s monuments lit up at night. Some routes add in Watkins Glen State Park, where you can walk through gorges shaped by ancient glaciers. Our travelers really enjoy how summer mixes active outdoor exploring like Boston's Freedom Trail with cool breaks in museums, historic sites and also air-conditioned attractions.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall colors transform the East Coast routes, especially driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains between Charleston and Asheville. Around the Finger Lakes, you'll catch vineyards during harvest while fall colors reflect in Seneca Lake. The comfortable temperatures make city exploring much nicer - whether you're walking Philadelphia's historic district or Georgetown's old cobblestone streets. Many routes include drives through Shenandoah National Park right when the leaves change color. Our customers tell us autumn hits the sweet spot - perfect weather for experiencing both natural beauty and urban culture without the summer crowds.

How Do You Get Around the East Coast Without a Car?
Trains are actually your best bet here - Amtrak connects all the major cities like New York Philly DC and Boston with some really scenic routes. If you're looking to hit multiple cities coach tours work great because they handle all the transportation plus you get guided sightseeing thrown in. The Great Eastern Cities tour is particularly good taking you through New York City Watkins Glen Niagara Falls Gettysburg DC and Philadelphia. Once you're in the cities themselves you'll find the subways and buses super convenient and budget-friendly.
What Cities Should I See If I'm Short on Time?
You'll want to focus on the big three: New York City Washington DC and Philadelphia. These cities pack in everything from iconic skylines to historic landmarks and amazing cultural spots. You can explore Manhattan's incredible views check out DC's monuments and walk through Philadelphia's historic district. There's this great 4-day tour from New York that covers Niagara Falls DC Philadelphia and even Amish Country if you're really trying to maximize your time.
What Local Experiences Shouldn't I Miss?
You've got to try the Pennsylvania Dutch dinner in Lancaster - it's family-style and you'll learn so much about Amish life while you're there. Over in Hyannis Massachusetts locals have been going to Hearth 'n Kettle since '73 for authentic New England seafood. The food markets are amazing too - Reading Terminal in Philly and Chelsea Market in New York are where you'll find real local flavors. The Cape Cod & Islands tour actually includes both a regional seafood dinner and that Chelsea Market visit.
When's the Best Time to See New England's Fall Colors?
Late September through mid-October is when everything really pops with color. Our customers absolutely love the Franconia Notch Mountain pass in New Hampshire and this scenic route called The Kanc - both are absolutely stunning during peak season. There's a 10-day Fall Colours of New England tour that times everything perfectly and takes you along both these routes when the colors are at their best.
What Makes Niagara Falls So Special?
It's honestly mind-blowing - highest flow rate in North America dropping more than 160 feet. You've got to take the Maid of the Mist boat tour if you're there May through October or check out the Cave of the Winds in winter. The views are incredible from both the US and Canadian sides you can see both the American and Horseshoe Falls. That 4-day tour from New York I mentioned includes a night tour of the falls plus you can add on the Maid of the Mist if you want the full experience.
