September and October hit that perfect balance of good weather and cultural exploring. Many routes start with Athens' classical sites before heading north to Meteora and east to Istanbul. Fall temperatures make it comfortable to explore Turkey's highlights - Ephesus, Pamukkale's white terraces and also Cappadocia's remarkable valleys. Several tours include Rhodes' medieval quarter and Crete's ancient sites when crowds are thinner but the water's still warm enough for swimming. The Bulgaria and Romania segments are especially nice in autumn with Rila Monastery and Bucharest's old center surrounded by fall colors.

Our winter routes begin in Athens with proper Acropolis visits before heading up to Meteora's mountain monasteries - photographers love the winter light here.
