Overall, the tour met my expectations, and the tour company was very good in responding to my messages. The driver, Maru, was prompt in picking me up from the airport and dropping me off for my return flight. He was an excellent driver, but due to his limited English language skills, he could not give me detailed information about Madagascar's history, culture, politics, and people, and so we spent long drives quietly. The city tour of Antsirabe, and Lemur sighting in the Anja Valley and Ranomofana National Park were good. Out of the 3 hotels I stayed on this tour, the Anja Valley Lodge and Hotel Thermal at Ranomofana National Park were very good. Those two hotels had A/C and the food was very good. The Royal Palace Hotel in Antsirabe, where I stayed 2 nights did not have A/C and the food was mediocre at best. If I had a choice, I would not stay at this hotel again. I was aware of the poor road conditions in Madagascar (which neither the tour company nor the driver had any control over), but I am a seasoned traveler and I was able to manage the long and slow drives through pothole-filled roads and other travelers must be aware of this and not be surprised. Overall, I had a good tour and have already recommended it to many of my friends.

The tour with Intrepid was outstanding and Madagascar is a beautiful country. It is noted elsewhere that the car journeys are long due to the poor conditions of the roads so don't be surprised by that. Roads aside, the sights on the tour are like nowhere else on the planet. The tour itself was made by our tour guide Patrick, who deserves the highest praise from Intrepid - his ability to lead the tour and take the time to answer every question thrown at him was well appreciated. Lastly, the experience has encouraged us to return to the country again one day. Many thanks Patrick and Intrepid. Additional note - do not expect 5 star luxury on the trip, the trip is designed to get a more authentic experience of Madagascar culture.

Best tour companies for Madagascar tours
These travel companies each offer distinct Madagascar experiences, with some interesting patterns in the feedback. HT Agency Tours gets good marks for how they organize their "Lemurs and Baobabs" route and their staff's flexibility with changes. G Adventures has built a solid reputation through guides like Solofo and Coco who really know their stuff on the "Highlights of Madagascar" tour, though you should note that actual travel times sometimes run longer than what's listed. The "Madagascar Baobabs & Beyond" tour from Intrepid Travel benefits from experienced guides Patrick and Branabus, but like other operators, they face the reality of Madagascar's challenging roads which can stretch out travel times. If you're considering any of these tours, it's worth planning for some flexibility in the schedule since Madagascar's infrastructure often means spending more time on the road than expected.
Best places to start your Madagascar tour
Most folks kick off their Madagascar journey from Antananarivo, the capital city - it makes sense since over 90% of our tours start here thanks to good connections to all the key areas. While you can start from places like Nosy Be or Toliara on the coast, the capital just works better as a jumping-off point. Madagascar's really caught on as a wildlife destination lately, so we suggest booking about 95 days ahead, especially if you're looking at traveling during the popular dry months from April through October. This gives you access to the best wildlife routes and also experienced local guides. The sweet spot for wildlife watching falls between April and November when the weather plays nice and the animals are out and about. Our travelers really value having local guides who know exactly where to spot well-hidden chameleons, track lemur groups and explain what makes Madagascar's wildlife so incredibly unique.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Madagascar's winter tours combine rich wildlife encounters and cultural discoveries that set them apart in our booking data. The comprehensive 14-day journey starts with Indri lemur tracking through Andasibe's eastern rainforests, moves inland to find golden bamboo lemurs in misty Ranomafana valleys, and finishes at the Avenue of Baobabs for remarkable sunset photography. Our guests often mention how guides maximize winter wildlife spotting, knowing the perfect times to find nocturnal creatures like mouse lemurs, leaf-tailed geckos and other secretive species. The 10-day western circuit blends time at Kirindy forest, where you'll spot unusual giant jumping rats and fossa, with laid-back river travel down the Tsiribihina, sleeping on peaceful sandbanks near riverside communities. Winter provides photographers with excellent clear conditions, perfect for capturing everything from tiny chameleons to towering ancient baobabs. The guides earn consistent praise for weaving together wildlife experiences with authentic cultural moments, taking time in Ambositra to observe traditional silk weaving and sharing knowledge of medicinal forest plants during nature walks.

- Spring 2026
Madagascar's spring routes have our travelers buzzing about a few standout combinations. The tours linking Andasibe's rainforests with the Tsingy formations are particularly excellent, with guides like Solofo and Patrick leading wildlife walks to spot golden bamboo lemurs at their most active. Eastern rainforest circuits shine in spring, where you'll join dawn treks to find Indri lemurs calling through misty canopies, and spend afternoons learning local woodcarving techniques in Ambositra. The western paths through Kirindy Forest to the Avenue of Baobabs work perfectly this season, blending wildlife tracking, river explorations and cultural encounters. Our guests appreciate how these seasonal tours adapt to their interests, from extra photography time with rare aye-aye lemurs at Palmarium Reserve, joining village music sessions along the Tsiribihina River or diving into local traditions. Tours connecting Ranomafana's lush valleys with Isalo's dramatic canyons are among our most requested, offering a mix of wildlife spotting, tree planting initiatives and also visits to traditional silk workshops.

- Summer 2026
Madagascar opens up beautifully in summer with tours that make the most of the good weather. Our main routes blend three different experiences - you'll begin in Andasibe's eastern rainforests looking for Indri lemurs, move south into Ranomafana's valley systems and finally head west to catch the sun setting behind the Baobab trees. What makes these trips work so well is how they combine wildlife watching with local culture - your day might start tracking golden bamboo lemurs and end learning traditional woodcarving techniques in Ambositra. The Tsiribihina river tours really shine in summer too; you can camp right on the sandbars and often join nearby villages for their evening music and traditional dancing.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Autumn creates perfect conditions for exploring Madagascar's wildlife routes, especially when combining the Tsingy rock formations with the coastal regions. Our 10-14 day circuits from Antananarivo westward let you experience how the landscape changes day by day. Morning walks through Andasibe-Mantadia often bring you close to Indri families, while afternoons at the Palmarium Reserve give you a shot at spotting the rare Aye-Aye. These autumn routes work well because they mix up the activity levels - one morning you're climbing through limestone formations, then that afternoon you're drifting along the Manambolo River in a local pirogue boat. Our travelers tell us the night walks are particularly good this season; you'll often spot mouse lemurs, chameleons in various colors and birds that only come out after dark.

What our customers ask about Madagascar Tours & Trips
Why Is Madagascar Different From Regular African Safaris?
You know what's incredible about Madagascar? Around 80% of the wildlife here exists nowhere else on Earth which really sets it apart from mainland Africa. While you've got amazing animals in places like Kenya or Tanzania Madagascar's been doing its own thing for so long it's created some truly unique creatures. Take the Indri lemur for example - it's the biggest lemur alive today and you can only find these amazing creatures in places like Andasibe-Mantadia National Park just hanging out in the rainforest canopy.
Which Parks Should You Definitely Visit Your First Time?
You'll want to start with Andasibe-Mantadia National Park it's fantastic for spotting those Indri lemurs I mentioned and the rainforest there is just incredible. Isalo National Park looks like something from Jurassic Park with these amazing sandstone formations and canyons while Tsingy de Bemaraha is honestly mind-blowing with its razor-sharp limestone peaks. Don't miss Ranomafana National Park either - that's where you might spot the rare Golden Bamboo Lemur plus tons of other lemur species like the ring-tailed lemur red-fronted lemur and those dancing sifakas.
How Can You Get Around Madagascar Besides Taking Tours?
Getting around Madagascar independently is definitely possible though it can be challenging. You've got domestic flights between the major cities which saves tons of time compared to driving and if you're feeling adventurous you can hire a 4x4 with a driver to explore off-grid areas. The roads can be pretty rough though so you really need high-clearance vehicles and drivers who know what they're doing. There's this really scenic train journey along the Fianarantsoa-Côte Est railway and you can even take river trips on traditional barges down the Tsiribihina River like our 10-day "Madagascar Baobabs & Beyond" tour does.
