10 days Galapogas Island hopping is the perfect ? ? adventure. 3 days on each island gives one enough time to experience all that the islands have to offer. The guides were very punctual, with a very smooth transmission from island to island. Romero on Santa Cruz was an excellent guide . Any questions or concerns were rapidly answered by Valentina. I have been to more than few countries and this is the first time I have experienced such a dedication and excellent customer service by a representative. Valentina is definitely one of the kind, thank you ?.

While the initial itinerary was most misleading, the factual itinerary was acceptable.

The itinerary was great. Most of the guides were good. But if things get messed up (our flight off the islands was cancelled) GUIDEcuador will leave you hanging. They were unresponsive and didn’t help at all. So if everything goes off as planned you are fine but if not…

Best tour companies for Ecuador tours
Looking at the recent feedback from our travelers, Intrepid comes out particularly strong with their Ecuador tours. They've got their logistics sorted well - the itineraries make sense, run smoothly and you get solid value for what you pay. What really stands out though are their guides, who know their stuff about local wildlife and environmental protection. Adventure Journeys also gets lots of positive mentions from travelers coming back from Ecuador. The places they pick to stay have real character, and they're doing the food right - you'll get proper Ecuadorian dishes throughout. Their guide David keeps getting special mentions in reviews; he's one of those guides who helps you really understand local life rather than just ticking off tourist spots. G Adventures is having a bit of a rougher time lately. When political issues came up in Ecuador, some of our travelers ran into problems. The buses weren't always on schedule, there were some hiccups with hotels and getting clear updates was tricky at times. It's an area where they could definitely step up their game. I should note these experiences are mainly from 2023, which was a bit of an unusual year for Ecuador with the political situation. Still, it shows which companies handled the challenges better than others.
Best places to start your Ecuador tour
Most people (about 72% of our travelers) kick off their Ecuador experience in Quito, while others fly directly to Baltra Island or San Cristóbal for Galapagos-focused trips. You'll want to book roughly 3.7 months ahead - that's about 112 days before you plan to travel. This timing really matters for Galapagos tours since boats have strict capacity limits and permits are carefully controlled to protect the environment. It's smart to spend 2-3 days in Quito first - not just for altitude adjustment but also to explore the local markets, cultural sites and authentic food scene. If you're planning to explore the Andes region, June through September typically offers the clearest skies for hiking and mountain views.

- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter brings out the best of the Galapagos from December through May with warmer seas and great visibility. Our multi-island tours let you snorkel at Kicker Rock where hammerhead sharks glide by in the clear waters. You'll spot nesting frigates, swim with curious sea lions and also watch blue-footed boobies hunting for fish. The volcanic walks take you through lava tunnels and up Sierra Negra, which happens to be the world's second largest volcanic crater. When you stay island-based, there's time to kayak Las Tintoreras, see giant tortoises roaming their highland homes and also visit the Charles Darwin Research Station.

Summer tours blend physical challenges with local culture across Ecuador's regions. You start in the Andes at South America's biggest indigenous market in Otavalo before heading to the deep blue Quilotoa crater lake. The path winds through Baos where you'll cycle past waterfalls, try the "End of the World" swing and soak in hot springs. In the Amazon, you'll tackle white-water rapids on the Jatunyacu River, look for night creatures on jungle walks and learn traditional plant medicine from indigenous guides. Our travelers tell us they love how these routes mix hiking, cycling and also cultural experiences all in one trip.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Autumn works well for exploring high mountains and coastal areas both. Active tours combine horse rides near snowy volcanoes, downhill biking on jungle paths and kayaking in wildlife spots. You'll visit artists' workshops in the Andes, learn chocolate making from local experts and spot countless birds in misty forests. Our guests often mention how they love the variety - hiking volcanic trails one day, swimming with sea turtles the next and also learning at wildlife breeding centers.

What's the Best Way to Experience Ecuador's Natural Wonders?
Ecuador's packed with incredible natural areas you really should explore. The Galapagos Islands are just breathtaking and you'll need to fly there from the mainland. Cotopaxi National Park is amazing with its active volcano you can get there by private transfer or join a tour and go horseback riding or hiking around the beautiful Limpiopungo glacial lagoon. Mindo Cloud Forest is a dream for bird lovers especially if you're into hummingbirds catch a bus or arrange a transfer to get there. For the Amazon experience you'll fly into Coca then take a motorized canoe ride to amazing spots like the Kuyana Amazon Lodge.
Where Are Ecuador's Hidden Gems?
There are some incredible spots that don't get as much attention as they should. Quilotoa Lagoon's this stunning turquoise crater lake with amazing views and hiking trails usually way less crowded than Cotopaxi. The little town of Chugchilán along the Quilotoa Loop gives you this authentic cultural experience with gorgeous mountain backdrops. Ingapirca's got Ecuador's biggest Inca ruins really fascinating history there. And if you're heading to the Galapagos check out Isla Floreana it's got these mysterious historical stories plus beautiful black sand beaches without the usual crowds.
