Best time to visit France and Italy
- Winter 2025 / 2026
When winter arrives, our guests find it's actually a fantastic time to discover France and Italy without the usual tourist crowds. The Paris to Rome route through Switzerland has become a customer favorite, where you'll warm up indoors watching Venetian glassblowers craft delicate pieces and Swiss chocolatiers share their techniques. Another popular option starts with Paris explorations, including Seine river cruises and fast-track entry at major sites, before winding south through Italian lake country and finally Rome. Our travelers tell us they love how these winter tours mix cultural immersion, like hands-on Roman cooking classes and perfume workshops on the French Riviera, with plenty of indoor activities when the weather turns cold. For those wanting to see it all, the Amsterdam to Rome journey lets you watch traditional woodcarving in the Black Forest, admire Venetian artisans at work and experience authentic local culture. We've chosen central hotels that put you steps from museums and galleries, while evening meals at carefully selected local restaurants give everyone a chance to gather and share stories from their day.

- Spring 2026
Spring brings ideal conditions for exploring France and Italy - you'll find pleasant temperatures and fewer people at major attractions. The popular 12-day Rome to London route lets you watch Venetian artisans work with molten glass and wander through the warm-toned streets of Siena. There's also a fantastic Paris to Italy option that takes you through Switzerland, where our guests love seeing Lucerne's Chapel Bridge decorated with spring flowers before heading to the Italian lakes. Photography fans often choose our Provence tours in April and May - you'll catch the early lavender blooms while exploring the Roman sites in Arles and taking a relaxing boat trip to Saint-Tropez. Many first-time visitors opt for the comprehensive Amsterdam to Rome journey, which combines cultural experiences like Black Forest crafts and Venetian glassmaking with plenty of time to explore on your own.

- Summer 2026
Long summer days mean more time for evening walks through Florence and outdoor dining in Rome's Trastevere district. The Barcelona to Rome route is especially popular in summer - our travelers tell us they appreciate how it balances guided tours with independent time. You'll ride a scenic cogwheel train through the Pyrenees and discover the landscapes that inspired Van Gogh in Arles. Another great summer choice follows the Mediterranean from Nice to Rome, including walks through the Cinque Terre and hands-on Italian cooking classes. Families particularly enjoy our Paris-to-Rome summer tour, which includes pizza making in Rome and dinner in an authentic 12th-century Tuscan castle that really captures kids' imagination.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall tours catch Burgundy's vineyards in their autumn colors with perfect temperatures for exploring. Many guests choose our Rome-based route that winds through Tuscany during grape harvest season before heading to French wine country. The itinerary includes stops at medieval towns like Monteriggioni and San Gimignano en route to Florence. Another excellent autumn option takes you from Barcelona through southern France - you'll explore Carcassonne's medieval fortress and follow Van Gogh's path through Provence without the summer crowds. Our London-to-Rome journey works particularly well in fall; customers appreciate how the mild weather makes it comfortable to explore Vatican City and Florence's art collections. Food enthusiasts can join truffle hunts in Tuscany and experience wine harvests in Burgundy alongside the usual cultural sites.

How do you get around France and Italy easily?
Taking the train is really the way to go between major cities - you've got France's TGV and Italy's Frecciarossa that'll zip you between places like Paris Milan Rome and Florence. Paris to Milan takes about 7 hours which isn't bad at all considering the views you get. Flying works too if you're pressed for time or covering longer distances. Once you're in the cities public transport is super convenient especially the Paris Metro with its 16 lines and over 300 stations that'll get you pretty much anywhere you need to go.
What local food should you try and where's the best place to get it?
You'll want to dive into some boeuf bourguignon right in Burgundy where it comes from or grab some amazing bouillabaisse in Marseille by the coast. For the real deal head to traditional bistros and brasseries in France or search out authentic trattorias and osterias in Italy. There's this great place in Rome called Osteria Barberini where their cacio e pepe is just incredible. If you're in Naples you absolutely have to try the margherita pizza at L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele it's basically a pizza institution. And don't miss the risotto alla Milanese when you're up in Milan.
What local experiences can visitors join in on?
You can really immerse yourself in some amazing experiences like learning to create perfume on the French Riviera or joining wine tastings in Bordeaux and Burgundy. Our London to Rome tour guests love doing proper French countryside picnics it's such a nice way to slow down and enjoy the moment. Over in Italy you can learn pizza-making at That's Amore Pizza School in Rome paint your own mask in Venice or take that classic gondola ride through the canals it's touristy sure but still pretty special.
Which hidden gems should you check out?
The medieval city of Carcassonne in France is incredible with these amazing fortifications and while it gets about 3 million visitors yearly it's still less crowded than major spots. It's actually a UNESCO site too. In Italy there's this lovely town called Orvieto in Umbria that you reach by cable car which is pretty cool. If you're on our Barcelona to Rome trip you'll get to ride this neat cogwheel train from Ribes de Freser up to the Nuria Valley in the Spanish Pyrenees it's one of those experiences our travelers always remember.
What nature spots can you visit outside the cities?
The French Alps are absolutely stunning especially around Mont Blanc which towers up to 4808 meters. There are all these great trails and cable cars to help you explore. Over in Italy the Cinque Terre National Park is just gorgeous it's UNESCO listed and you can hop between five beautiful villages either hiking the coastal paths or taking the train. It's really well set up for visitors and the views are just incredible.
