I joined this tour solo and it was spectacular! Top notch company with amazing customer service and expert guides. I added the Death Valley day tour to my 3 day tour and it was equally fantastic. Our tour was full at 13 guests, we all got along so great. The eatery was great, information from our guide was the best (we were well educated on the areas we visited) and the guide provided a perfect amount of quiet tie to enjoy the drives. The vehicle was new, modern, spacious and comfortable. The hotels were exceptional. Overall an amazing experience. Highly recommend!

Best tour companies for Western USA tours
Looking at these tour operators, Bindlestiff Tours stands out with their guide Khriss, who our travelers consistently mention for going above and beyond - he's organized, knows his stuff and adds those personal touches that make a trip memorable.Brush Buck has some really capable guides too, particularly Mike and Daniel who have an impressive talent for finding wildlife in Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Their vehicle situation needs work though, and some customers have had trouble getting clear info from them before trips. For the Sedona area, Bamba Experience's 3-day tour is a bit hit or miss. While the hotels are good and some groups have smooth, well-organized trips, others tell us the guides weren't as knowledgeable as expected and that some advertised activities didn't match what was actually offered on the ground.Between these options, I'd lean toward Bindlestiff Tours if you want reliability and excellent guiding, or Brush Buck if wildlife spotting is your priority and you don't mind working around some communication gaps. Just keep in mind with Brush Buck you might end up in one of their older vehicles.

Best time to visit Western USA
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter in the American West is fantastic for desert exploration and California coastal tours. Multi-day trips from Las Vegas wind through Valley of Fire, Monument Valley and also Antelope Canyon, where winter's low sun angles create ideal lighting in the slot canyons. Our travelers often tell us how much they learn from Navajo guides during jeep tours through the red rocks - there's so much cultural history here. Along California's coast, we swap the usual Yosemite segment for time in Monterey's Cannery Row, Carmel's art galleries and drives along Pacific Coast Highway, where winter storms put on quite a show. The mild temperatures make Death Valley hikes comfortable, and you'll see Joshua Tree's desert plants without the intense heat.

- Spring 2026
Spring opens prime wildlife watching in Yellowstone and Grand Teton on our 4-day tours. You'll catch bears just out of hibernation, newborn bison calves and lots of returning birds. Our guides know exactly where to position groups in Lamar Valley, Hayden Valley and other prime spots for photos. Down in Utah's red rock country, spring brings perfect hiking weather for exploring Bryce Canyon's rock formations and Zion's riverside paths. The spring melt makes this the ideal time to wade through the Narrows, while desert wildflowers add unexpected color splashes across the landscape.

- Summer 2026
Summer's long daylight hours let us pack in more activities, especially in Alaska. We use the midnight sun for evening wildlife cruises in Kenai Fjords and extended exploration time in Denali. You'll visit working musk ox farms and meet actual Iditarod champions - it's very hands-on. California tours can mix coastal and mountain experiences; many start at Santa Barbara's missions before heading to Yosemite's waterfalls and granite formations. In Utah, we beat the heat by hiking early mornings and evenings through all five national parks.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall brings incredible changes to Western landscapes. Utah hiking gets even better as riverside cottonwoods turn golden and temperatures drop to perfect levels for tackling the challenging trails in Canyonlands, Arches and other parks. The wildlife watching stays excellent - Yellowstone's elk start their rut, bears prep for winter and migrating birds pass through. Our travelers love how the low autumn sun really brings out the colors in Sedona's rocks and Monument Valley's towers. The stable weather works well for camping trips, and our customers say nothing beats stargazing in clear desert skies from their campsite.

What routes do most people take to see the major national parks out West?
If you're planning a Western parks adventure, the Grand Circle is your best bet. It takes you through Utah's incredible Mighty 5 parks where you'll experience Zion's stunning Narrows and Angel's Landing, wander Bryce's Queen's Garden Trail, check out Capitol Reef's Hickman Bridge and see the famous Delicate Arch in Arches and Island in the Sky in Canyonlands. You'll also hit the Grand Canyon's South Rim and Las Vegas. The weather's perfect for hiking in spring and fall running about 60-75°F. Most people take 7-14 days and if you're looking at organized trips TourRadar's popular tours combine Yosemite's Half Dome and Glacier Point either with the Grand Circle or the gorgeous Big Sur section of the Pacific Coast Highway.
What natural areas can I visit away from the cities and how do I get to them?
Beyond the big national parks there's so much to explore. You can take Monument Valley's 17-mile scenic drive or join Navajo-led jeep tours to see where all those classic Western movies were filmed. If you're up for a challenge head to Alaska between July and September for the tough but rewarding 8.2-mile Harding Icefield Trail in Kenai Fjords with amazing glacier views. Want to go below sea level? Drive Highway 190 to Death Valley's Badwater Basin sitting at 282 feet below sea level and catch incredible wildflower blooms in March. Joshua Tree's another must-see where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet great wildlife spotting around Hidden Valley and Skull Rock.
What are some less crowded routes people love taking out West?
You'll love Utah's Highway 12 Scenic Byway it runs 124 miles connecting Bryce Canyon to Capitol Reef through Grand Staircase-Escalante's incredible red rocks with a great stop at Kodachrome Basin State Park. Up in Glacier the Going-to-the-Sun Road spans 50 miles perfect for spotting wildlife and hiking to Hidden Lake Overlook. The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway through Wyoming's Bighorns gives you views of 20 peaks over 12000 feet plus you'll see the historic Sunlight Creek Bridge and lots of bighorn sheep along the way.
How do most people get around on Western tours and what works best?
RVing gives you the freedom to boondock on BLM lands and national forest campgrounds plus you've got hookup options at developed sites. Rental cars work great for scenic drives like California's Highway 1 though you'll need 4WD if you're hitting backcountry roads in places like Canyonlands or Death Valley. If you're looking to hike The Wave or Antelope Canyon guided bus tours handle all those tricky permits. In Alaska the railroad's glass-domed cars are amazing for wildlife watching between Anchorage and Fairbanks with stops at Denali.
Where can I find amazing places out West that aren't packed with tourists?
Want to dodge the crowds? Check out Kodachrome Basin State Park it gets just 100000 visitors compared to Bryce Canyon's 2 million but has similar gorgeous sandstone formations and incredible stargazing. There's Wall Drug in South Dakota still keeping up their free ice water tradition since 1936 with cool Western art collections. The Musk Ox Farm in Palmer Alaska is really unique they're preserving sustainable qiviut production and teaching visitors about prehistoric megafauna. These spots give you authentic Western experiences without fighting the crowds you'd find at bigger parks.
