What people love about touring Western USA solo
- Yellowstone & Rocky Mountain Explorer
A wonderful trip, full of variety and interest. The National Parks were all beautiful, well maintained and a credit to the Parks Service. The Grand Tetons Park was a happy surprise. I hadn’t heard of this park before this trip and it was just spectacular. Our guide, Chris, was so good humoured, accommodating and went out of his way to make sure everyone was having a good time. Will definitely recommend this trip to everyone I know
- 7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour
Just back from a fab 7 day camping tour of the big 5 national parks. The tour is well planned, taking in the amazing natural wonders. Got some good hikes in. Some upto about 3 miles, others shorter. But no pressure for anyone in the group to do more than we felt comfortable with. 9 of us on the tour from age 38+. 2 UK, 3 Australians, 4 USA, a fun crowd. We chose to camp, the other 7 chose hotel accommodation. The camping was great fun & closer to nature!! And our tour guide & driver Joe was brilliant! Informative, fun, a fabulous chef, prepping great lunches and campfire breakfasts for those of us camping. Always happy to try to fulfil any requests on route and sharing great tips to get the best out of each park visit. For anyone looking to visit national parks in the USA remember there are the new park fees/pass fees. Thankyou for an unforgettable trip, definitely one we would recommend.
- National Parks Tour 3 Days Small Group Camping Tour from Las Vegas
The whole trip was wonderful! Accommodations were clean and comfortable, but the locations were outstanding. Every time you thought it couldn't get better...IT DID. Our Guide Craig, was attentive and kept our safety and comfort, his priority. Every day way a brand new adventure. The sights and views were like they came out of a picture book. Lots and Lots of pictures were taken. So pleased with the whole adventure! Would consider doing it all again!
What our customers ask about Western USA Tours for Solo Travelers
How easy is it to meet other travelers as a solo participant on Western USA tours?
More than half of Western USA tour bookings come from solo travelers making it easy to connect with like-minded people. The tours create natural opportunities to socialize through shared activities from group dinners at local spots like Rustler's Rooste in Phoenix to hiking together in Yosemite or enjoying evening shows in Las Vegas. As one traveler put it: "Made more and better friends in 2 weeks on this trip than I have in the last 2-3 years of my life. There is no one I wouldn't be stoked about meeting again."
What type of accommodation can solo travelers expect on Western USA tours?
You'll stay in a mix of hotels and campgrounds depending on your tour. Some tours like G Adventures' "Wild Western USA" split the stays between 6 nights camping and 3 nights in hotels. Hotel options range from the Brandin' Iron Inn in West Yellowstone to camping experiences in Zion National Park. Solo travelers usually share rooms or tents with another same-gender traveler unless they choose to pay extra for private accommodation. The camping portions often lead to friendships through shared meals and evenings around the campfire.
Which areas of Western USA are most solo traveler-friendly?
Major cities like Las Vegas and San Francisco along with national parks such as Yosemite and Grand Canyon work well for solo travel. These places combine organized activities safe environments and chances to meet others. The Grand Canyon offers ranger-led hikes and talks while cities provide hostel stays and social meetups. A recent traveler noted: "Las Vegas was incredibly solo-friendly - between the organized Strip tours and group activities it was easy to meet people and never feel alone."
What should solo travelers pack for a Western USA tour?
Pack clothes that work for different weather conditions. You'll need sturdy hiking boots for places like Bryce Canyon layers for temperature swings between Death Valley and Yosemite's highlands and a reliable daypack. If your tour includes camping bring a sleeping bag and pillow. Hotels like the Grand Vista in Grand Junction provide standard amenities but the outdoor portions require specific gear.
How are meals typically handled for solo travelers on Western USA tours?
Tours usually cover some meals especially breakfast. Many offer optional group meal plans like Intrepid's "Vegas to San Fran" tour which suggests a $20 daily food kitty for shared meals. You'll find picnic lunches during national park visits and group dinners at places like the Flying Saddle Resort in Alpine. These shared meals often become key social moments where solo travelers bond with their group.
