Overall we enjoyed the 12 day tour of Turkey. Communication with the company (Zerrin) was always good and very responsive to our questions as we toured around. We chose the tour as it gave us an extra day in Kusadasi and Antalya which we appreciated, given that our flights between the towns were always in the evenings. The tour itinerary included a trip to Santos Island which did not take place, as the ferry service was no longer running. However we did enjoy a day to ourselves and wander around the town of Kusadasi and have lunch with the locals away from the tourist area. The hotels were mixed in quality, the hotel in Istanbul was very good, and also in Kusadasi (although the latter had a very poor breakfast buffet). The hotel in Antalya was most unsatisfactory, we arrived after midnight to find our room was above the Irish bar that was still playing load music until past 1am. It is also located far from the old town with few amenities close by. We had to switch hotels for the next two nights as it was not possible to stay there any longer. We appreciated that Zerrin was able to make alternative arrangements. The provided lunches were fine, sometimes at a large tourist oriented buffet, which as we travelled in off peak season were quite pleasant and had advantage of a large selection of choices. We enjoyed meeting up with different people at each location, as we all seemed to be on slightly different schedules and itineraries. The guides were generally helpful and informative. Although in Cappadocia we did feel that we were rushed through some sites, and the group of us on that tour had to push back and say no, we have to have more time. But overall the tour was a great experience and very well organized with flights, tours and transfers all arranged and all on time.

Best time to visit Greece and Turkey
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter in Greece and Turkey means fewer tourists at the major sites, which really changes how you experience them. Our winter routes begin in Athens with proper Acropolis visits before heading up to Meteora's mountain monasteries - photographers love the winter light here. Several full tours go on to Rhodes and Heraklion where you'll explore the Palace of Knossos. From November through April, we swap beach time for cultural stops like the carved caves of Matala. The Istanbul segments are particularly nice in winter, especially around the Spice Bazaar and Topkapi Palace. The Bosphorus boats run year-round giving you clear winter views of both European and Asian shores.

- Spring 2026
April and May bring perfect conditions for exploring Greece and Turkey together. The temperatures are just right for walking through Ephesus' ancient ruins and climbing up the Acropolis in Athens. Our Cappadocia guides get great feedback from travelers for their deep knowledge of the underground cities and rock churches. Spring routes through Bulgaria and Romania add something special - you'll see Rila Monastery and Transylvania's castles with wildflowers all around. Many well-planned spring tours finish in Istanbul where you can explore the mosques and bazaars without summer's heavy crowds.

- Summer 2026
Summer tours focus heavily on the islands while mixing in mainland history. The routes combine classic sites with extended stays in Rhodes, Santorini and also Mykonos. Our local guides lead morning visits to ancient sites, leaving afternoons free for island exploring or beach time. In Turkey, summer visitors often take early balloon flights over Cappadocia's unique landscape. Several routes use overnight ferries between Athens and Rhodes with basic cabin rooms - our travelers often suggest booking cabin upgrades for more comfort. The Balkan segments are carefully timed to avoid the hottest hours at archaeological sites.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
September and October hit that perfect balance of good weather and cultural exploring. Many routes start with Athens' classical sites before heading north to Meteora and east to Istanbul. Fall temperatures make it comfortable to explore Turkey's highlights - Ephesus, Pamukkale's white terraces and also Cappadocia's remarkable valleys. Several tours include Rhodes' medieval quarter and Crete's ancient sites when crowds are thinner but the water's still warm enough for swimming. The Bulgaria and Romania segments are especially nice in autumn with Rila Monastery and Bucharest's old center surrounded by fall colors.

Why combine Greece and Turkey into one trip?
Greece and Turkey make a practical and rewarding combination. The ferry routes between Greek islands and Turkey’s coastal cities, like Samos to Kusadasi, make it easy to move between the two. Both countries offer a mix of ancient ruins, lively cities, and scenic coastlines. You’ll get two very different cultures that share a long, intertwined history. Small group tours, like Best of Turkey and Greece with island hopping, help simplify the logistics and include a good mix of landmarks and lesser-known stops.
How do you get between the Greek islands and Turkey?
Several ferries run between the Greek islands and Turkey’s western coast. Popular routes include Samos to Kusadasi, Rhodes to Marmaris, and Mykonos to Çeşme. The crossing usually takes one to three hours, depending on the route. It’s a scenic ride and often quicker than flying. Ferries can be booked through tour providers or at the port, though buying tickets in advance is a good idea in the high season.
What cultural differences should you know before visiting?
Greece and Turkey share historical roots, but their modern cultures are different in meaningful ways. Greece is mostly Orthodox Christian and you’ll see that in places like the Meteora monasteries. Turkey is predominantly Muslim and home to landmarks like the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. When visiting religious sites in either country, it’s respectful to dress modestly and cover shoulders or knees where needed. Learning a few greetings in both Greek and Turkish is a small gesture that goes a long way with locals.
What lesser-known places are worth visiting?
Outside of Athens and Istanbul, there are plenty of places that get less attention but are worth adding to your trip. In Greece, Mystra is a hillside Byzantine ruin near Sparta that feels quiet and untouched. The cliff-top monasteries at Meteora are as dramatic as they are historic. In Turkey, Pamukkale has white terraces formed by mineral-rich water that look almost snow-covered. Cappadocia’s valleys and rock-cut homes, along with underground cities like Derinkuyu, offer something very different from coastal towns.
