• How do I best explore Sardinia?

  Renting a car is your best bet for really getting around the island freely - you'll be able to discover hidden spots like those amazing quartz beaches at Is Arutas or the ancient Nuraghe Santu Antine complex that you might miss otherwise. The coastal SS125 "Oriental Sarda" highway gives you incredible views but heads up it's pretty winding and you'll need to be confident behind the wheel. Public transport isn't great once you're outside Cagliari and Alghero. If you want to explore the coast grab a boat tour from Palau - it's the perfect way to find those secret coves in the La Maddalena Archipelago where you've got protected waters full of marine life and some fantastic hiking trails on the granite islands with views that'll take your breath away.

• How long should I plan to stay in Sardinia?

  You'll want at least 7 days to see the highlights without rushing around too much. Most people take the classic north-south route from Olbia down to Cagliari which lets you check out Alghero's beautiful Catalan architecture explore Bosa's medieval castle and try their famous Malvasia wines then finish up in Cagliari's historic Castello quarter. If you can stretch to 10-14 days even better - you'll have time to head inland to the Gennargentu mountains explore more of those fascinating Nuragic sites and really soak up places like the glamorous Costa Smeralda and the wild Costa Verde with its massive 50-meter sand dunes.

• What unique experiences shouldn't I miss in Sardinia?

  You've got to dive into the local culture - try joining a traditional feast in Bosa where you'll taste authentic dishes like culurgiones (these amazing herb-filled pasta pockets) fregola with fresh seafood and local bottarga. The ancient Nuraghi sites especially Su Nuraxi di Barumini from 1500 BCE are absolutely incredible. Head to Mamoiada to try Cannonau wine in traditional cantine they've been making this robust red here forever. The Pecorino Sardo aging caves in Gallura are fascinating and if you're around on May 1st don't miss the Sant'Efisio festival in Cagliari - it's as authentic as it gets.

• Which hidden gems should I check out?

  The Sinis Peninsula is incredible with its pink quartz beaches and wetlands full of flamingos near Cabras plus you've got those ancient Phoenician ruins at Tharros looking out over the Gulf of Oristano. Costa Verde's got this amazing mining heritage at Montevecchio with beautifully preserved 19th-century industrial buildings. If you're up for some adventure the limestone gorges of Supramonte especially the Gola di Gorropu canyon are spectacular - you can reach them on challenging trails from Dorgali or Urzulei. And make time for Orgosolo it's this really authentic village known for political murals and you can join traditional shepherds' lunches called "pranzo con i pastori."

• Is it difficult to drive around Sardinia?

  You'll need to keep your wits about you especially on those narrow winding roads like the SP71 to Cala Gonone. Watch out for ZTL zones in historic areas - places like Cagliari's Castello and Alghero's old town are really strict about access. The mountain roads through Gennargentu and Supramonte need careful handling particularly if you catch some winter snow. Most bigger towns have good park-and-ride options - like Alghero's beach shuttle service during peak season. For tricky routes like the off-road track to Cala Goloritzè or those mountain roads up to Tiscali you might want to think about joining a guided tour.
