What people love about touring Balkans solo
- Balkan Express: Serbia, Bulgaria, North Macedonia & Albania – 7 Days
This tour was excellent, our operator was Victor Tours and his driver and Stefan the guide, they exceeded for our expectations. Everything was impeccable.
- Explore the Balkans (9 destinations)
Great trip to whet the appetite to see more of this amazing region!
- Small Group: Balkan Essentials in 9 days
I had such a great time on this tour! I visited during July from the UK. There was only 7 of us including my family of 4, so it felt very personal. All the places visited were so beautiful and full of history with strong Austrio-Hungarian and Ottoman influences. I feel particularly that Bosnia is very underrated, it was nice for there not to be loads of tourists, but I feel more people should visit it. We booked the 4* hotel package and they were all centrally located in each area and very comfortable. The tour guides we had were Vladimir then Marco, who were both extremely professional, knowledgable, attentive and had great command of English. They even arranged local tour guides for Sarajevo, Mostar and Dubrovnik to deliver more in-depth information which was useful. We had a comfortable bus with AC and Wi-Fi, with plenty of stops on long journeys. Passing through borders was quick and no problem at all. My tour highlights were visiting Sarajevo which is so unique, trying the very hearty local cuisine, having a small group and you get to know each other and the guide quite well, we booked the optional speedboat tour in Montenegro which I’d recommend doing and got to go for a dip with some wine in the sea! I’d highly recommend this tour to everyone. There’s no rigorous walks so it is accessible to all ages. If sensitive to the heat, it might be worth avoiding the peak of summer which is 35 degrees celsius. In Mostar in Bosnia, it can easily go up to 40 degrees. I definitely would return to this area and thanks once again to the tour company for giving me a highly memorable, fun and professional trip!
What our customers ask about Balkans Tours for Solo Travelers
How social are Balkans group tours for solo travelers?
Balkans tours create natural opportunities to form connections with fellow travelers. The Dubrovnik to Santorini tour lets you share daily experiences like wine tasting in Kosovo's Rahovec Valley exploring local bazaars and enjoying group meals at authentic spots such as Question Mark tavern in Belgrade. A TourRadar traveler noted "We had an EXCELLENT tour guide who helped bring the group together and the small group size made it easy to bond with others." The 3-4 star accommodations including places like Hotel Royal Inn in Belgrade provide comfortable common spaces for socializing with other travelers.
How much free time will I have to explore independently as a solo traveler?
Tours provide a mix of structured activities and independent time. You can expect 2-3 hours of free time each day especially in major cities like Zagreb Sarajevo and Dubrovnik. A Choose Balkans tour reviewer shared: "The guide was great at suggesting local spots to explore during free time and I felt comfortable wandering the charming streets of Kotor and Split on my own."
What's the best time of year for solo travel in the Balkans?
While July through September marks peak season the shoulder months of May-June and September-October offer pleasant temperatures with fewer tourists. Tour booking data shows September as a popular choice. Cities like Dubrovnik remain warm enough to enjoy beachfront locations like Hotel Lapad but with less crowding. A TourRadar traveler noted "Traveling in September when the weather was perfect and tourist crowds had thinned out."
What's the typical group size on Balkans tours for solo travelers?
Groups usually range from 8-16 travelers creating a balance between intimacy and social interaction. The Balkan Extended tour from Budapest to Split caps at 12 participants. A TourRadar traveler shared: "With just 10 of us in the group including 4 other solo travelers it was easy to get to know everyone and form real friendships." These smaller numbers allow stops at local venues like traditional Serbian kafanas or Macedonian wineries.
Do I need to pay a single supplement as a solo traveler?
Single supplements exist but can often be avoided. Intrepid Travel offers roommate matching on their Western Balkans tour which includes stays at properties like DoubleTree by Hilton in Bucharest. Supplements typically cost between USD 200-600 based on tour length and accommodation quality. One traveler noted "The single supplement was worth it for the privacy but sharing is a great way to meet people."
