Western Europe Group Rail Tour (18-30 year olds) - N
Nic • traveled in May
Pace of the tour was great - I'm an 'on the go' kind of traveller so it suited me just fine. Sure there were long bus days and they were torture but you're covering a lot of ground so it's expected. There was no pressure to take up the optional activities which I liked - that hasn't been my experience with other tour companies. Our Trip Manager, Remi, was fantastic as was Attila our driver - his skill for manoeuvring the bus was insane! Accommodation exceeded my expectations - being 'hostel/hotel' I was expecting dodgy hostels and a massive communal bathroom but the rooms were on the whole quite spacious, very few were of the 'all bunk bed' set up and the bathrooms were only quad share which was very manageable. In the main, the included breakfasts were great - we were warned not to expect much but toast, juice, cereal is really all I was after anyway. My only negative was how the rooms were assigned - having booked together, myself & my travel companion figured we'd at least be placed together but a room sheet would be passed up and down the bus so when we got it LAST, we only had the option of single places left which separated us. Let's just say my poor room mate had a less-than-ideal experience and it kind of put a sour taste in our mouths after that and had me stressing for the next room assignments. Also, I realise 'Contiki cough' isn't a term ya'll like but we joined part way through and I came down with it literally overnight... Even just putting hand sanitiser on the bus or, heaven forbid, face masks, would help reduce the spread, especially on the long driving days when you're all confined with the air con just recirculating everyone's germs. Oh and the little welcome game of 'speed dating' on the bus assisted in the spread too and made those of us with motion sickness very unwell - might be an idea to stop that or don't make it go on for so long! Despite the negatives, Contiki allowed us to see so much more and in a much shorted time than if we'd done it on our own - it was a great budget option for us to get from Point A to Point B.

Best time to visit France and Italy
- Spring 2026
Spring brings ideal conditions for exploring France and Italy - you'll find pleasant temperatures and fewer people at major attractions. The popular 12-day Rome to London route lets you watch Venetian artisans work with molten glass and wander through the warm-toned streets of Siena. There's also a fantastic Paris to Italy option that takes you through Switzerland, where our guests love seeing Lucerne's Chapel Bridge decorated with spring flowers before heading to the Italian lakes. Photography fans often choose our Provence tours in April and May - you'll catch the early lavender blooms while exploring the Roman sites in Arles and taking a relaxing boat trip to Saint-Tropez. Many first-time visitors opt for the comprehensive Amsterdam to Rome journey, which combines cultural experiences like Black Forest crafts and Venetian glassmaking with plenty of time to explore on your own.

- Summer 2026
Long summer days mean more time for evening walks through Florence and outdoor dining in Rome's Trastevere district. The Barcelona to Rome route is especially popular in summer - our travelers tell us they appreciate how it balances guided tours with independent time. You'll ride a scenic cogwheel train through the Pyrenees and discover the landscapes that inspired Van Gogh in Arles. Another great summer choice follows the Mediterranean from Nice to Rome, including walks through the Cinque Terre and hands-on Italian cooking classes. Families particularly enjoy our Paris-to-Rome summer tour, which includes pizza making in Rome and dinner in an authentic 12th-century Tuscan castle that really captures kids' imagination.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall tours catch Burgundy's vineyards in their autumn colors with perfect temperatures for exploring. Many guests choose our Rome-based route that winds through Tuscany during grape harvest season before heading to French wine country. The itinerary includes stops at medieval towns like Monteriggioni and San Gimignano en route to Florence. Another excellent autumn option takes you from Barcelona through southern France - you'll explore Carcassonne's medieval fortress and follow Van Gogh's path through Provence without the summer crowds. Our London-to-Rome journey works particularly well in fall; customers appreciate how the mild weather makes it comfortable to explore Vatican City and Florence's art collections. Food enthusiasts can join truffle hunts in Tuscany and experience wine harvests in Burgundy alongside the usual cultural sites.

- Winter 2026 / 2027
When winter arrives, our guests find it's actually a fantastic time to discover France and Italy without the usual tourist crowds. The Paris to Rome route through Switzerland has become a customer favorite, where you'll warm up indoors watching Venetian glassblowers craft delicate pieces and Swiss chocolatiers share their techniques. Another popular option starts with Paris explorations, including Seine river cruises and fast-track entry at major sites, before winding south through Italian lake country and finally Rome. Our travelers tell us they love how these winter tours mix cultural immersion, like hands-on Roman cooking classes and perfume workshops on the French Riviera, with plenty of indoor activities when the weather turns cold. For those wanting to see it all, the Amsterdam to Rome journey lets you watch traditional woodcarving in the Black Forest, admire Venetian artisans at work and experience authentic local culture. We've chosen central hotels that put you steps from museums and galleries, while evening meals at carefully selected local restaurants give everyone a chance to gather and share stories from their day.
