Reviews of Small Group tours to Balkans
- Small Group: Balkan Essentials in 9 days
In May I took the Balkan Essentials 7 Days Tour (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia). Coming from Canada, I arrived in Belgrade, Serbia several days ahead of the tour to overcome jet lag; a good decision so I would be ready to start the tour well-rested. The tour was really amazing! Although it was short, it was filled with everything I wanted to see. And it was done at a good pace. There is so much beauty in the countries I visited and I hope one day to return. All the hotels in which I stayed were very good. The hotel breakfasts were excellent. Don't miss out on the great variety offered. Balkan breakfasts fill you up for the entire day! My guide, Veljko, was professional, knowledgeable, organized, and a nice man. I'm pleased he was my guide/driver. As I was the only person on the tour, at first I was a bit nervous - but that quickly passed the moment I met him. Communications from the tour company pre- and post-tour were excellent. Hvala/Thank you to everyone from the agency; the trip was very special!
- All About Greece with 3 Balkan Capitals - Small Group Tour

- Dubrovnik to Athens: Timeless Treasures Tour - Small Group Tour
There were 4 of us on this tour with Igor as our Tour guide/driver in a mini van. We all thought the days could be organised better, the first day was far too long arriving about 9.30pm, raining and dark, the morning tour in Tirana was 3 hrs, too long, could skip the museum with costumes, the visit to the monastery at lake Ohrid needs to be on the way in or the way out save back tracking the same road, the cost of the optional winery was 45 euro, very expensive, we didn't do. We had to pay for the monasteries which wasn't mentioned in the itinerary, also the city tax on the hotels. On the last day we had to take a bus from Meteora to Athens, about 4 - 5 hrs as that is as far as the tour guide goes, the bus was totally full with a day trip from Athens, could not sit together, when the bus got to Athens we had to pay for a taxi ourselves to the hotel. The last day in Athens had a walking tour of 3 hrs, we had to pay for a taxi to take us to the starting spot and another back to the hotel as it was not near the centre. Positives - the hotels were good and basically a private tour with only 4 and could be more flexible. We all still enjoyed the trip but it would be much better if it was organised a bit better.
What our customers ask about Balkans Small Group Tours
What is the typical group size for small group tours in the Balkans?
Small group tours in the Balkans keep numbers between 8-15 travelers ensuring everyone gets personal attention. Groups like "Choose Balkans" maintain these smaller numbers which works well when visiting places like Mostar's Old Bridge or exploring Ohrid Lake. As one TourRadar traveler mentioned: "Love small group. Great itinerary. Very well organized."
How does the accommodation differ on small group tours versus larger tours?
These tours select boutique locally-owned properties such as the Central Park Hotel in Trebinje or Hotel Mark in Belgrade. The smaller hotels put you right in historic centers where you can walk to main attractions. A TourRadar review noted: "The hotels were all centrally located and the rooms were clean and comfortable with great local character."
What unique experiences are possible with small group tours in the Balkans?
The smaller size opens doors to local experiences that larger groups can't access. You can join families for dinner in Kosovo visit family wineries in Montenegro and meet artisans in their Mostar workshops. Groups often spend time with residents in places like Viscri village or learn traditional cooking. One TourRadar traveler shared: "The intimate group size allowed us to have dinner with local families and visit places off the tourist track."
What kind of transportation is used for small group Balkans tours?
Tours use Mercedes Sprinter vans or mini-buses that can handle narrow village roads and mountain routes. The smaller vehicles make it easy to stop at viewpoints like Albania's Blue Eye spring or visit wineries in Kosovo's Rahovec Valley. As a TourRadar reviewer noted: "Our comfortable mini-van could navigate the winding coastal roads of Montenegro and reach remote monasteries that big buses can't access."
How much free time is available on small group Balkans tours?
Tours mix guided activities with independent time. In places like Dubrovnik and Belgrade you might spend 2-3 hours with a guide in the morning then have afternoons free to explore. One TourRadar traveler shared: "I loved having mornings with our knowledgeable guide at sites like Plitvice Lakes then free time to wander charming towns like Mostar at my own pace."
What is the recommended age range for small group Balkans tours?
While tours welcome adults of any age most travelers are between 45-65 years old. You'll need moderate fitness for walking tours in places like Dubrovnik and Kotor. Data shows 61% of participants are over 50 but maintain active lifestyles and interest in local culture. A TourRadar reviewer noted: "Our group ranged from 40s to 70s - everyone could participate comfortably in the activities."
