Tibet Tours & Trips
Have you felt altitude affect you immediately? Lhasa sits at 3,650 meters, and everyone notices. Tibet operates at elevation that changes things, with the Potala Palace dominating the city with over a thousand rooms. Jokhang Temple sees a steady stream of pilgrims, while Sera Monastery is known for its lively monk debates. Lake Namtso, with its stunningly blue waters mirroring the nearby mountains, contributes to the region's reputation as the "roof of the world."

Mate, me Nepal Tibet Tour was a ripper experience, I tell ya! From havin' a gander at the bloody lively cities of Kathmandu and Lhasa, to layin' eyes on the sheer beauty of the Himalayan mountains and the peace and quiet of the Tibetan plateau, every minute was fair dinkum magical. The tour guides were full of knowledge and always ready to lend a hand, and the places we stayed were comfy as and squeaky clean. I reckon this tour is an absolute corker for anyone keen on fully immersin' themselves in the bloody rich culture and history of Nepal and Tibet. Give it a burl, I reckon!

My husband and I recently completed the Lhasa Tour from Kathmandu, and overall, it was an incredible experience. The tour was well-organized, and everything went smoothly from the moment we were picked up in Kathmandu. The arrangements, including transportation and guides, were top-notch, ensuring we could fully enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and cultural experiences. The accommodations were basic but manageable, which is typical for the region. One thing to note, however, is that restroom facilities along the way were in very poor condition—this is beyond the control of the Peregrine. I highly recommend carrying hand sanitizer and being prepared to use open toilets when necessary. This small inconvenience was easily outweighed by the stunning scenery and unique cultural experiences. Despite these challenges, the tour provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore Lhasa’s spiritual and historical landmarks. The visits to Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple were unforgettable highlights. If you’re prepared for a bit of adventure and some rustic conditions, this tour is an amazing way to experience the heart of Tibet. Highly recommended!

Tibet tour companies
Great Tibet Tour and Adventure Himalayan Travels and Treks both get solid feedback from our travelers exploring Tibet and the Himalayas, though they each have their own strengths. At Great Tibet Tour, guides Dajie and Lobsang really shine - our customers consistently mention how well they explain Tibetan Buddhism and local traditions. They take time with questions and make sure everyone's comfortable with the altitude changes and daily schedule.Adventure Himalayan's guides Lakpa and Dambar are known for their excellent English and keeping tours running smoothly. The company does good work organizing complex multi-day treks, but we've had a few travelers mention confusion about visa paperwork. It's worth double-checking all the entry requirements with them early in your planning. We see both companies handle the cultural and physical aspects of Himalayan travel well. Great Tibet Tour might have a slight edge for those focused on Tibetan culture and Buddhist sites, while Adventure Himalayan excels at the trekking logistics, routes and technical aspects of mountain tours. One practical note - altitude adjustment is part of any Himalayan journey, and both companies build in proper acclimatization days. Their guides are experienced at monitoring travelers and adjusting the pace when needed.
Where to start your Tibet trip
Most people kick off their Tibet trip from Lhasa, which is the launch point for 35 of our most-booked tours, while 22 tours start from Kathmandu. You can also begin from Chengdu, Beijing and also Shanghai, though these are less common choices. To get the dates you want, plan about 3.5 months ahead (107 days is the sweet spot) - this matters because our guides are in high demand, and for good reason. They're experts in Tibetan culture, history and Buddhism, plus they're skilled at helping visitors handle the altitude while sharing cultural insights along the way. The prime time to visit is April through October, with May and September offering that perfect mix of pleasant temperatures and clear skies for photos. Winter visits are quieter but special - you might catch traditional New Year celebrations and have major sites like Potala Palace, Yamdrok Lake and also other landmarks practically to yourself.

Best time to visit Tibet
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter in Tibet brings a special kind of quiet, with fewer visitors around the main sites. Our 8-day Lhasa tours let you explore Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple at your own pace, without the usual summer lines. The Kathmandu routes keep running through winter and we provide oxygen supplies to help with the altitude. It's quite something to watch the monk debates at Sera Monastery with snow falling in the courtyards - our travelers often mention this as a highlight. The Everest Base Camp trips run all year and while it gets cold in winter, our guides make sure everyone comes prepared with detailed packing lists.

- Spring 2026
Spring creates perfect conditions for Tibet's longer journeys. The Beijing to Kathmandu overland trip really shines this time of year, with the train ride across the plateau offering amazing views. Our 14-day tours give you just the right amount of time to get used to the altitude while getting to know Lhasa's old town properly. Many tours mix visits to Tashilhunpo Monastery with walks around Yamdrok Lake, where you might catch nomads moving their yaks. The 9-day Everest Base Camp routes work particularly well in spring - you get clear morning views of the mountain and nice temperatures for visiting Rongbuk, the highest monastery in the world.

- Summer 2026
Summer opens up Tibet's harder-to-reach areas, and our longer 14-day Nepal-Tibet combined tours run from June through August. These trips balance cultural visits with time outdoors, and our guides know exactly when local festivals are happening - they'll often adjust the schedule so you can join in monastery celebrations. The Lhasa tours include early morning visits to Drepung Monastery and afternoon sessions watching the monk debates at Sera. Many travelers love how we mix Potala Palace visits with trips to nearby valleys, where local farming families often invite groups into their homes.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall's perfect for overland journeys across Tibet, with tours running 8 to 14 days and crossing multiple high mountain passes. The autumn skies make for exceptional mountain photos, especially around Everest Base Camp - our customers mention this constantly. Several routes combine Shigatse market visits with nights in traditional guesthouses, giving you a real feel for life on the plateau. Tours to Namtso Lake get great feedback in autumn - there's a good chance you'll see pilgrims making their yearly walks around this sacred water. The Lhasa to Kathmandu journeys work really well with fall's stable weather and comfortable temperatures for monastery visits along the route.

How do I deal with the altitude when I get there?
The altitude in Tibet is no joke but tour itineraries are designed to help you adjust gradually with acclimatization days built in when you first get to Lhasa. James one of our travelers suggests drinking lots of water eating well with veggies fruits and protein and taking it easy at first. Like on our 9-day Lhasa Gyantse tour you get two full days in Lhasa to adjust before heading higher up. Definitely chat with your doctor about altitude medication before you go.
What are the real authentic Tibetan experiences I can have?
There's actually loads of ways to experience genuine Tibetan culture you can visit monasteries hang out with local families and explore traditional markets. The monk debates at Sera Monastery are fascinating to watch and doing a kora around places like Jokhang Temple really connects you to local spiritual life. Nepal Social one of our operators suggests checking out local tea houses for proper Tibetan tea culture. James and Dajie's group loved their homestay experience especially on the 7-day Lhasa to Kathmandu tour where they shared meals with families in Dadong Village.
