Alternate accommodations were made for us at the Logging Lodge / Oulangan maja due to gi illness at basecamp. Overall, Martii organized a very good trip, food was great, everyday we did something different. Ismo and Elina were wonderful to work with when Martii was not with us. Loved the Husky sledding day. Glad we went despite changes of plan/ location. Thanks.

Best tour companies for Finland tours
Based on what our travelers have shared, each of these companies brings something different to the table. Intrepid Travel runs smooth operations with interesting itineraries, though you might need a bit of patience during the booking process - their customer service team can be slow to respond at times. Nordic Unique Travels is a mixed bag. Guide Lorenzo gets high marks for his deep local knowledge and flexible approach. However, some of our guests mention communication hiccups, especially for non-English speakers, and occasional schedule confusion that needed sorting out. If you're heading to Finland in winter, Basecamp Oulanka really stands out. Their guides Eki and Martti know every trail and technique for winter activities, plus they provide top-quality gear that keeps you warm and comfortable. The food gets lots of mentions too - their kitchen team knows how to refuel hungry outdoor enthusiasts after a day in the snow. It's clear they've fine-tuned their winter programs over many years of operation. I'm noticing that across all three companies, the quality of guides makes a big difference in how people rate their experience. When you've got someone knowledgeable and adaptable leading the way, those small logistical bumps tend to matter less to travelers.
Best places to start your Finland tour
Helsinki is where most people start their Finnish journey, with about 30 of our recent tour groups kicking off from the capital before heading north. Rovaniemi (Santa's official hometown!) comes in second with 20 tour starts, and the winter sports center of Kuusamo follows with 9 tours beginning there. Finnish tours tend to fill up fast - our booking data shows you'll want to lock in your spot around 78 days ahead, especially for winter trips between November and March. If you're keen to catch the Northern Lights, our guides say September through March works best, with January and February giving you the darkest skies and most reliable weather. Summer's got its own magic though - you can experience the Midnight Sun when daylight seems endless, perfect timing for hiking through national parks or exploring Finland's thousands of lakes that dot the landscape.

Best time to visit Finland
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Finnish winters really shine with some special tours our customers keep coming back to. The Lapland trips work so well because they keep groups small and get you properly involved - you'll handle your own dog sled team through snowy forests and spend time with Sami families learning their traditional reindeer herding ways. Many travelers love the glass igloo stays where you can watch for Northern Lights from your heated room, then head out for husky safaris and visits to see polar bears at Ranua Wildlife Park. The Arctic tours include some cool extras like digging in the Luosto amethyst mine and trying your hand at ice fishing in frozen lakes. Around Oulanka National Park, our guests get into proper winter activities - cross-country skiing across untouched snow and learning to build quinzee snow shelters. For those who want extra comfort, the Aurora tours include first-class glass cabins with private saunas and proper guidance for Northern Lights photography.

Spring in Finland gives you the best of both - snow's still around but the days stretch longer. Our Finnish Wilderness Week really hits the mark, mixing up activities from snowshoeing in Oulanka National Park to learning proper ice climbing on frozen waterfalls. Families particularly like the spring tours because kids can try everything from reindeer sleigh rides to snow fort building, and parents tell us they appreciate how guides adjust everything to match different abilities. The Arctic tours this time of year take you to husky farms where you'll learn exactly how these amazing dogs train and live before taking them out sledding through forest trails.

Summer means endless daylight and our tours make good use of those bright nights. The Helsinki and South Karelia Express works really well - you'll explore the capital city before taking train rides to Lappeenranta, where our guests love evening boat trips on Lake Saimaa watching the sun that never quite sets. The Midnight Sun tour in Lapland's another favorite, mixing authentic experiences like traditional lake-side wooden saunas with visits to gold panning spots and those ancient amethyst mines. You get to meet reindeer at their summer farms and discover Sami culture at Inari's Siida Museum, where locals still actively use four different Sámi languages.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
The Arctic Adventure tours really come into their own in autumn when Northern Lights season kicks in. Our customers love how these trips mix cultural stops at places like the Sámi Museum with active outings like snowmobile rides through forests dressed in fall colors. The private tours include some nice touches like proper aurora photography sessions and nights in glass igloos. You'll get to Santa's Village before the winter crowds arrive, try traditional Finnish activities like ice fishing and snowshoeing, and spend evenings between private saunas and hot tubs under starlit skies.

When's the best time to visit Finland and what can you experience?
You'll find Finland offers completely different experiences depending on when you visit. Winter brings the Northern Lights and all those snow activities you've dreamed about - from December through March you can go husky sledding and zip around on snowmobiles in magical snowy Lapland. One of our travelers Anne absolutely loved the elk stew during her winter adventure there. Summer's totally different with almost 24 hours of daylight from June to August perfect for exploring parks hiking around lakes and experiencing that amazing midnight sun.
Where can you find Finland's natural parks and how do you get there?
Finland's got 40 incredible national parks showcasing everything from rocky archipelagos to vast forests. Nuuksio National Park's just a quick drive from Helsinki where you might spot Siberian flying squirrels while hiking the trails. Over at Liesjärvi you can hike cook traditional Finnish meals over campfires and really connect with nature. Getting to these parks is pretty straightforward - you can hop on public transport or join organized tours from nearby cities. The Nature and hiking tour through Salamajärvi and Pyhä-Häkki National Parks gives you a great taste of Finland's wilderness.
How do you get around Finland?
The trains here are really efficient and comfortable for traveling between major cities including that overnight Santa Claus Express from Helsinki up to Rovaniemi in Lapland. Cities have great public transport with trams and buses running everywhere. If you're heading to rural areas renting a car gives you the freedom to explore scenic routes and create your own adventure.
What local Finnish foods should you try and where can you find them?
Finnish cuisine is full of amazing local specialties. You've got to try Karelian pies - these delicious thin rye pastries filled with rice and topped with egg butter. Up in Lapland reindeer meat is prepared in all sorts of ways and the salmon soup really shows off Finland's fantastic fresh fish. One of our travelers Anne couldn't get enough of the elk stew during her winter trip to Lapland. You'll find all these dishes in local restaurants markets and food tours that'll give you a real taste of Finnish cooking.
