I chose the Central Europe Tour in July so I could get to meet new people, get shown around & get advice too, and we visited some great cities with some great people. Also amazing to sample different food & cultures. Some of the world's biggest & most important cities were included on the trip and there was a good variety of set activities which encouraged me to do things I wouldn't normally do. The gondola ride was so relaxed and a must-do activity in Venice. The palace in Austria was a bit short and may have been better with an audio guide but it was also good to get an idea of the things to do which also generated discussion within the group. Our tour leader Richard was very informative and approachable, easy going & gave loads of suggestions and places to go to cater to everyone's needs!

Tour guide Sergi was great, really patient, helped where he could and really genuinely tried to ensure everyone was having an amazing time. However, I felt the tour itself was way overpriced for what it was. I’m used to group tours having extras/experiences and felt this was just travel (all public), accommodation and the guide. I’ve paid have the price for group tours in Europe with same duration but multiple extras/activities. I also felt the accommodations were average, some above some below so it wasn’t as if that made up for it. I really do not know where the $7k went which is disappointing. I’m on my 7th group tour now and all others have made me feel I got real value for money.

1 Review by TourRadar travelers“Railtours appears to operate on a different model than other tour companies. They seem more tour agents, setting up accomodations and tours with local companies thus spreading your Euro around more efficiently.”

What our customers ask about Train & Rail Tours & Trips in Western Europe
What are the most scenic train routes in Western Europe?
From Switzerland's Glacier Express travelers will see over 200 bridges while crossing the Oberalp Pass at 6,700 feet. The route connects mountain resorts through remote Alpine valleys and peaks. Another notable journey is the Golden Pass connecting Geneva to Lucerne passing Lake Geneva's shores and traditional Swiss villages. A TourRadar traveler noted about the Glacier Express: "The views were incredible and having lunch while watching the epic alpine landscapes drift past was unforgettable."
How long do train journeys typically take between major European cities?
Modern high-speed rail networks have made city-hopping remarkably efficient. Venice to Florence takes 2 hours while Rome to Naples is just an hour away. Longer scenic routes like Paris to Lausanne run about 4 hours and the leisurely Glacier Express needs 8 hours for its St. Moritz to Zermatt journey. A TourRadar traveler mentioned: "The high-speed trains were comfortable and efficient - we could relax and enjoy the scenery while quickly reaching our destinations."
What are the typical accommodation options on train tours through Western Europe?
Budget-conscious travelers can choose from well-equipped hostels while mid-range tourists often opt for 3-4 star hotels. The Generator Hostel in Berlin's Mitte district and Hotel Diplomat in Prague show the range available. As one TourRadar traveler notes: "The hostels were way better than I expected with comfy beds lockers charging points etc. One even had its own brewery inside with their own beer."
How long do most Western European train tours last and what cities are typically included?
Tours range from quick week-long trips to month-long explorations spanning 29 days. Most travelers choose 14-day itineraries covering 5-7 major cities. The "Central Europe Group Rail Tour" represents a typical schedule with 3 nights in Amsterdam and Berlin followed by 2-night stays in Prague Budapest and Venice.
When is the best time to take a train tour through Western Europe?
The shoulder seasons of spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) provide pleasant weather and smaller crowds. Summer brings intense heat particularly in Italy where temperatures can reach 40°C. Swiss Alpine routes operate year-round though winter snow may affect schedules. One TourRadar review states: "We went in September and had perfect weather for exploring cities and enjoying the mountain views from the train."
What type of accommodation is typically provided on Western European rail tours?
Hotels on rail tours prioritize location and convenience. Most properties are 3-4 star establishments near train stations and city centers. Hotel Aberdeen in Venice and Hotel Campanile in Venice Mestre exemplify typical accommodations. A TourRadar reviewer shared: "The hotels were all well-located near stations and city centers making it easy to explore on arrival."
