This was a compact tour, 5 full days with 4 nights in luxurious 5-star hotels. We visited an interesting mix of cultural and religious sites as well as scenic locations. Our guide, Alan Chou, was excellent, very knowledgeable, well organised and most informative. Our group (and bus) were larger than we would have preferred (34) but Alan handled this well. The train ride from Hualien to Yilan was an added bonus.

Best tour companies for Taiwan tours
SuperValue stands out as a top choice for Taiwan tours based on what our travelers tell us. Their attention to detail really shows - from picking quality hotels to planning great meal stops along the way. Guides like Andrew, Hui Liang and especially Iping consistently get mentioned in the positive feedback we receive. If you're looking for something with a more local angle, Intrepid runs solid small-group tours. They're good at getting you into neighborhoods and spots that bigger tours often miss, and their guides tend to be locals who know their stuff. We've had some mixed signals about Delightful Travel lately. While some travelers enjoy their tours, others have reported that what they got didn't quite match what was advertised. There have also been some hiccups with schedules and getting clear answers from their team. If you're considering them, it's worth double-checking the specific details of your tour package beforehand. The most consistent positive feedback comes from SuperValue's customers - they seem to nail the basics while adding those extra touches that make a trip memorable. Their guides know how to handle both the planned activities and those unexpected moments that pop up during any tour.
Best places to start your Taiwan tour
Looking at recent bookings, Taipei is clearly the go-to starting point with 36 of our customer trips kicking off from the capital. A handful of travelers begin in Kaohsiung or Taoyuan instead - just two departures each from these cities. We've found booking about 45 days ahead hits the sweet spot for getting your preferred dates and places to stay. Our customers often mention doing extra homework on hotels pays off, since ratings in some areas don't tell the whole story. Getting around is surprisingly simple - grab a high-speed rail pass and mix it with local transport to reach everything from city centers to quiet mountain spots. The extensive train system and efficient public transit make exploring a breeze. Don't skip the night markets - they consistently top our travelers' highlight lists with amazing local food and also genuine cultural immersion you just can't find anywhere else.

Best time to visit Taiwan
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter tours in Taiwan lean heavily into cultural experiences and indoor activities to escape the cooler temperatures. Our food-focused tours are particularly popular, starting with cooking classes in Taipei where you'll learn to make traditional dumplings and xiaolongbao. Travelers love combining visits to the steamy Yangmingshan hot springs with tea ceremonies in Jiufen's century-old teahouses. For nature enthusiasts, the Alishan Forest Railway offers cozy train rides through misty mountain forests, while cycling tours around Sun Moon Lake take advantage of the cooler weather for comfortable rides. Many of our customers particularly enjoy the whisky tasting sessions at Kavalan Distillery followed by traditional arts workshops - it's a great way to stay warm while getting hands-on with local culture.

- Spring 2026
Spring brings cherry blossoms and perfect temperatures for our most active tours. The Taste of Taiwan by Train series gets fantastic feedback for mixing cultural sites with outdoor activities - you'll cycle around Sun Moon Lake in the morning mist and release sky lanterns in Shifen by sunset. Our travelers especially love the spring tea-picking experiences at Hugosum Tea Farm, where you'll learn to roll your own leaves just as local farmers have done for generations. Walking tours through Taipei's oldest street, Dihua, come alive in spring as young entrepreneurs revitalize historic shophouses. The Indigenous Atayal tribe visits are particularly meaningful this time of year, with opportunities to learn traditional hunting techniques and cook bamboo rice in the forest.

- Summer 2026
Summer tours focus on Taiwan's beautiful coastline and mountain retreats. Our customers particularly enjoy the East Coast routes, combining visits to Qixingtan's striking beach with peaceful rides along ocean-view cycling paths. The paddleboarding sessions on Lotus Lake at dawn get great reviews - you'll glide past temples and pagodas before the heat sets in. Mountain tours to Alishan provide relief from summer temperatures, with early morning forest hikes to spot cypress trees and unique wildlife. Food tours take on a different flavor in summer, with night market visits becoming the highlight as locals come out to enjoy evening breezes and street food specialties.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall brings comfortable temperatures and clear skies, perfect for our most comprehensive island tours. Many travelers choose multi-city itineraries that combine Taipei's cultural sites with Tainan's incredible food scene and Kaohsiung's modern art spaces. The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas look especially good against fall foliage, while the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum offers peaceful moments between city explorations. Our hiking tours through Taroko Gorge get particularly good reviews in autumn, though you'll want to check current conditions given recent changes. Fall is also prime time for tea experiences - you can visit multiple growing regions as the weather turns cooler and sample fresh harvests right at the source.
