Kenya and Tanzania Safari Tour Reviews
- Kenya AND Tanzania Classic Safari – Two Birds with One Stone **Sustainable Approach to Travel
We have just completed the 9 day Two Birds one Stone eco tour of Maasai Mara and Serengeti. It has been the most amazing experience for all the right reasons. Of course it's all about the animals we have seen, but we had the most awesome guides in both Kenya and Tanzania. The staff at all the wild camps and lodges we stayed at where so friendly and helpful. Knowing we could enjoy all of this with as small an impact on the environment as possible was comforting.

We had a rough itinerary for our first trip to Africa, and we wanted to visit Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. We had never done anything of this duration and scope before, and we were reliant on Elvis Ayieko and his great staff for their recommendations and input. We changed our plans several times, and Elvis was extremely patient with our questions and modifications. This was truly a trip of a lifetime for us. We started our trip in Uganda with a short visit to see and raft the Nile River. The accommodations in Jinja were wonderful, and Joseph, our driver was great. We took a short flight from Entebbe to Nairobi, where we were picked up by Chris, and we began our savannah safari experience early the next day. George was our guide and driver in Kenya and he was outstanding. He is very knowledgeable and taught us a great deal about the wildlife and the ecosystem of the Serengeti. He always went out of his way to highlight interesting spots along the way and inform and educate us about the fascinating culture of Kenya. We visited Samburu National Park, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Masai Mara National Game Reserve. Our timing placed us in the middle of the Great Migration, and we got to see lots of wildlife. We switched guides at the border, and once again, our guide Hassan was always polite, helpful and knowledgeable. In Tanzania we visited the huge Serengeti National Park, and the Ngorongoro National Conservation Area. Truly a gem of our planet! The wilderness camps in the Serengeti were especially fascinating. We then crossed the border back into Kenya, and we were fortunate to have George as our driver once again. We then visited Amboseli National Park before heading back to Nairobi (with Chris as our guide again) to see the Karen Blixen House and the Kenya National Museum. I can't recommend this company enough. The lodging was all topnotch and the food was always outstanding. And finally, one of the main highlights of the trip was the friendly, considerate people we met. Travel in Africa can be difficult, but the tour guides, and the hotel staff were always kind, courteous, and helpful.
What our customers ask about Kenya & Tanzania Safari Tours
What are the best times of year to visit Kenya and Tanzania for wildlife viewing?
The prime seasons for wildlife viewing fall between July and October when the Great Migration brings millions of wildebeest moving between Serengeti and Masai Mara. Clear viewing conditions exist during the dry seasons (June-October and January-February) as animals congregate near water sources. Many travelers have found success during these periods. A TourRadar traveler notes "During July/August the annual Migration of Wildebeest takes place - this is the right time to spend extra days in the Mara to witness this spectacular event."
What wildlife can I expect to see on a Kenya and Tanzania safari?
The parks feature the "Big Five" (lion leopard elephant rhino buffalo) along with large groups of wildebeest zebras and gazelles. Both regions support diverse ecosystems with hippos giraffes and hundreds of bird species. The Serengeti and Masai Mara have earned their reputation for frequent big cat encounters. A TourRadar traveler shared: "We saw all the Big 5 animals during our safari. The Mara hosts Kenya's largest lion prides and elephant herds. The concentration of game within the Reserve almost guarantees that you will see 4 of the big five on your first game drive!"
What are the key differences between visiting Kenya versus Tanzania for safari?
Kenya's Masai Mara offers accessible savanna landscapes and frequent big cat sightings while Tanzania's Serengeti provides vast open spaces and the unique enclosed ecosystem of Ngorongoro Crater. According to TourRadar travelers: "Tanzania's Serengeti felt more remote with fewer vehicles while Kenya's Masai Mara had excellent infrastructure and frequent wildlife sightings." Kenya's Lake Nakuru specializes in rhino viewing while Tanzania's crater environment ensures reliable animal encounters.
What are some unique cultural experiences available during a Kenya and Tanzania safari?
The safari routes include stops at traditional Maasai communities local markets and heritage centers. One TourRadar traveler shared: "Visiting a Maasai village near Masai Mara was fascinating - we learned about their traditions saw traditional dances and got to buy beautiful handmade jewelry." Travelers can meet Samburu people in Kenya explore Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania and stay at culturally-inspired properties like Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge.
How do the different types of safari accommodations compare in Kenya and Tanzania?
Accommodations range from high-end lodges to authentic tented camps. Properties like Serena Sweetwaters Camp offer modern amenities including swimming pools and climate control. Canvas accommodations such as Mara Zebra Plains connect guests with nature through their open design. As one TourRadar traveler noted: "The lodges were wonderful with the best meals and views. We could see elephants and zebras right from our tent at Serengeti Heritage Lodge." Mid-tier options like Lake Nakuru Lodge balance comfort with safari authenticity.
How much does a Kenya and Tanzania safari typically cost?
Daily rates run between USD 350-1000 per person based on accommodation choices and planned activities. Most 10-14 day combination safaris across both countries range from USD 4000-8000 including meals lodging at properties like Serengeti Safari Lodge game drives and entry fees. A TourRadar traveler noted: "Though not cheap the experience and service at luxury lodges like Serena hotels were worth every penny." Private tours and extended stays tend to command higher prices.
