7 Day Patagonia Itinerary, incl. El Calafate and El Chaltén
Argentina's natural wonders unfold over 7 days across 5 iconic destinations, including El Calafate and El Chaltén. The 17km Fitz Roy trail, Perito Moreno Glacier, and stays at Hotel Las Dunas and Hotel Infinito Sur complement local cuisine at Rancho Aparte.
- Day 1
El Calafate to El Chaltén
Take the 3-hour bus ride from El Calafate to El Chaltén. You'll pass Lake Argentino and Lake Viedma on the way. Make a stop at Parador La Leona where explorer Francisco Moreno once survived a puma attack. Get a seat on the left side of the bus to watch Mount Fitz Roy come into view. Remember to bring layers since Patagonian winds can be strong even on sunny days.
- Day 2
Fitz Roy Trek
Set out on the Laguna de los Tres trail (17km round trip). Start by 7AM to avoid crowds and afternoon winds. The last hour is a steep 400m climb. One hiker shared: "The view of Fitz Roy's granite spires reflecting in the turquoise lagoon makes every step worth it. Bring hiking poles for the descent." Pack water and snacks as there are no services along the way.

Cerro Torre Trail
Walk the more moderate Laguna Torre trek (18km round trip). Follow the path through lenga forests until you reach a glacial lake with floating icebergs under the striking Cerro Torre peak. Take photos in the morning light for the best shots. Bring waterproof hiking boots since the trail gets muddy after rain.

El Chaltén to El Calafate
Spend your morning in El Chaltén exploring the hiking town. You might want to visit Lago del Desierto if time allows. Catch the 5PM bus back to El Calafate. Try the local favorite Rancho Aparte for traditional Patagonian lamb for dinner.

Perito Moreno Glacier
Take a full day to see this incredible glacier. Walk the viewing platforms to see the 70m ice wall from different angles. Book a boat trip to get close to the calving ice. A recent visitor noted: "The thunderous crack of ice breaking off is unforgettable. Go early and stay late – the lighting and crowds are best at the edges of the day."

El Calafate
Use this day to explore town or visit an estancia. The Nibepo Aike ranch shows you authentic gaucho culture and serves a traditional asado. Book early if you're traveling during peak season (December-February).

Departure
If you have time before your flight, try the "Nativo Experience" to learn about local indigenous history. Schedule afternoon flights to avoid rushing in the morning.
7 Day Northwest Argentina Itinerary, incl. Salta and Humahuaca

Salta

Salta to Cachi
Drive through the tobacco-filled Lerma Valley into the striking Escoipe Gorge. The road up Cuesta del Obispo reaches 3,348 meters. Take your time and drink plenty of water at this altitude. Follow the old Inca road Recta de Tin-Tin through Los Cardones National Park to Cachi, where you'll see the snow-capped Nevado de Cachi.

Cachi to Cafayate
Take the famous Route 40 through the Calchaquí Valley. Stop at historic adobe towns like Seclantás, Molinos and Angastaco. Look for the incredible Quebrada de Las Flechas rock formation as you near Cafayate, Argentina's high-altitude wine region.

Cafayate to Salta
Start with morning wine tastings at both boutique and large wineries, focusing on the local Torrontés white wine. Head back to Salta through the colorful Quebrada de las Conchas canyon. Bring your camera for unique rock formations.
- Day 5
Salta to Purmamarca
Follow the historic train route through Quebrada del Toro to San Antonio de los Cobres (4,080m). Pack warm clothes since temperatures drop significantly here. After lunch, visit the enormous Salinas Grandes salt flats before heading to Purmamarca to see the famous Seven Colors Hill.

Humahuaca Gorge
Start early in the UNESCO-listed Quebrada de Humahuaca to catch morning light on Purmamarca's hills. Visit the pre-Inca fortress at Tilcara, cross the Tropic of Capricorn at Huacalera and see the colonial church in Uquía. Visit Humahuaca town before returning to Salta past Maimara's Painter's Palette formation.

Departure
Have a final Argentine breakfast before heading to the airport. Book afternoon flights to avoid morning traffic in Salta.

Mendoza Wine Region
Give yourself two full days to explore the wineries. Visit Luján de Cuyo first - it's the heart of Malbec country. Book your winery visits early, especially for popular spots like Catena Zapata. Visit the Uco Valley on your second wine day. Return to Buenos Aires
Take an afternoon flight back to Buenos Aires so you can buy wine in the morning. Remember the domestic airport (Aeroparque) is closer to the city than the international one (Ezeiza). Plan your transport time accordingly.

Our trip to Patagonia is something that I will never forget. I was willing to travel to Patagonia a long time ago and everything went as it was planned. Hotel Las Dunas and Hotel Chalten Suites were very nice hotels to stay and a special note to Pablo, the guide who joined us at El Chalten during the treks to Laguna de los tres and Torre Mount. We will definetely come back to Patagonia soon.

Communication with Eve from People Travel and Experiences was outstanding — quick responses, helpful guidance, and even arranging a last‑minute change to one of my tours. When my domestic flight was cancelled, she immediately stepped in to assist and later reorganized my transfer. (Avoid flying with Flybondi!!) The local guides in both El Calafate and Ushuaia were exceptional: knowledgeable, engaging, and true professionals. They shared hours of fascinating insights about Patagonia and kept the schedule running smoothly. I appreciated the clear reminders with exact pickup times and tour durations. All transfers were in comfortable vans with friendly, reliable drivers. The hotels were excellent — new, clean, warm, with great breakfasts and indoor pools. The Beagle Canal Hotel in Ushuaia deserves a special mention for its fantastic downtown location. A truly memorable experience, thanks to the excellent support throughout the trip.
