This itinerary was fantastic. There was a nice variety between small villages and castles. Days were long and required lots of walking but the experience was worth it. The bus was comfortable but I was disappointed that it did not have wifi. Our driver was fantastic, handling a big bus through tiny villages with narrow streets. There were many opportunities to enjoy local cuisine. There was little communication the first 2 days in Paris, and if I had to do it over, I would have stayed in Paris on my own, and joined the tour the morning it left for Normandy. The rest of the trip was fabulous.

The first part of our trip was amazing! Our tour guide, Carmen, was friendly and knowledgeable, and our group size was fine. Once we arrived in Paris, things were a bit more chaotic. Our tour group grew exponentially, it was honestly way too big, and many of the people were quite rude and inconsiderate. Showing up late to the bus, pushing in front, etc. Our guide was nice and tried to be patient with the large group, despite their rude behavior. Unfortunately we had 2 mishaps in the Paris portion of the trip - first, our room was really cold. We moved from our initial room which was freezing to a new room, which was also cold, but not as cold as the first. We tried to adjust the thermostat, but it only blew our cool air. We had a few uncomfortable nights of sleep as a result. Second, our itineraries were not accurate for our tour, and the activities were switched from morning to afternoon. We were not notified by the tour guide about the timing of Versailles, so we therefore lost out on repurchasing tickets to go inside, and were only able to see the gardens. The next day, you (Eskapas) provided the tickets to The Louvre for 10:00am admission. The tour did not go to The Louvre until the afternoon. Thankfully they allowed us in the afternoon or we would have missed that too. Overall, we had an enjoyable trip.

In Paris, distances between the three hotels where guests were put up were too long. We wasted time and opportunities by being in taxis or on the bus getting from one hotel to another an hour or more before group was together. Tours and Marseilles were a disappointment.

What our customers ask about City & Culture Tours & Trips in France
What are the must-see cultural highlights on a France In-depth Cultural tour?
France's cultural landmarks range from the grand châChambord and Chenonceau) to the historic Pope's Palace in Avignon and the iconic abbey of Mont Saint-Michel. Art enthusiasts can explore Monet's gardens in Giverny before heading to Arles where Van Gogh's legacy lives on alongside a well-preserved Roman amphitheater. Burgundy's wine estates and medieval towns like Beaune with its historic Hospices offer insights into French heritage. In Paris the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay stand as cornerstones of French art and culture. A TourRadar reviewer noted: "The local guides brought history to life especially in places like Mont Saint-Michel and the Loire Valley châteaux."
When is the best time to visit France for an In-depth Cultural tour?
While June through September marks the high season travelers often find April-May and September-October provide the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds. The Loire Valley gardens at Château de Villandry reach peak bloom in spring. September offers comfortable conditions for exploring Roman sites in Arles and Avignon. A TourRadar traveler shared: "September was perfect for our tour - great weather and less crowded than summer months."
What types of accommodation can I expect on a French cultural tour?
Most cultural tours utilize centrally located 3-4 star hotels such as the historic Hotel Le Donjon in Carcassonne or the Novotel Paris Tour Eiffel. These properties blend French character with easy access to main attractions. Rooms typically include private bathrooms and daily breakfast though they may be more compact than U.S. hotels especially in Paris. According to one TourRadar traveler: "The hotel was in Opera which turned out to be a great location with lots of cafes and shops nearby."
What's included in the meal arrangements on French cultural tours?
Tours generally cover daily breakfasts plus select dinners featuring regional cuisine. Welcome and farewell meals come standard with special experiences like wine tastings in Bordeaux or château dinners in the Loire Valley rounding out the dining program. As one TourRadar traveler noted "the included dinners were excellent especially the local wine pairing dinner in Provence." During free evenings guides can direct you to authentic local restaurants near accommodations like the Pullman Bordeaux Lac.
What's the typical group size for cultural tours in France?
Groups usually number between 12-15 participants with luxury options sometimes limiting attendance to 8-10 people. These smaller numbers allow comfortable navigation of museums historic sites and hotels like the Mercure Tours Nord. One TourRadar traveler commented: "our small group of 12 was perfect for visiting museums and getting personal attention from our guide."
