Provence Tours & Trips
Wandering through Avignon's Palais des Papes is like stepping back centuries. You can follow Van Gogh's actual footsteps around Arles (he painted here!), taste your way through Châteauneuf-du-Pape's wineries, then explore Roussillon where even the buildings are ochre-colored. Luberon's got these medieval towns on hilltops, and Orange still has a Roman theatre that's used for concerts. Provence just soaks you in sunshine and history.

This tour exceeded our expectations; which were high to start with. The Chain Gang did a great job of organizing this tour as every day got better with something more exciting to experience than the day before. Tim (our guide) can be summed up in three words: competent, prepared, and funny! The bikes that they have are good for the job (T-bar Treks) and they provide you with everything that you might need for your trip; e-bikes available. If you are looking for a well-organized and memorable trip, this one could be for you!

Best time to visit Provence
- Spring 2026
Spring river cruises capture Provence as it wakes up, starting in Lyon where you can duck into those mysterious traboules before sailing to Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy. The paired villages of Tournon and Tain-l'Hermitage work perfectly in spring - you can taste wines while watching the terraced vines come back to life. Our cycling clients particularly love the spring departures, with just the right weather for riding through places like Saint-Rémy where Van Gogh did his best work. The route from Arles through the Roman sites to St Quentin la Poterie lets you see artisans still working with clay just like their ancestors did centuries ago.

- Summer 2026
Summer heat needs clever planning, as one of our cycling guests pointed out, so we've adjusted our routes accordingly. The tours from Pernes-les-Fontaines through the Vaucluse now start early with plenty of stops in shady villages and cool-off breaks by hotel pools. Lots of people go for the Côtes du Ventoux circuit - you get easy rides through Vacqueyras vineyards and optional tough climbs if you're feeling strong. We give everyone GPS units and paper maps since phones tend to overheat in the Provençal summer sun. Most guests mix morning rides with afternoon culture - maybe cycling to Château Pesquie for wine tasting then relaxing in old Mazan.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Autumn brings out Provence's harvest traditions, and you'll see it best on our river trips from Lyon to Arles that line up with the wine harvest - fresh pressings in Beaune and Hermitage included. The Luberon walks really come into their own now - those ochre cliffs at Roussillon pop against autumn's blue skies and you might catch truffle hunters working with their dogs in the woods. The cycling gets better too, especially around Mont Ventoux where cooler temps make the climbs more doable. We've got this great route linking Bonnieux, Lacoste, Menerbes and other villages Peter Mayle wrote about, right when the grape and olive harvests are happening.

- Winter 2026 / 2027
Winter opens up Provence in unexpected ways, especially along our Paris-Mediterranean route through Lourdes. The Palace of Versailles takes on a special glow in winter light and Carcassonne's medieval streets feel more authentic without summer visitors. Many of our clients opt for the Catalonian crossing into France - you get Collioure's seaside charm and Carcassonne's Castle of the Counts practically to yourself. The Palace of the Popes in Avignon, which happens to be the world's largest Gothic building, becomes much more enjoyable without the usual queues. We've also got tours linking Burgundy and Provence, passing through Savigny Castle's transport museums before heading down to the warmer Mediterranean cities.
