The June ‘26 cycling trip through Provence with Explore! far surpassed our expectations. As it was our first cycling trip, there was a fair amount of anxiety but that was addressed with detailed & prompt communication prior to the trip and lots of reassurance along the way. The itinerary was very interesting with gradual increase in difficulty matching the varied terrain and incredible sightseeing opportunities. Julien ( our guide) was extremely helpful & attentive checking in on EVERYONE throughout the day & offering advice/encouragement along the way. It is through his consistent effort that our group became a cohesive team looking out for each other on our adventure. Explore! chose perfect accommodations for our home base allowing for plenty of comfort & recovery. Overall, an excellent active vacation! Bravo Explore!

Autumn brings out Provence's harvest traditions, and you'll see it best on our river trips from Lyon to Arles that line up with the wine harvest - fresh pressings in Beaune and Hermitage included. The Luberon walks really come into their own now - those ochre cliffs at Roussillon pop against autumn's blue skies and you might catch truffle hunters working with their dogs in the woods. The cycling gets better too, especially around Mont Ventoux where cooler temps make the climbs more doable. We've got this great route linking Bonnieux, Lacoste, Menerbes and other villages Peter Mayle wrote about, right when the grape and olive harvests are happening.

Winter opens up Provence in unexpected ways, especially along our Paris-Mediterranean route through Lourdes. The Palace of Versailles takes on a special glow in winter light and Carcassonne's medieval streets feel more authentic without summer visitors. Many of our clients opt for the Catalonian crossing into France - you get Collioure's seaside charm and Carcassonne's Castle of the Counts practically to yourself. Summer heat needs clever planning, as one of our cycling guests pointed out, so we've adjusted our routes accordingly. The tours from Pernes-les-Fontaines through the Vaucluse now start early with plenty of stops in shady villages and cool-off breaks by hotel pools. Lots of people go for the Côtes du Ventoux circuit - you get easy rides through Vacqueyras vineyards and optional tough climbs if you're feeling strong. We give everyone GPS units and paper maps since phones tend to overheat in the Provençal summer sun. Most guests mix morning rides with afternoon culture - maybe cycling to Château Pesquie for wine tasting then relaxing in old Mazan.
