The local tour operator Rolandia were great. Really responsive and answered all our questions promptly. All hotels were of a high standard and in great locations. The tour itself was beyond expectations, and our guide Claudia was extremely knowledgeable and went above and beyond to ensure all our needs were met. Best tour companies for Transylvania tours
Based on the reviews from TourRadar, four tour companies really stand out for Romanian travel and each brings something special to the table. Travel Talk and Explore! get loads of positive feedback about their guides - you'll get proper experts who know Romanian history inside out and actually make it interesting. They're friendly too, which makes a big difference when you're spending days together. If you're particular about comfortable travel between sites, Rolandia Tours seems to have that sorted - their transport gets consistently good marks from travelers. Romanian Thrills does a great job with the planning side of things; they communicate well and leave no detail to chance. What's nice about all these operators is how they've structured their Transylvania routes. The itineraries make sense logically and you get real Romanian experiences rather than just tourist spots. Our customers often mention how they appreciated getting beyond the surface level and actually understanding the culture, especially in Transylvania where there's so much history and local tradition to take in. The guides seem to make the difference here - they're not just showing you around, they're helping you understand what you're seeing and why it matters in Romanian culture. It's clear these companies have put in the work to create tours that feel authentic and well thought out.

Best time to visit Transylvania
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter really shines for cultural touring in Transylvania when the big crowds thin out. Our small groups get to explore Peles Castle, Bran Castle and other sites with much more space to themselves. The medieval towns look particularly good with a dusting of snow - you'll get excellent photos in Brasov's Council Square and walking across Sibiu's Bridge of Lies. Many of our travelers tell us how the Gothic chambers of Bran Castle feel properly atmospheric in winter, especially during our private after-hours visits when you practically have the whole place to yourself. The early sunsets and crisp air really add to that mysterious castle mood.

- Spring 2026
Spring hits the sweet spot for mixing outdoor activities with cultural visits in Transylvania. Our cycling tours work perfectly in April and May - you'll cover between 34 and 55km daily through forests coming back to life and genuine village communities. A lot of travelers pick our combined tours that connect Bucharest's architectural gems with medieval towns like Brasov, Sighisoara and also Sibiu. The mild weather makes it ideal for walking through UNESCO sites and fortified churches, plus you can watch local craftsmen at work in places like Viscri. Since it's just before peak season, you'll find good deals and plenty of space at our favorite family guesthouses and boutique hotels.

- Summer 2026
Summer's long days let us pack plenty into our Transylvania tours - you get castle visits, village exploration and outdoor activities all in one. The cycling routes are particularly good now, especially through Piatra Craiului National Park and rural backroads. Many of our guests love how we mix things up - you might start at Corvin Castle in the morning then spend your afternoon hiking mountain paths or meeting rescued bears at the Libearty sanctuary. When the Transfagarasan highway opens in July, our guides take you along one of Europe's most impressive mountain drives between cultural stops.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall brings out Transylvania's character with medieval towns framed by the Carpathians' autumn colors. Our travelers often join in with harvest activities in the villages - helping collect grapes for wine or preparing traditional winter preserves with local families. The cultural visits get special touches this time of year with private access to historic buildings, tastings in ancient wine cellars and visits to working artisan workshops. You'll see lots of traditional craft demonstrations at the ASTRA Village Museum, and our guests tell us how much they enjoy exploring Sighisoara's winding cobbled streets and climbing castle towers surrounded by fall foliage.

I've heard about cultural activities in Transylvania - what can I actually do there and where should I go?
You'll find amazing hands-on experiences in Transylvania's villages that really connect you with local life. Head to Viscri or Saschiz where you can work alongside artisans in their workshops - try your hand at traditional blacksmithing learn wool weaving on these beautiful old looms or make Saxon-style ceramics. For a real taste of local life join a dinner in one of those incredible 300-year-old Saxon barns in Malancrav or Mesendorf where families cook amazing dishes like sarmale using recipes passed down through generations. Don't miss the bread-making workshops in Crit village where you'll do everything from grinding wheat in medieval mills to baking in the original stone ovens that villages have used forever.
Where can I find the best natural areas to explore and how do I get to them?
The Carpathians are just incredible and Piatra Craiului National Park is definitely a highlight with these dramatic limestone ridges and amazing wildlife. You can easily access the trails from Magura or Zarnesti villages - there's everything from gentle valley walks to proper ridge hikes if you're up for a challenge. The Libearty Bear Sanctuary near Zarnesti is fascinating 69 hectares of oak forest where rescued bears roam free you'll need to book a guided tour for this one. If you're looking for high-altitude adventures the Fagaras Mountains are perfect for hiking from June through September and you can use the famous Transfagarasan highway to reach some amazing trails around Balea Lake at 2034m.
What are some of the less touristy routes around Transylvania that locals recommend?
If you really want to get off the beaten path try the village-to-village routes through Saxon communities. There's this fantastic circuit connecting Viscri Biertan and Malancrav where you'll see real village life - people still use horse-drawn carts and farm like they have for centuries. Travelers who've done these routes love them because you avoid the crowds and get to stay in family guesthouses where the hospitality is just incredible. The Via Transilvanica is another gem - it's this 1000km marked trail that takes you through all these different cultural regions from mountain villages to beautiful pastoral valleys.
I'm looking for authentic places that aren't packed with tourists - what should I check out?
Skip the busy Bran Castle and head to Rupea Fortress instead - it's this amazing 14th-century citadel with three defensive rings and the views across Transylvania's hills are just stunning. The Densuș Church is really special it's Romania's oldest working church built with stones from the old Roman settlement at Sarmizegetusa Regia. The villages around Sibiu especially Rășinari and Sibiel are perfect if you want to see traditional Romanian life without the tourist crowds - there's even Europe's largest collection of reverse glass-painted icons here. In summer check out the Hârtibaciului Valley where you can watch traditional haymaking and see how shepherds still live and work in these beautiful meadows.
What local foods should I try and where's the best place to find them?
You're in for a treat with Transylvanian food - it's this amazing mix of different cultural influences. Try the borsch with home-smoked meat and fresh vegetables in the guesthouses along Târnava Valley it's absolutely delicious. When you're in Brașov look for restaurants serving vânătoresc and cozonac secuiesc these are real local specialties. If you're here in summer head up to the mountain shepherd camps for brânză de burduf - it's this incredible sheep cheese aged in pine bark. The rural guesthouses especially in Mărginimea Sibiului serve amazing farm-to-table meals - don't miss the tochitură with mămăligă or alivenci. And if you're here in autumn the markets in Sibiu and Mediaș are perfect for trying seasonal specialties like zacuscă and local plum brandy.
