Beautiful landscapes! Negativ: we slept in threebedrooms with no windows towards outside - in high altitude - 3800-4200m ! Lack of Oxygen! But after all it was an unforgetable experience!

Unu Raymi Expeditions was extremely helpful, quick to respond, and super accommodating when I needed to adjust my plans due to personal reasons. Their customer service was excellent, and they promptly addressed any concerns I raised. However, the execution of the tours was not as smooth as I had hoped. Since the operator is not based locally, there was significant miscommunication with the local agents. Contacts kept changing, which left me uncertain about who to reach out to at times. Some of the local agents seemed disorganized, with instances of trying to charge extra, not fully adhering to the tour’s terms, and even shortening some of the activities. While the main operator was fantastic in resolving these issues when I raised them, the overall experience could have been much better with a more reliable local team.

Intrepid Travel really stands out for keeping their groups small, which makes a huge difference in how you experience places. When you're not moving around as part of a big crowd, you get to actually chat with locals and slip into smaller restaurants and spots that bigger groups just can't access. Their guide Gonzalo gets mentioned a lot in TourRadar reviews - he's got this deep knowledge of the areas and goes out of his way to help everyone in the group feel comfortable. Bamba's also getting good marks from travelers for putting together solid itineraries and their food stops are spot on. Their guides know their stuff and really help bring places to life. That said, a few of our travelers have hit some bumps with flight arrangements and getting clear updates about their bookings. It's worth noting these communication hiccups since they've come up more than once in recent feedback. When you stack them up, Intrepid seems to have the edge on the personal touch and smoother operations, but Bamba's definitely got their strong points too, especially when it comes to their food choices and local expertise.
Best places to start your Bolivia tour
When you're mapping out your Bolivia trip, La Paz is your main jumping-off point with 49 different tours starting there. Uyuni town offers 15 departure options and Santa Cruz has 11 different tours, while Tupiza and San Pedro de Atacama in Chile each run 4 departures. Book about 2 months ahead - our data shows 58 days is the sweet spot, especially since salt flat tours fill up fast in peak season. Our past travelers really stress taking 2-3 days in La Paz first to get used to the altitude. Many find it works well to mix their salt flats visit with time exploring La Paz's local markets and indigenous communities - it adds real cultural depth to the trip. The city's cable car network isn't just practical transport; you'll get amazing mountain views that make it a genuine highlight of your time there.

- Spring 2026
Spring touring kicks off nicely between September and November, with our popular 10-12 day routes from La Paz letting you see the salt flats before the busy season hits. You'll catch the flamingos gathering at Laguna Colorada too. The Chataquila trek near Sucre is at its best now - our travelers love the mild weather and valleys full of flowers. Many routes spend extra time in Potosí during spring, perfect for exploring silver mine history and colonial churches without summer heat. The weather's also just right for mixing Death Road cycling with visits to local indigenous markets.

We include good time at the Train Cemetery and Colchani salt processing town too - the summer warmth makes exploring these outdoor spots much more pleasant.
