    • Day 1

      La Paz Arrival & Acclimatization

      You'll land at El Alto International Airport, about 25 minutes from central La Paz. Take it slow today at 11,500 feet elevation. The Sopocachi neighborhood makes a good base with its restaurants and walkable streets. Stick to coca tea and skip alcohol for the first 24 hours.

    • Day 2

      La Paz City Exploration

      Visit the Basilica de San Francisco first. The Mi Teleférico cable car system will take you to Mirador Killi Killi. Go before noon to catch clear mountain views. Spend your afternoon at the Witches' Market (Mercado de las Brujas). Remember the steep streets can be tough at this altitude. Take breaks when you need them and drink plenty of water.

    • Day 3

      Uyuni Salt Flats

      Book a morning flight to Uyuni (50 minutes) when the winds are calmest. Start at the Train Cemetery before it gets too hot. The salt flats come next, with Isla Incahuasi best visited in the afternoon for photos. The salt reflects intensely so pack sunglasses and strong sunscreen.

      Eduardo Avaroa Reserve

      Get ready for a long day with a 3.5-hour drive to Chiguana Desert. The roads are rough but you'll be rewarded with lagoons full of flamingos. Bring motion sickness pills if you need them. Pack layers as desert temperatures can change by 40°F from morning to midday.

      Sol de Mañana & Green Lagoon

      Start early for the Sol de Mañana geysers. Bring plenty of warm clothes as it's often below freezing before dawn. You can warm up in the hot springs afterward. A short drive takes you to Salvador Dali Desert and Laguna Verde. Head back to Uyuni to sleep.

      Tiwanaku Ruins

      Fly back to La Paz and head to Tiwanaku, a UNESCO site. You'll need 2-3 hours to see the ruins properly. The site spreads out at high altitude so walk at your own pace. Plan to photograph the stone faces and Gateway of the Sun in the afternoon light.

    • Day 1

      Calama to San Pedro de Atacama

      Take the 1.5-hour transfer from Calama Airport to San Pedro de Atacama (8,000 ft elevation). Focus on gentle activities today to adjust to the altitude. Walk the adobe-lined streets and drink lots of water. "The hostel in San Pedro Aji Verde was very nice, though rooms can get crowded with backpacks." Consider booking accommodation in the quieter northern area away from the main plaza.

    • Day 2

      Geysers del Tatio

      Leave at 4:30 AM for the geysers. Pack plenty of warm clothes - temperatures range from 21°F in summer to -4°F in winter. The 1.5-hour drive takes you up to 14,000 ft where you'll watch the steaming geysers at sunrise. You'll be back by 12:30 PM to rest and continue adjusting to the altitude. Try some coca tea to help with the adjustment.

      San Pedro

      Take today to explore the area on your own. You might want to book a Moon Valley sunset tour or visit the high-altitude lagoons if you're feeling well-adjusted. Make sure to get Bolivian currency today since you won't find ATMs after crossing the border.

    • Day 4

      Start of Overland Journey

      Head out early (6:30-7 AM) in shared 4WD vehicles. Cross into Bolivia at Hito Cajon near Licancabur Volcano. You'll reach 14,700 ft while visiting flamingo-filled Red and White lagoons. Spend the night at a simple but clean family hostel in Huaylajara. "Pack lots of layers and snacks - facilities are very basic up here."

      Desert Landscapes

      Today brings more stunning scenery through the Siloli Desert with its unique wind-carved rocks. Visit Hidden Lagoon and Anaconda Canyon before reaching your salt hotel near the Uyuni flats. The accommodation is much more comfortable than the previous night.

      Uyuni Salt Flats

      Start early (4-5 AM) to see sunrise over the salt flats. Spend your morning taking photos of the endless white landscape and playing with perspective shots. Have lunch near Colchani village before reaching Uyuni town. Take the 8 PM overnight bus to La Paz.

      La Paz Arrival

      Arrive in La Paz in the morning. While the tour ends here you might want to spend an extra day exploring the world's highest capital city at 11,900 ft. The cable cars offer great views of the city and surrounding snow-capped mountains.
