What people love about Hiking & Trekking Tours in Bhutan
- Kingdom in the Clouds - Walking Holidays
We loved our tour; Kingdom in the Clouds-Walking Holidays with World Tour Plan. Our private guide & driver, Singgay & Namgay, were exceptional. They were knowledgeable, friendly and fun to spend time with. They were also flexible with our plans. It was nice to spend as much or as little time as we wanted at sites and they were quick to come up with alternatives when the weather changed or we got behind in the schedule. They even switched hotels at the last minute when they found out they hotel did not give us the view rooms they had requested. We enjoyed hiking 8 out of the 11 days instead of spending time in a bus or driving through the country. The tour also includes glamping above Tiger's Nest. Hiking down to Tiger's Nest gave us a unique view of the temples. It also meant we did not have to hike up to Tiger's Nest with the hoards of tourists. Instead we had a peaceful walk through the woods and past small monasteries on the way to Tiger's Nest. I can't recommend this tour & tour company enough.

What our customers ask about Hiking & Trekking Tours & Trips in Bhutan
What is the best time of year for hiking in Bhutan?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) provide the most reliable conditions for hiking in Bhutan. Spring brings moderate temperatures to the Paro and Punakha valleys with blooming rhododendrons while autumn offers the clearest views of mountains around Thimphu and Bumthang. The summer monsoon season from June to August makes trails difficult to navigate and winter months of December through February see heavy snowfall at higher elevations like Lingzhi at 4010m. A TourRadar traveler commented: "We visited in October and had perfectly clear days for viewing Mt. Gangkar Puensum and the Himalayan peaks from Dochula Pass."
What level of fitness is required for hiking in Bhutan?
Bhutan's high-altitude terrain demands moderate to good physical conditioning. The popular Tiger's Nest Monastery hike takes 4-5 hours with a 900m climb. For multi-day excursions like the Paradise Bhutan Trek expect 5-7 hours of daily walking at elevations between 3000-4300m. Previous mountain hiking experience helps especially on extended routes. One TourRadar traveler noted: "The Druk Path Trek had some challenging days but was manageable with regular fitness and proper acclimatization at Jele Dzong (3480m)."
How challenging is the Tiger's Nest Monastery hike?
The climb to Tiger's Nest Monastery represents a moderate challenge gaining 900m over 4-5 hours round trip reaching 3120m at the temple. A TourRadar traveler reported: "The warm up hike day was amazing to be walking up to Tigers nest monastery and hearing the monks chanting with it echoing through the valley." The route follows established steps and paths with a rest stop and cafe at the midpoint. Most reasonably fit visitors can complete the trek at a steady pace. Mules are available for transport to the viewpoint and many hikers choose to stay at Tashi Namgay Resort in Paro for an early start.
Where do hikers stay during multi-day treks in Bhutan?
Multi-day treks combine camping and hotel stays. Popular routes like the Jhomolhari Trek use full-service camps with two-person tents dining areas and bathroom facilities at designated spots such as Jangothang Base Camp at 4080m. Hotels like Meri Puensum Resort in Punakha or Lhayhuel Resort in Paro provide accommodation before and after treks. A TourRadar traveler shared: "The camping equipment was excellent and our camp staff prepared delicious hot meals even at high altitude camps like Lingzhi at 4010m."
What wildlife might I encounter while hiking in Bhutan?
The varied landscapes of Bhutan support rich wildlife viewing opportunities. Phobjikha Valley at 3000m welcomes black-necked cranes from November to March. Jigme Dorji National Park houses blue sheep takins and numerous bird species. Higher routes near Lingzhi often reveal yaks and alpine wildlife. A TourRadar traveler recalled: "We spotted several blue sheep near Jangothang Base Camp and countless bird species in the rhododendron forests below Nyele La Pass."
What cultural experiences are included in Bhutan hiking tours?
The hiking routes weave through Bhutan's cultural fabric featuring stops at remote monasteries and traditional villages. Itineraries often include visits to Gangtey Monastery encounters with yak herders near Lingzhi and time in communities like Laya village. Places such as Shomo Chuki Resort in Paro offer traditional hot stone baths. A TourRadar traveler shared: "Meeting the semi-nomadic people of Laya and visiting ancient temples along the trek route provided incredible cultural insights into Bhutanese life."
