7 Days in Nepal, incl. Kathmandu and Nagarkot
An immersive route stretches 40km southeast of Kathmandu, visiting 4 major destinations including UNESCO site Changunarayan. The path winds through Nagarkot (2175m), Dhulikhel (1550m), and Balthali Village with views of Dorje Lakpa peaks.
- Day 1
Kathmandu Arrival
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport and head to your hotel in Kathmandu. Book a hotel in Thamel district to be close to trekking gear shops and restaurants. Take the afternoon to adjust to the altitude (1,400m) and rest.
- Day 2
Kathmandu Exploration
Get to Pashupatinath Temple early before the crowds (around 7AM). Visit Boudhanath Stupa next to see the morning prayer rituals. Leave Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) for late afternoon when the steps are shaded. Get your gear ready for tomorrow's trek.
- Day 3
Changunarayan to Nagarkot (2,175m)
Take a 20km drive east to the UNESCO site of Changunarayan Temple. Your trek starts here through pine forests to Nagarkot, taking about 5-6 hours. One traveler notes: "Bring proper hiking shoes as some sections of the trail can be slippery with loose gravel." Stay overnight in Nagarkot.
- Day 4
Nagarkot to Dhulikhel (1,550m)
Get up before dawn for a 30-minute walk to Nagarkot tower. Bring warm clothes for the chilly morning. After breakfast, trek 5 hours to Dhulikhel through local villages. The path has some ups and downs but nothing too difficult. Bring at least 2 liters of water.

Dhulikhel to Balthali Village via Namobuddha
This 6-hour trek takes you to the sacred Namobuddha monastery before going down to Balthali Village. A trekker advises, "The tea houses have clean rooms but basic facilities - bring a sleeping bag liner." The village offers great mountain views where two rivers meet.
- Day 6
Balthali to Kathmandu
Walk to historic Panauti town (2-3 hours) and check out the 13th-century Indreshwar Temple. Drive back to Kathmandu (40km). Try to reach the city before rush hour traffic picks up. End your day with a farewell dinner and cultural show.

Departure
Head to the airport. If you have time before your flight, do some shopping in Thamel, where prices are usually better than at the airport.

Arrival in Kathmandu
Book an afternoon flight to avoid morning traffic when arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport. After checking into your hotel, take a walk around the lively Thamel neighborhood in the evening. The narrow streets might seem confusing at first but you'll be perfectly safe exploring the area.
- Day 2
Kathmandu Heritage Sites
Visit Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) early before crowds gather. One traveler shared: "The morning light on the golden stupas is incredible, but bring small bills for entrance fees as vendors rarely have change." Visit Pashupatinath Temple next and be sure to dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. End your day at Boudhanath Stupa where you can get great photos in the late afternoon light.
- Day 3
Patan and Bhaktapur
Start your day watching the sunrise in Nagarkot just 40 minutes from Kathmandu. Visit medieval Patan to see its Durbar Square and the Krishna Temple built from a single stone. Spend your afternoon in Bhaktapur exploring the 55-window palace and Nyatapola Temple. The old stone streets are uneven so wear shoes good for walking.
- Day 4
Transfer to Chitwan
The trip to Chitwan National Park takes 5-6 hours on mountain roads. You might want to bring motion sickness medicine if you get carsick easily. The drive takes longer during monsoon season from June through September. Plan to arrive with enough time to watch the traditional Tharu cultural show in the evening.
- Day 5
Chitwan Safari
Start your safari before dawn to see the most wildlife. One visitor noted: "Having our naturalist guide made all the difference. His trained eye spotted a rhino camouflaged in the tall grass that we would have missed completely." You can watch elephant bathing later and take a relaxing boat ride on the Rapti River to look for crocodiles.
- Day 6
Birdwatching and Return to Kathmandu
Go birdwatching early in the morning. Chitwan has over 500 bird species and visibility is best from October to March when the grass is cut back. The drive back to Kathmandu takes most of the day. You might want to stop for lunch at Riverside Springs Resort in Kurintar to break up the trip.

Departure
Give yourself at least 3 hours for airport procedures before your flight. Traffic between central Kathmandu and the airport is unpredictable, especially during morning rush hour.
