Madrid

A regular visitor suggests: "Visit the Real Jardín Botánico in the afternoon when the light is perfect for photos." Spend your evenings in Malasaña, where you'll find excellent tapas bars.

Madrid to Sarria
Take the 6-hour morning train north to Sarria. Use your afternoon to collect your pilgrim passport and walk around this small town. Important: You can only bring one 20kg bag which will be transported between stops.

Sarria to Portomarín (22km)
Begin your Camino through the Galician countryside. One pilgrim advises: "Get an early start to avoid afternoon heat." Stop at Barbadelo and Ferreiros to rest. Plan for 6-7 hours of walking.

Portomarín to Palas de Rei (25km)
The route gets hillier today. Consider using walking poles for the steeper parts. After 7-8 hours on the trail, reward yourself with coffee at a local café in Palas de Rei.

Palas de Rei to Melide (15km)
Today's shorter walk gives you time to explore Melide and its famous octopus dishes. "Share a pulpo platter at a pulpería. It's a must-try Galician specialty, but the portions are huge," recommends one traveler.

Melide to Arzúa to Amenal
Walk through peaceful eucalyptus forests and small villages. The paths are easier here but can be slippery after rain. Each day covers 20-25km and takes 6-8 hours.

Amenal to Santiago de Compostela
The walk into Santiago often moves pilgrims deeply. Plan to arrive for the noon pilgrim mass at the cathedral. A fellow pilgrim notes: "Getting your Compostela certificate feels like such an achievement. Don't forget to get your final stamps!"

Valencia
The train ride from Granada takes about 5 hours. Visit the City of Arts and Sciences in late afternoon for the best photos. You can walk the historic center at night when it's cooler.

Barcelona
Take a morning train along the coast (3 hours). Start at Montjuic for city views before exploring the Gothic Quarter. Book 9 AM Sagrada Familia tickets for your second day to see the best light. San Sebastian
A 2-hour bus ride takes you to this coastal food haven. Take a pintxos tour through Old Town's traditional bars near Plaza de la Constitución. Learn Basque cooking in a morning class. Bring good walking shoes as streets can be slippery when wet. Most traditional restaurants close between lunch and dinner (3-8 PM).

Bilbao & Picos de Europa

Oviedo
