When it’s time to party, there’s nothing quite like doing it in an idyllic location, surrounded by beautiful, tanned bodies moving in sync with endless, rhythmic beats. Long, summer days lead into even longer, balmy nights. Cocktails are seemingly on tap and it feels like the party will never end… or at least, you hope it won’t. This is what travellers look forward to every year when seeking out the top party islands in the Mediterranean.
These are four of the top party islands and towns in the Mediterranean.
1. Ibiza, Spain
The obvious choice and must-visit-at-least-once Mediterranean party destination is Ibiza. If you’re into electronic music, then it is definitely the party destination for you as it throbs day and night with music mixed by some of the world’s most famous and respected DJs. The island is divided into three main party areas, with the quaint, white-washed walls of the village of Ibiza providing a little bit of grounding in between. Everywhere you look there’s a beautiful view and perfect sunset spot set to the tune of some delicious dance tracks. There are also plenty of little nooks, white sandy beaches, and secret coves to escape to when the party gets a bit overwhelming.
Look out for these clubs when you’re in Ibiza:
- Pacha – open year round, though it can get very crowded during peak season and major events
- Space Ibiza – one of the oldest and largest clubs in Ibiza
- Privilege – near San Rafael, one of the largest nightclubs in the world, if not the largest
2. Ayia Napa, Cyprus
Summer in Ayia Napa runs from April until October, but the peak months are definitely June until the end of August. Major events and exciting DJ appearances happen during the peak season and that’s when the square, main strip and stunning beaches are pulsing with life. While Ayia Napa isn’t an island, it’s on the island of Cyprus and it’s one of those “must-visit” destinations that will leave you with unforgettable memories. There are 12 main established clubs, but every year one or two new ones might creep out and make their names known. It’s only at about 11pm that everything really starts to take shape and people start spilling out of every bar, restaurant and café on the quaint cobbled streets. Come 1am, the clubs are open and beckoning party people of every size, shape and colour.
Make your way to these clubs when you’re in Ayia Napa and you won’t regret it:
- The Castle Club – the biggest club in Ayia Napa
- Club Ice – touted as one of the best clubs in the area
- Club Aqua – one of the two clubs that stays open until after sunrise
If party is what you are looking for, then Cyprus is the perfect destination, with the party season starting May though to October! Immerse yourself in the blue waters of Ayia Napa during the day and party well into the early hours of the morning, in one of Europe’s top party destinations. My number one recommendation on the Ayias Mavris strip (club strip of Ayia Napa) is The Castle Club but Red Square (Russian club) sure knows how to throw a party! If non-stop partying is what you are after then head to the Nissi Bay Beach Bar for your midday foam party and pumping music – perfect to get you in the mood. Zivania shots, great music and an awesome tan await! Get to Cyprus! – Valter, Tourist by Chance
3. Hvar, Croatia
From June until the end of September, Hvar city on Hvar island is known as the city that never sleeps. Cafés, bars, restaurants and nightclubs host internationally acclaimed DJs throughout the party season, which in turn evolves the party scene into something quite spectacular. Crystal clear seas and perfect beaches are always within reach of the party, offering the perfect place to cool down after a night of cocktails and dancing. If you’re still keen to keep going, there are the after parties on the beach creating the perfect space to wind down amidst the action.
Make sure you visit these clubs during your stay on Hvar:
- Carpe Diem – Hvar’s most famous club that attracts top DJs
- Loco – beautiful setting for cocktails and sundowners
- Lola Bar – offering live music and great mojitos
4. Mykonos, Greece
As with most of the Mediterranean party islands, Mykonos has retained much of its original charm and beauty, but has the added benefit of being a sought after party scene too. Open air parties are served with fresh sea air and stunning backdrops, with a mix of every kind of electronic music imaginable beckoning clubbers inside the many clubs.
Head over to these clubs for an unforgettable night out in Mykonos:
- Cavo Paradiso – one of the oldest clubs in Mykonos with the biggest outdoor dance floor
- Scandinavian Disco – multiple areas to party, upstairs and downstairs, inside and out
- Paradise Club – built around a huge swimming and outdoor dance floor, this is one of Mykonos’ most popular nightclubs
My recommendation for party lovers would be Scorpios. This 24-hour beach club is absolutely amazing! Grab a drink at the open-air bar then sip cocktails on one of the daybeds overlooking the ocean. In the evening, the vibe changes with DJs, bottle service, and a beautiful yet eclectic crowd! It’s a definite must. Another hot spot I recommend is Paradise Club. With past performances by Steve Aoki, Kaskade, and tons of other famous names, the lively Paradise Club is legendary. – Ellen, Blair & Janie, The Perennial Style
When it comes to starting the party early, Nammos is the one! After a late lunch, people start dancing to trendy, Ibiza DJ-kinda set music at around 4pm. This escalates (I couldn’t believe my eyes) to become a massive happy dance floor and dance table! It’s one of the happiest places I’ve been to party-wise, everyone’s smiling, dancing, sipping champagne and having the best time while looking oh so boho-stylish! Another of my favourite things about Mykonos is being able to go shopping at 1am! That’s right, you can wander the cute white and blue cobbled roads after dinner to find the most gorgeous bohemian fashion pieces I have ever seen! – Whitney, Whitney’s Wonderland
Party locations: Alemagou, Scorpios, Principote.
Drinks: Cocktails at Galleraki or Scarpa in Little Venice.
Mykonos is a place to party all year round but it gets really busy as from May until late September. – Sandy, S Marks The Spots
