Reviews of Small Group tours to South Italy
- Best of Sicily - 8 Days (Small Group Tour)
The good: Accommodations were all excellent, with fabulous sea views in Taormina and Ortegia. Tour guides were mostly excellent and both gracious and super-informed. The bad: Admissions to attractions were an extra expense. This was an unexpected nuisance. We should have been informed upfront that the large fee we paid for this tour did not include these fees. The vans transporting our group were not large enough to fit all tour guests comfortably. Another beef about transportation: when we were picked up from our hotel in Taormina for the next leg our our tour, we had to struggle navigating a steep driveway with more that 100 lbs of luggage while our driver waited at the bottom of the hill, chatting with other patrons who were not part of our tour group. Not exactly helpful.

What our customers ask about South Italy Small Group Tours
What is the ideal length for a small group tour in South Italy?
The sweet spot for South Italy small group tours falls between 7-10 days which balances seeing key destinations without feeling rushed. An 8-day tour might spend 2 nights at Hotel Vesuvio in Sorrento followed by stays in Positano and Amalfi. One TourRadar traveler shared: "The 8-day length was perfect - enough time to really experience each place while keeping the group energy positive throughout."
What is the ideal group size for exploring South Italy's cultural sites?
Small groups of 8-14 travelers work best for South Italy tours letting everyone easily explore places like Matera's ancient Sassi district and Alberobello's distinctive trulli houses. Some experiences are even more intimate like at Tenuta Linazza farmhouse in Puglia where groups max out at 4 people for activities such as cooking with Chef Emilio. One TourRadar traveler noted "Having just 4-5 people in our group made it possible to visit authentic local places and get personalized attention from our guide."
What are the accommodation options for small group tours in South Italy?
The accommodations focus on boutique hotels and historic properties across South Italy. Guests might stay in cave rooms at Le Dodici Lune in Matera or traditional masserias in Puglia. One TourRadar traveler noted: "Our group of 6 stayed at the family-run Tenuta Linazza farmhouse which felt more like being welcomed into someone's home than a hotel." Other options include Hotel Palazzo Salgar in Naples and Grand Hotel Vesuvio in Sorrento.
How does dining work on small group tours in South Italy?
Meals often take place at family restaurants and traditional masserias where small groups can easily fit. One TourRadar traveler shared: "Chef Emilio at Tenuta Linazza prepared incredible multi-course dinners using fresh local ingredients explaining each dish's history and significance." The small group size makes it easy to dine at authentic spots like local trattorias in Matera or family establishments in Alberobello.
What is the best time of year for small group tours in South Italy?
While tours run year-round the ideal months are spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) when weather is pleasant and tourist crowds thin out. A TourRadar traveler recommended: "Our September tour allowed us to visit popular sites like Alberobello and Matera without crowds plus enjoy perfect weather for outdoor activities." Properties like Grand Hotel Vesuvio in Sorrento are particularly nice during these shoulder seasons.
How does transportation work on small group tours in South Italy?
Transportation uses minivans or small buses with 8-16 seats instead of large coaches. This lets groups access narrow village streets and scenic routes along the Amalfi Coast or up to hilltop towns like Ravello and Positano. As one TourRadar traveler noted: "The private transfers were excellent making it easy to reach places that would be difficult with public transport."
What is the demographic mix typically found on small group tours in South Italy?
The tours attract mostly couples and solo travelers aged 35-65. Data from Sicily tours shows about 64% are couples 27% travel solo and the rest come as families or friends. As one TourRadar traveler shared: "Our group of 8 all got on so well which made the tour even more memorable." The small size helps everyone connect while maintaining personal space.
