The tour was very nice with amazing views and Andy was a great guide. It would have been nice if the hotel we stayed at offered something warm for breakfast as well instead of just plain sandwitches, cereal and sweets.

This was an excellent holiday. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and assessed the ability of our group well. We had excellent weather and we felt we had achieved quite a few challenging walks by the end of the week. The hotel was good and we had an upgrade. The set menu food was disappointing with a lot of heavy carbohydrates eg cheese dumplings, ravioli, etc. The three or four of us with a vegetarian diet struggled but they did try. Our group was very sociable and we had a fun week. Alex, our guide, gave a few options for the free day. He also was very informative on walking skills especially on the rough terrain.

Best tour companies for The Dolomites tours
If you're looking at winter options, Exodus stands out with their snowshoeing trips, particularly the one based at Hotel Adler. Our customers who've stayed there love coming back to the spa after a day in the snow, and the food gets lots of praise too. Both Explore and Exodus guides earn high marks from our travelers for knowing the trails inside out and adapting the pace to suit different hiking abilities. Intrepid Travel puts together solid itineraries at good prices, though some of our travelers have mentioned they'd like more actual hiking time built into their Dolomites program. That said, their small group approach works well for getting to know fellow travelers and moving efficiently between locations. The guides from all three companies really understand the region's geology, flora and local culture - they're quick to point out things you might miss on your own, from rare Alpine flowers to the best spots for traditional mountain cuisine and regional wines.

- Spring 2026
As snow melts and flowers start popping up, spring opens possibilities for cycling and early hiking. The bike path from Merano to Lake Garda follows old wine roads past orchards in bloom and authentic South Tyrolean villages. Our cyclists especially like riding through Val Pusteria - it's mostly downhill and you get amazing views of snow-topped peaks perfect for photos. If walking's more your style, the trails around Dobbiaco become accessible bit by bit as spring moves along, starting with lower routes like the Lake Braies loop and valleys dotted with Alpine blooms.
- May 2026 popular 15 tours
- Summer 2026
Summer means full access to high trails and our most diverse hiking options. From Dobbiaco, you can tackle different terrain each day - maybe climbing through meadows to reach Putzalm hut, then walking the ridge between Italy and Austria on Mount Elmo the next. Our guides are great at adjusting daily routes based on weather and how the group's feeling. If you prefer going solo, self-guided trips come with detailed route notes so you can move at your own speed. Multi-day tours include rest days for cycling, checking out Bolzano's archaeological museum or exploring WWI trenches and bunkers on Monte Piano.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall brings fewer crowds, golden larches and tours that mix hiking with local culture. The Classic Dolomites routes from Villabassa offer solid value - you'll walk through colorful forests and visit traditional mountain huts. Our guides pick the perfect time to do the Tre Cime di Lavaredo circuit for the best light on those limestone peaks. Weather can change quickly, but that's what makes autumn interesting - you might start in sunshine and end up watching clouds dance around the mountains. You'll also dig into regional food, trying local wines and traditional Tyrolean cooking. Travelers consistently tell us good things about Explore's guided walks through the Dolomites - just keep in mind you'll need decent fitness to fully enjoy the routes and daily distances. Their guides have this knack for sharing local knowledge that really adds depth to the walking experience.

What Makes The Dolomites So Special?
You've got to see these mountains to believe them - eighteen peaks shooting up past 3000m with dramatic walls and valleys carved from ancient limestone. It's pretty amazing to think you're walking through what used to be coral reefs millions of years ago. When UNESCO made this a World Heritage Site in 2009 they really got it right the landscape tells an incredible story of Earth's history.
What's The Local Culture Like?
The cool thing about the Dolomites is you'll hear three languages - Italian German and this fascinating ancient language called Ladin. If you're exploring Val Badia or Val Gardena you can really dive into local life with traditional music amazing food and beautiful crafts. The mountain huts or refugios as they call them are fantastic places to experience real alpine hospitality. You've got to try the local cheese especially at places like the Dobbiaco cooperative that's been making it since 1882 - our Day 3 cheese tasting on the Hiking tour is always a highlight.
Can I Get Around Without Driving?
Getting around is actually pretty straightforward the bus network connects all the major spots and hiking trails really well. The cable cars are brilliant for reaching those high-altitude views like Strudelkopf without wearing yourself out climbing. If you're into cycling there are some fantastic dedicated paths including this gorgeous route through South Tyrol's vineyards that's part of our 10-day Cycling Plus! Sella Ronda tour.
When Should I Plan My Hiking Trip?
Summer's your best bet from June through September when the trails are clear and temperatures are just right. The alpine meadows burst with wildflowers it's absolutely beautiful. Just remember mountain weather can change quickly so pack smart with layers. Our guide Matilda knows this well - she once had heavy snow during a summer tour while leading the 4 Days Dolomites trip from Milan.
What Are Some Hidden Gems Beyond Tre Cime?
While Tre Cime is stunning and definitely worth seeing there's so much more to explore. Strudelkopf's summit gives you these incredible panoramic views and on clear days you can even spot Tre Cime in the distance - it's a highlight of Day 2 on our hiking tour. The Marmolada is actually the highest peak in the whole range and Monte Elmo offers these amazing views stretching all the way to Austria. You can experience Monte Elmo yourself on Day 7 of our hiking tour taking the cable car up for some truly spectacular views.
