Hiking & Trekking Tours & Trips in Mongolia
Hiking and trekking are already amazing, but Mongolia elevates the experience. Imagine camping beneath a sprawling, star-filled sky in the Altai Mountains, trekking alongside camels, and exploring stunning scenery. Consider a journey to Malchin Peak, where the vistas are truly remarkable, and you can witness the Tuvan people's nomadic lifestyle. You'll encounter eagle hunters and have the chance to ride horses through the Altai canyons.

The process until reaching the moment we arrived in Mongolia was long. It felt strange to pay it all in advance without having any assurances that this was not a scam. Also it was strange to pay it all so long in advance. It would have sufficed to ensure a deposit on a credit card and pay another 30% just before departure and the final 30% upon meeting the staff. The credit card would have guaranteed everyone a surety. This is the main reason, I will not use Tourradar again. We should have asked for a detailed programme and a detailed list of the amenities at each stay. We should have asked for approximate timings of each day. Now, all this is minor and could be resolved but we were taken aback by the lack of (bearable) WC and shower, still we saw it as an adventure. Others that would have booked this tour could have been shocked. We were pleasantly surprised by the ingenuity and plasticity of the involved people when our initial car was unusable, the swiftness they fixed a replacement and the ease they organized a new car the day after. Our tour was not at all impacted. This is a strength! The rest was impeccable. I would book the same mongolian guys again but not through tourradar. the payment issue has really put me off.

This tour was absolutely amazing. We were a small group where people only knew 1 or 2 of the group but Migo, our tour guide, promoted cohesion with his professional social skills of assessing everyone's needs and interests allowing us to get maximum enjoyment from our tour. I was nursing an injury to my knee but at no time did I feel excluded from activities. Migo, along with our drivers, provided assistance if I felt challenged with climbing or balance. I am forever grateful for their assistance. Migo's knowledge of cultural, historical and geographical features was extensive. He is truly a gifted tour guide. Our drivers were excellent and very professional providing guidance and ingenuity to help us solve any concerns we had- even fixing broken sunglasses. The driver's supported one another and were very caring. I feel very honoured to have had this experienced team to guide, support and encourage me during the tour.

What our customers ask about Hiking & Trekking Tours & Trips in Mongolia
What is the best time of year for hiking in Mongolia?
Mongolia's hiking season peaks from June through September when conditions are most reliable. Temperatures in the Altai Mountains hover between 15-25°C during July and August making these months ideal for trekking. The Khuvsgul Lake region sees its best conditions in June and July coinciding with wildflower season. Weather becomes less predictable in May and October. One TourRadar traveler mentioned "The summer months provided clear crisp air and towering mountain peaks adding to the grandeur of the landscape."
Where do I sleep during multi-day hikes in Mongolia?
Multi-day hikes blend tent camping with stays in traditional gers. Groups exploring Altai Tavan Bogd National Park rest in fully equipped campsites while the Bayangol Hotel in Ulaanbaatar serves as a starting point. Near Khoton Lake travelers can experience life with nomadic families in their ger camps. A TourRadar traveler shared "The combination of camping under stars and staying with local nomads made for an unforgettable experience."
What level of fitness is required for hiking in Mongolia?
Mongolian treks demand solid fitness with daily walks lasting 5-8 hours across diverse landscapes. The Turgen Mountain route covers 15-16km daily with steady climbs while Malchin Peak includes steep sections reaching 4050m. Khangai Mountains tours average 6-7 hours of walking with elevation changes between 400-700m. According to a TourRadar review "The trek was physically demanding but well-paced and the guides were quick to adapt to different fitness levels in the group."
What should I pack for a hiking trip in Mongolia?
Pack robust hiking boots along with clothes that layer for temperatures from -5°C to 25°C. You'll need a waterproof jacket sleeping bag rated to -5°C and a day pack. For stays at places like the Three Camel Lodge regular clothes work fine. Mountain treks benefit from equipment like trekking poles. As one TourRadar traveler advised "The mountain weather is very changeable - you can witness all four seasons in a day so bring warm clothes and waterproof jackets."
What wildlife might I encounter while hiking in Mongolia?
The varied landscapes offer chances to see snow leopards in the Khairkhan Mountains Altai argali sheep around Tavan Bogd National Park and golden eagles in western regions. The Khangai Mountains host ibex wolves and marmots. One TourRadar traveler shared "We spotted numerous birds of prey and even caught glimpses of wild sheep in their natural habitat."
What cultural experiences can I expect while hiking in Mongolia?
Trekking routes weave through areas rich in local culture offering stays in ger camps and meetings with nomadic families. The Altai region introduces travelers to Kazakh eagle hunters while the Khangai Mountains are home to Tuvan communities known for throat singing. One TourRadar traveler noted "The local nomads were incredibly friendly and helpful often inviting us for traditional meals and sharing their customs."
