A bit clumsy in booking details as Exodus did not want us to contact them directly, so all matters had to go through Tour Radar. The trip itself went well - a very attentive tour guide 'Alex' made it even better.

I had a stressful start as I was given the wrong flight time to meet up with the group for the transfer to our start city of Matera. After hanging around the airport to catch a shuttle, my tour guide turned up at the correct time to meet the rest of the group. After that the cycle tour was amazing. Well organised, great accommodation, fabulous guide & support staff. I iopted for an ebike which I am glad of as there was some mean hills but great views. The countryside is spectacular. I highly recommend this tour.

Chain Gang focus on small group cycling holidays that take in stunning scenery (photo op delight!) and great local food and wine. Knowledgeable guides take you off the beaten track to some delightful towns and villages where you can sample great food or patter around to your hearts content. The accommodation along the way is beautiful, and not the sort of thing you could easily find yourself. Luggage is all taken care of and you just need to cycle to your nights accommodation. Bikes, helmets, jackets etc... are all supplied - just bring yourself. All in all, some of the best cycle tours we've done are with this group - no wonder so many people keep coming back. Highly recommended!

What our customers ask about Cycling Tours & Bike Trips in Italy
What are the most scenic cycling routes in Italy?
The Italian countryside unfolds along several notable cycling routes connecting major cities and small villages. The path through Tuscany weaves between Florence and Pisa with stops in historic towns like Vinci and Barga where cyclists ride past cypress trees and vineyards. In northern Italy the route from Lake Reschen to Verona cuts through the Alps and Adige Valley with overnight stays at local hotels like Villa Claudia Augusta in Reschen. As one TourRadar traveler notes "The coastal scenery and wow moment at every bend made this trip unforgettable."
What type of accommodation can I expect on Italian cycling tours?
Most cycling itineraries include stays at quality 3- and 4-star properties chosen for their character and location. In Florence cyclists often stay at Hotel De La Pace in the city center while Montecatini Terme offers the Grand Hotel Croce di Malta with its rejuvenating thermal pools. The properties provide secure bike storage and easy access to dining and attractions. One TourRadar traveler noted: "The hotels were perfectly chosen especially the charming Hotel Centrale Byron in Ravenna with its beautiful courtyard and excellent location near the Byzantine mosaics."
What cultural highlights can I expect to see on Italian cycling tours?
The routes connect both famous landmarks and off-the-beaten-path discoveries. The Florence to Rome journey passes through the UNESCO site of Assisi and the medieval town of Spoleto. Cyclists on the Venetian Highlights route explore St. Mark's Square but also discover local treasures like the Poli Grappa Museum in Bassano del Grappa. According to one TourRadar traveler: "Cycling allowed us to experience both famous landmarks and authentic local life - from the magnificent Duomo in Florence to tiny village bakeries serving fresh focaccia."
What kind of support is provided on self-guided bicycle tours in Italy?
Self-guided tours balance independence with practical assistance. Basic services include route maps GPS navigation 24/7 emergency support and luggage transfers. Tours in Tuscany start with orientation sessions in English or German and provide a navigation app. Bike maintenance help is available in larger towns. One TourRadar traveler shared: "The support was excellent - our bags always arrived before us the route materials were very clear and when we had a minor bike issue it was resolved within hours."
What's included in Italian bicycle tour packages regarding meals?
Tour packages typically cover daily breakfast and selected dinners at local establishments. The Sicilian routes include 7 breakfasts and 6 dinners with regional wines while Prosecco tours feature daily breakfast and wine sampling. In Tuscany travelers often taste local olive oil and pecorino cheese. A TourRadar traveler reported: "The included meals at Villa Itria were outstanding featuring fresh local ingredients and regional specialties paired with excellent local wines."
What is the best time of year for cycling in Italy?
The ideal cycling months span April to October with spring and fall providing pleasant weather and smaller crowds. May and September are popular for Tuscany when temperatures stay between 20-25°C (68-77°F). The Puglia coastal routes work well even in March or November. July and August bring higher temperatures especially in southern regions. One TourRadar traveler observed: "Early May was perfect - comfortable temperatures for cycling beautiful wildflowers blooming and we largely avoided the summer crowds at popular stops like San Gimignano."
