We waited for two years to enjoy this cruise! And yes...it was risky...even though vaccinated and boostered plenty of people got mild cases of Covid. We were coached on taking mask precautions...and for the most part we masked in the excursion buses and at buffet lines. But you get friendly with other diners and spend time with them in social settings not always masked. I thought Mihai/Mike was very attentive to people's health and safety. And was a FANTASTIC Cruise Director...the ship was always cleaned and inviting. The food was excellent and plentiful..as was the beverages! The excursions were without a doubt the best way to really see/get to know these countries...and conveniently! The Balkans have individual border rules, money and language! I cannot image doing it without enjoying the trip through cruising! Avalon...I will definitely cruise with you again!!!
The Danube from Romania to Budapest with 1 Night in Bucharest, 2 Nights in Transylvania & 1 Night in Budapest 2026 - D

First river cruise we have taken as we are normally ocean cruisers. Pros: Food and service was better. Everything was within 50 feet away which made accessibility more convenient. The small setting made it more intimate. A completely different vibe which we loved. Cons: Room and bathroom were smaller even though we had a suite. When ever you flushed, it sounded like the toilet would explode. Bathroom was inconvenient to get to. No elevator between 3rd and 4th floors. You can clearly hear people walking and running upstairs. Other boats can block your view. Ramps are much, much steeper at times. There were technical issues which were ironed out. This was expected given this was the inaugural cruise of the Emerald Astra. Overall: Enjoyed the journey, food, service, people, and guided excursions from guides who lived in the various countries we visited.
